CAMPUS LIFE
Study Space
Best: Architecture West
If you are looking for a study space that is nice and quiet
with roomy tables, good lighting, and access to a con-
veniently-placed pastry and coffee bar — look no fur-
ther than the first floor of the architecture west build-
ing. There are plenty of tables in the lobby, but if you’re
looking for a more secluded spot, there’s even a library
right off the main entrance to get a more quiet environ-
ment. The architecture building is centrally located, so
is a good place to spend those hour-long breaks between
classes, or to quickly walk to right after class. And if you
need a pick-me-up during your studying, there’s a micro
Highland Bakery bar right outside of the Architecture
Library to grab a pastry or a coffee. With it’s tall ceil-
ings, student projects and almost-brutalist design it’s also
arguably one of the most interesting buildings on Tech’s
campus in terms of architecture. Not to mention there
are a plethora of outlets can be found near almost ev-
ery study space. This spot checks pretty much all of the
boxes.

Worst: Clough
This may be an unpopular opinion, but the Clough Un-
dergraduate Learning Commons is definitely the worst
place to study. Sure, there are lots of seats and its primary
purpose is to serve as a study building, but it actually fails
at providing a good environment for studying. It is pretty
much a guarantee that you will spend more time walk-
ing around the Clough trying to find a table or space to
study than actually doing any kind of work. Aside from
the Starbucks (which also sadly is a time-suck, since those
lines take forever) and the occasional class, there is not
much appeal to the Clough building. However, if you are
one of the lucky ones who can snag a Clough booth, you
might have a different opinion; those things rock.

Athlete
Best Male Athlete: James Banks III
It is difficult to find a player who made more of an impact
on their team this season at Tech than James Banks III.
Banks joined Tech as a transfer from Texas and immedi-
ately made a name for himself as one of the nation’s best
shot-blockers, following in the footsteps of Tech big Ben
Lammers. Banks averaged 10.5 points, 7.8 rebounds,
and 2.5 rebounds per game, leading the Jackets on both
ends of the court. Banks was regularly a double-double
threat who can dunk with the best of them — see his
poster on Zion Williamson as exhibit A. Banks served
as both an efficient scorer on a team where every posses-
sion mattered and a brilliant defender on a team based
around defense — and Tech was simply a different team
with him on the court.

Best Female Athlete: Elizabeth Balogun

Freshmen sometimes have a difficult time acclimating
to the rigors of college basketball, even McDonald’s All-
Americans. Not so for Balogun, who led the team with an
impressive 14.6 points per game and often played with a
savvy that belied her inexperience. She posted a pair of
double-doubles, was the eighth-ranked freshman nation-
ally in terms of scoring and twice put up 30-plus points.
This was a season of real turmoil for the women’s bas-
ketball team. But if new coach Nell Fortner is looking to
ease the transition, she would be wise to give the ball to
Balogun early and often. She has the potential to be a
true superstar in Atlanta.

Performance
Best Performance: Tech baseball
Tech baseball has been buoyed by its starting pitching
this year, and LHP Connor Thomas is no exception. The
southpaw was stunning against a top-25 Louisville Car-
dinals squad on March 23, 2019, weaving a complete-
game shutout in under 100 pitches. Thomas’s CGSO was
the first since teammate Xzavion Curry shut out Wake
Forest a year prior, and only the second since 2013. For
his performance, Thomas was named ACC pitcher of the
