OPSBA – VI Unit Project

1. Purpose of Document
This document presents the assessment pressure drop calculations for two groups of piping.
This document used for assessing the pressure demand for pumping and the required diameter
for the pipes

Project Description

Total and OiLibya inaugurated their new industrial facility in Borg El Arab, near Alexandria in
October 2009. Oil Products Storage and Blending Alexandria (OPSBA), an industrial joint
venture in which the two Companies hold 65% and 35% respectively, are operating the Plant.
The purpose of the Company is manufacturing, purchasing, exporting, trading, marketing and
distributing petroleum products, motor oils, lubricants and specialties in addition to any related
services.
OPSBA intends to install Viscosity Improver Modifier Dissolution Unit (VIMU) in the plant to
achieve strategic goals and objectives. The VI Modifier shall enable OPSBA to blend the
viscosity index improver additives in-house, which will help in reducing the finished product
blending time, enhance the material planning process, and save the space dedicated to store
the packed V.I additives and increase the space for storing other types of packed additives. The
project will also help reducing the risk of handling full packed drums and will reduce the traffic
inside the blending plant.
The project outline is the installation of Viscosity Improver Modifier Blender with Capacity of
10mT along with 2 x 50 M³ Additive Tanks with Related Accessories and integrating them to the
existing Blending system.
On other hand, OPSBA intends to make extra scope for some pipelines modification in the sake
of plant improvement.

6. CONCLUSION
Based on the pressure drop calculations, the pressure drop is very high at 4-inch diameter so that it
is not acceptable. For the 6-inch, it is also not recommended as the pressure drop value is still high
and will need higher pumping power to flow.
