Final Project I

Due: Wednesday, 9:00 am, April 17th, 2019 – on OWL as one PDF file + ETABS file

The Architectural drawings of an industrial/residential steel building are shown in the attached
AutoCAD file. The basement, ground, typical floors, and roof plans and the four elevations and
sections are provided in the AutoCAD file. Please see attached Table 1 for each student’s project
location, seismic soil type, and Roof height. The building has one underground
basement/parking. The lateral load structural system for the attached building must consist of
steel braced frames, steel rigid frames, and concrete shearwalls only. The structure shall be
designed to resist the following loads:

Loading

Roof Loading

- Snow Load = 1.92 KPa

- Mechanical load = 3.60 kPa

- Superimposed Dead Load = 1.50 kPa

Floor Loading

- Live Load = 4.80 KPa

- Superimposed Dead Load = 1.50 kPa

Lateral Loads

- Wind Loads are based on the 2015 NBCC provisions and the project location

- Seismic Loads are based on the 2015 NBCC provisions and the project location

Load Combinations

- Load combinations are based on the 2015 NBCC

Materials

Concrete strength fc’ = 30 MPa.

Reinforcement fy = 400 MPa

Steel Structures fy = 350 MPa

Required:

1) Provide a gravity and lateral load structural system for the attached industrial/residential
steel building – Use steel braced frames, steel rigid frames, and concrete shearwalls only.

2) Provide a three-dimensional ETABS Model for the building. The ETABS model must be
submitted on OWL. ETABS file must named as “Last name”.edb

3) Provide three-dimensional, plans, elevations, deflected shape, and inter-storey drift

views of the ETABS Model.

4) Provide a summary of both the seismic and wind base shears in all possible directions
with neat sketches (Maximum 2 pages).

5) Provide the

a. Building’s average net uplift wind loads

b. Building’s average cladding wind loads

c. Building Wind Base shear

d. Building Seismic Base shear

6) Determine the Top deflection of the building in N-S and E-W directions under seismic and
wind loads.

7) Determine the maximum inter-storey drift under wind and seismic of the building in N-S
and E-W directions.

8) Compare the lateral deflections to the NBCC requirements. Comment on the results, and
provide solutions (if applicable)

9) Design the building’s interior and exterior columns. Use one typical section for all interior
columns, and one typical section for all exterior columns – Design for the maximum case

10) Design the building interior and exterior beams. Use one typical section for all interior
beams, and one typical section for all exterior beams – Design for the maximum case

11) Design the crane girder and provide

a. Full explanation of the crane’s loads path to foundation

b. Full deflection details

c. Full drawings (sketches)

12) Design all bracing members and their connections.

13) Provide full drawings, similar to S2.1 and S3.0 of the provided Example Building, for the
designed industrial steel building

Project I breakdown
Final Project Portfolio:
o Cover Letter 05%
o Design Brief 10%
o Calculations 25%
o Drawings 20%
o Oral discussion & Defence of design 40%

Final Submission:

Final Project Portfolio

• Cover letter and Design Brief
The length of the final design brief shall not exceed 10 typed pages (including cover letter,
table of contents, all tables and figures, etc., font size 12, double spaced). Suggested
contents are: Cover Letter, Executive Summary; Introduction, Design Criteria, particulars
of design/analysis, and Recommendations (or Conclusions). The Design Criteria would
include the design standards and technical references used; the particular design criteria
adopted also must be indicated succinctly. The particulars of design/analysis would
summarize the rationale behind the various design decisions. The evaluation of the final
design brief shall be based on the format, layout, completeness, technical content and
use of English.
• Calculations
Calculations must be well organized, clear, complete, and done on calculation paper. Each
calculation page shall be dated, and shall indicate the name or initials of the person who
performed the calculations. A final calculation set, which must be current, checked and
indexed, shall be submitted with the final design brief. The evaluation of calculations will
be based on their clarity, completeness, technical content, originality, and accuracy. Some
marks are allocated for the clarity and neatness of the calculations provided.
• Drawings
Student is required to prepare a set of drawings in AutoCAD and print them as pdf, and
attach to the final submitted report. Each drawing shall be dated, and shall indicate the
name or initials of the person who did the drawing. The evaluation of drawings will be
based on their technical content, clarity, completeness, and quality of drafting.
• ETABS Model
The final ETABS model (“last name”.EDB) is required to be submitted on OWL with the
final project portfolio.
