was a huge cheer at the United Conservative Party
(UCP) campaign celebration at the Strathmore Le-
gion on April 16.
Leela Sharon Aheer was elected as the MLA for
the new riding of Chestermere-Strathmore, taking
67.4 per cent of the unofficial votes.
The unofficial results (80 of the 82 polls), as of
April 17, had Aheer and the UCP’s collecting 13,808
votes followed by Melissa Langmaid (NDP) in a dis-
tant second with 3,352 votes and former Strathmore-
Brooks MLA Derek Fildebrandt (FCP) with 1,587. Ja-
son Avramenko (Alberta Party) collected 1,294 votes,
followed by Sharon Howe (Liberal) with 211, Roger
Walker (Alberta Independence Party) with 126 and
Terry Nicholls (Independent) with 104 votes.
The former Strathmore-Brooks constituency broke
Wheatland County into four new ridings, including
the aforementioned Chestermere-Strathmore. The
other three ridings in the county include Card-
ston-Siksika, Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills and a small
portion of Airdire-East. The results were the same in
those ridings, with UCP dominating.
Joseph Schow (UCP) claimed 11,321 votes, or 73.6
per cent of the unofficial results in Cardston-Siksi-
ka. Kirby Smith (NDP) had 2,454 votes, while Ian
Donovan (Independent) claimed 702 votes. Casey
Douglas (Alberta Party) 555, Jerry Gautreau (FCP)
191 and Cathleen McFarland (Liberal) 166 rounded
out the voting.
Nathan Cooper (UCP) dominated, collecting
19,104 votes, or 78.8 per cent of the unofficial re-
sults in Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills. The remaining
candidates went as follows; Kyle Johnson (NDP)
2,824 votes, Chase Brown (Alberta Party) 1,630
votes, Allen MacLennan (FCP) 519 votes and Dave
Hughes (AAP) 179.
Angela Pitt (UCP) claimed 13,947 votes, or 67.3
per cent of the unofficial results in Airdrie-East. The
remaining candidates went as follows; Roxie Baez
Zamora (NDP) 4,137 votes, Alex Luterbach (Alberta

Stone, recapped for Wheatland County
council the success of the 2018 Christ-
mas hamper program.
He stated there were 245 food ham-
pers sent out. The value of food given
out was about $106,000.
There were 272 bags of toys given
out, 149 for boys and 133 for girls. In
2018, toy donations were down about
five per cent. The bags include clothes
and hygiene products and cost about
$140 a bag.
“This seems to be a pretty even stan-
dard for the campaign and will be the
target for 2019 as well,” said Stone.
He commented on the growing trend
of single person households. He said
there were 54 this year. The society
made a decision to alter its hamper
family-size categories so single person
households could be included.
“It is going to allow us to have a
more fair and even distribution of the
products to those groups,” said Stone.
He said the shuffle wouldn’t impact
the overall amount of food or money
needed to meet their goals.
He said the types of donations vary
from year to year. The society has also
decided to change some of the food
items and are including ground beef
and condiments in the baskets.
He expressed the society’s thanks to

on April 12.

by about $18,000.
The food donations were down
about 20 per cent for 2018. The cash
donations were down about $18,000,
but toy donations were up by 30 per
cent.
The society moved into the 21st
century this year, with the hiring of a
communications coordinator, and they
established a website, christmasham-
persociety.com.
“We were very happy about the end
result and how much the website was
used and tagged for us,” said Stone.
“We see this as being a great tool for us
to use in the future, because it is going
to allow us easier access to donations,
and for people who want to come and
spend time, there is all the information
on the website how to volunteer.”
They also utilized radio advertis-
ing this year. They are now using e-
transfers with their banking exchanges
and a secured credit card to track pur-
chases. The board is going through an
update to job descriptions which will
allow smoother transitions for staff
changes or illnesses.
They are coordinating with Wheat-
land County food bank storage, allow-
ing them to use any overages.
“It allows us to take all the stored
food throughout the year and we start
with fresh goods each year,” said Stone.
They also worked on building a bet-

approached the mayor, but no informa-

“We always seem to be in a pay-it-
forward situation,” said Stone. “You

Fix your own city
To the Editor
Mayor Nenshi stated all Albertans are to fix Cal-
gary’s economy. It is the Mayor of Calgary’s job to fix
Calgary’s economy, not every person in Alberta.
If Mayor Nenshi lead by example, take a 20 per
cent pay cut per year. Have city councilors take a 15
per cent pay cut. Stop wasting Calgarian’s hard-earned
money on so-called Calgary Public Artwork along
What a performance
To the Editor
I attended the Strathmore High School Dance 25
& 35 classes performance of The Wall (a Show About
Addiction) on April 9. This performance was based
upon the experiences of a former student. The per-
formance was a sad but poignant look at the trials
of youth substance use and the effects it can have
on friends and family. From the beginning until the
end, the players represented the journey and resulting
decline to the skirting of death of the main character
with an emotional but genuine performance that did
justice to the topic.
The dark music, and the poem recited (the only
dialogue of the performance), and the choreography
all blended to communicate the pain experienced not
only by the young man, but by his family and friends,
and of his descent into addiction and the inevitable
experiences with overdose. They realistically commu-
nicated the chaos and mind-altering nature of drug in-

This past week, Jane Philpott and Jody Wilson-
Raybould were removed from Liberal caucus. This
is yet another escalation in the SNC Lavalin scan-
dal that has engulfed the Trudeau Government in
recent weeks.
Both Wilson-Raybould and Philpott have been
clear: they believe that if the Prime Minister had
accepted responsibility and apologized, this situa-
tion would not have spiraled out-of-control in the
way it did. Instead, the Prime Minister denied in-
volvement and spent weeks trying to coverup his
actions. He shutdown investigations into the scan-
dal and refused to fully waive solicitor-client and
cabinet privilege so that Wilson-Raybould could
reveal the truth.
By enabling the coverup and ultimately sup-
porting Wilson-Raybould and Philpott’s removal
from caucus, Liberal Members of Parliament have
shown where they stand. They claim to be upset
about Wilson-Raybould taping a damning conver-
sation with former PCO Clerk Micheal Wernick.
Shields questions Heritage Minister

During the April 9 meeting of the Standing Com-
mittee on Canadian Heritage, MP Martin Shields
demanded answers from Pablo Rodriguez, Minis-
ter of Canadian Heritage, on the Liberal govern-
ment’s proposed media bailout.
The 2019 budget features a “Supporting Cana-
dian Journalism” initiative, which includes $600
million in funding but outlines criteria that many
smaller Canadian newspapers will be unable to
qualify under.

real grasp of the real impact of trauma on the psyche
of youth.
These young dancers can be proud of their perfor-
mance and in their contribution to raising awareness
in our community of the very real dangers of sub-
stance use. Well done, everyone, well done!

are upset about how the truth came out, not what
the truth is.
Elected officials are supposed to protect indi-
viduals who blow the whistle on government mis-
conduct and corruption, not punish them. We now
know that the Liberal Party of Canada will kick
people out for simply telling the truth.
The Prime Minister promised “sunny ways” and
transparent government. The SNC Lavalin affair is
just the latest and most dramatic proof that he has
delivered neither.
If you voted for Justin Trudeau because you be-
lieved that he would do things differently, if you
believe that speaking truth to power should be
rewarded, not punished, there is a place for you in
the Conservative Party of Canada. The 2019 elec-
tion is right around the corner.

Room 203 – that’s where the magic
happens. Who would have thought one
small room could hold so much creativ-
ity and innovation?
Mr. Ed Eberts, the coolest nerd at
Strathmore High School (SHS), offers
courses in computer repair/network-
ing, game programming, industrial de-
sign, animation, 3D printing, web de-
sign and robotics. One teacher plus one
room plus 27 computers plus a variety
of equipment equals an electronic won-
derland.
Thanks to Eberts, many new classes
have been created, allowing students
even more variety in option classes
and allowing students to graduate high
school with skills that are relevant in to-
day’s workforce. Students who finish the
computer repair or networking path to
the 30 level are able to take a test which
will certify them for working in differ-
ent IT and networking environments.
Normally students would need to take
a course at an institution such as SAIT
in order to attempt this type of certifica-
tion.
In robotics class, students learn basic
coding to begin controlling each of their
robots, and as they advance through the
courses, will begin creating their own
robots that can function in a variety of
ways. Eberts’ current project in this class
is building a robot that moves along a
wire, hoping to eventually make a room-
scale ClawBot. He is also working on a
light-painting wand that uses LEDs to
paint pictures in the air.
Eberts isn’t one to sit still. When asked
if money wasn’t an issue, what would
his courses look like, he replied, “prob-
ably bigger and more robots. I’ve also
been thinking about drones and drone-
racing and how to bring that to SHS. Oh,
and more VR (virtual reality). We have
one VR station and some students are
getting into coding on it. We made a VR
game last year that included 3D scanned
students as the enemies. That was a fun
project.”
Eberts is always smiling and it’s easy to
tell he loves his job. When asked about
it, he stated, “Well, I do have the best
toys. Computers, 3D printers and robots
are a lot of fun. I love that it is both tech-

Strathmore Kindness Rocks refers to
the brightly painted rocks one can find
strategically placed around town, as well
as a reminder that even the smallest acts
of kindness can make a large difference.
Beth-Anna Van Delllan stumbled
across the idea when her family was
camping last summer at Mount Kidd in
Kananaskis and her children found some
painted rocks left by the group, Canmore
Kindness Rocks. They thought it was a
great idea, brought it back with them to
Strathmore and began collecting, paint-
ing and placing rocks around town as a
way to brighten the day for others.
“It’s not an earth-shattering endeavor,
but it’s fun for kids to be able to make a
difference in a small way,” said Van Del-
lan.
She started the Facebook page Strath-
more Kindness Rocks last July, inviting
others to paint rocks, posting where they
left them or where they found them.
The idea took off, with individual
families taking on the project, as well as
it becoming part of events such as the
PopUp PlayDate and the Teddy Bear

nical and creative at the same time. Also,
I have to say that the kids out here in
Strathmore are great to work with. The
staff too. It’s a fantastic school.”
Other interesting classes are web de-
sign in which students learn to create
web pages and understand web lan-
guages and game programming. In ani-
mation class, students will start off learn-
ing the basics and a large amount of
respect for the first animators who had
to draw every frame. As the course goes
on, however, they learn more advanced
techniques and will have opportunities
to create their own animated clips.
Despite originally being a math major
in university, thanks to some engineer-
ing courses he took, Eberts did many
of the things he now teaches as hob-
bies. He came to Strathmore after work-
ing as a math and physics teacher at a
junior high school in Calgary. Between
his personal projects and teaching and
helping run the new eSports team, he is
very busy and yet manages to still create
an interesting and fun classroom experi-
ence.
Although it is not as well known, Eb-
erts also has a passion for automobiles
and motorcycles, perhaps to offset his
nerdy vibe.
“I think that students today spend so
much time with technology that they like
to learn both how it works and gaining
new skills they can use,” he said. “Kids
like my courses because every class has
projects that are tangible and achiev-
able, and in my experience that keeps
students interested and motivated.”
Thanks to his variety of classes and
interesting personal projects, his class-
room has become the hub of activity
and a place where students love to be.

“With people divided on so much
these days, painting rocks with kids is
simple but it can bring people together,”
said Van Dellan.
One young Strathmore girl latched
onto the idea in a big way. Braelyn
Carlson saw the rocks while downtown
with her mom Amber and was so taken
with the rocks, some with faith- based
messages, that she gathered up 80 or
so and took them to her kindergarten
classmates at Trinity Christian Academy,
where the kids are sharing them back
and forth with each other.
“They were excited to get the rocks
and they felt happy,” said Carlson, “be-
cause they got God’s word.”
Asked why she gave her classmates
the rocks Carlson said, “because it’s nice
to do that, and nice to God. It’s good for
the heart.”
Giving or receiving such acts of kind-
ness, no matter how seemingly small can
be good for the heart. For more informa-

Wheatland County council had more
discussion about cannabis production,
when staff brought a few changes to
bylaw 2018-28 on April 2.
All types of cannabis production and
use were finalized by the federal gov-
ernment on Oct. 2, 2018 and county
staff updated the bylaw to coincide
with federal legislative conditions that
were released at that time.
Previously, the bylaw only dealt with
medical cannabis, so it was amended to
reference recreational cannabis as well,
under one heading and definitions.
Staff proposed it be moved to an Indus-
trial General from Intensive Industrial
General designation.
They included types of cannabis pro-
duction facilities licensing, which cov-
ers cultivation, processing, nursery,
analysis, testing, research and micro-
cultivation along with medical cannabis
production.
The bylaw amendments include sug-
gestions about setbacks, environmental
and odour concerns, site descriptions
and location, water servicing, waste
management, lighting and housing, and
handling of the product.
There are different security require-
ments for standard cannabis cultivation
and processing.
Staff said there was interest from ap-
plicants about micro-cultivation and
micro-processing.
In micro-cultivation, cannabis is al-
lowed to be grown in a warehouse or
greenhouse environment, or outdoor
farming area under 2,152 square feet
in size.
“Micro-cultivation, micro-processing,
nursery, analytical or research license
holders are not required to record the
identity of every individual entering or
exiting a storage area, nor are they re-
quired to install monitoring or record-
ing devices or an intrusion detection
system,” said Megan Williams, interme-
diate planner with Wheatland County
in her report to council.

greenhouse crops and microbrewery
businesses. He thought it might be bet-
ter controlled by where and how the
product is sold.
Other councillors felt regulations
were covered under federal legislation,
so they were not sure there was a need
to cover those in the bylaw.
“It is federal regulation, but we can’t
trump federal regulation …but maybe
we can add to it. Basically that says if
the feds agree to it, it’s OK. Why is it
in our bylaw?” said Deputy Reeve Glen
Koester.

grant approval of the development per-
mits, so a detailed bylaw makes that job
easier.
“Like Tom says it is a legal crop to
grow. We have a designated facil-
ity, where this is only allowed in the
West Highway 1 District. Should we
think about making it permitted? That
is the only place in the county that is
allowed,” said Councillor Jason Wilson.
He asked if small production facilities
would be treated differently than large
facilities.
Council thought perhaps they would
need to look at the water usage of the
facilities to be sure it met the needs of
all residents in the county.
The Town of Strathmore submitted
some questions about the structure of
the bylaw. They wanted to coordinate
with the county, especially on discre-
tionary and permitted designations,
security and beautification issues. Staff
replied they had to comply with federal
licensing rules and could not refuse ap-
plicants if they met those conditions.
The Strathmore RCMP asked if they
would be notified of new cannabis
businesses starting up and staff replied
they currently did not notify them.
Council approved second and third
reading of the bylaw submitted on
April 2.

The idea of using duct tape to get rid of warts

are a few clues to spot hucksters: the “discoverer”
pitches claims directly to the media; the evidence
is anecdotal sometimes with testimonials by paid
“users”; the health item is credible because it has
been around for centuries; the discoverer says
powerful forces are trying to suppress the product.

United Church Thrift Sale in 43rd year

For the past 43 years, the Strathmore United
Church has held two thrift sales a year, drawing
in thousands of thrifty shoppers searching for bar-
gains, while simultaneously raising funds to sup-
port the church and to donate to local, provincial
and international causes.
“We are blessed with very broad support from the
community and beyond,” said Sharon White with
the Strathmore United Church. “These folks donate,
volunteer and purchase items. We have seen fami-
lies grow over the years and see their children and
grandchildren coming to sales. We know by the ac-
tions and words of our customers what these sales
have come to mean to them and we are grateful for
it as are they.”
Last year alone proceeds not only supported
the church but also the Wheatland Crisis Society,
Strathmore and Wheatland County Christmas Ham-
per Society, the Strathmore Handi-Bus, Wheatland
and Area Hospice Society and School Fuel pro-
grams, locally. Provincially they donated to St. Ste-
phen’s College, the Mustard Seed, Calgary Drop-in
Centre, Calgary Urban Project Society and the Bis-
sell Centre. National programs they supported were
St. Andrew’s College, Canadian Foodgrains Bank,
Friends of the Observer and the Women’s Inter-
church Council of Canada.
The event has nearly quadrupled in size over the
years moving from only filling the church basement
to including the main floor,
followed by the upper floor
and then moving to include
an outside area where a large shed was built to also
hold donations. The three-day sale takes weeks to
prepare and many volunteers to put on.
Many types of items are not accepted as dona-
tions for the sale such as large furniture pre-autho-
rized by a volunteer, appliances, mattresses, water
coolers, televisions and console televisions, com-
puters, printers, scanners, organs and pianos, sofa
beds, exercise equipment, VHS movies, baby and
child car seats and any items that are broken or do
not work.
“These items are not accepted for various reasons.
Some are unsalable, some need Freon removed
(which is) an extra expense for us, car seats are
illegal to sell, large furniture, appliances and sofa
beds are too heavy and unwieldy for us to handle
and space becomes an issue,” said White, adding
that almost everything else is accepted.
Accepted items include clothing in all sizes for
men, women and children, shoes, purses, accesso-
ries, household items, small appliances, garden and
yard items, books, CD’s, records, seasonal deco-
rations, jewelry, toys, games and puzzles, antique
items and more. There will also be a “quality item”
room for more luxurious items which are marked
at a higher price.
Donations will be accepted between April 29 and
May 2. Volunteers will begin sorting the items on
April 29 and anything kept outdoors can be pur-
chased at any time after April 29. Books are avail-
able for purchase after April 30 and the sale on all
other items will run from May 2 to 4.

The Wheatland Athletic Association
(WAA) capped off the 2018-2019 season
with their annual awards banquet on
April 5 at the Strathmore Civic Centre.
It was a successful campaign for all
three teams in the double-A associa-
tion, as the peewee, bantam and midget
teams all qualified for the playoff tour-
nament.
The Wheatland Braves peewee team
finished the season with an impressive
19-11-7 season, good enough for fourth
place in the SCAHL South Division.
It was a season to remember for the
Wheatland Warriors bantam team, as
they dominated the SCAHL with a 36-
4-1 record on the season, en route to
sweeping the South playoff tournament,
the league finals and the 2019 provin-
cial championship tournament.
The Wheatland Chiefs midget team
closed the season with a 19-8-3 record
and making it to the final of the South
playoff tournament, losing 2-1 in double
overtime.
However, the banquet provided the
chance for families and friends to gather
formally for one last time and celebrate
the season that was.

Expressions the Dance Gallery has
been successfully dancing their way
through festivals and competitions
this spring and is in no hurry to give
up the spotlight.
In their first festival of the season,
57 dance entries with dancers ranging
in the age of 5 to 17 from Expressions
competed at the Sparkle Dance Fes-
tival in Stettler on March 22 to 24. It
was the gallery’s second time entering
into that festival.
“We were very excited to bring home
eight overall awards … our students’
success is because we have such a
great qualified and diversified faculty,”
said Michelle Murdoch, administration
manager at Expressions, adding that
both pre-competitive and competitive
teams performed at the festival.
Awards included the high gold and
choreographer award for contempo-
rary trio, Cadence Goodeagle, Jaymie
Smith and Teagan Rabbit Carrier; Mia
Srubowich won the solo scholarship
ballet and tied in jazz; Teagan Rabbit
Carrier won solo scholarship for con-
temporary dance; Carson Doore and
Teagan Rabbit Carrier won the hip hop
duet with the highest score for ages

Level 2 high score, the Beyond the

val in MacEwan Hall at the University
of Calgary from April 5-7, the com-
petition teams had 49 entries with
19 dancers competing between 8 to
18 years old. Jaymie Smith won the
overall highest score for solo 15 to 16
years old for her contemporary solo
and Charleigh Burns and Malia Mur-

dance exams and their year-end showcase.

Dancers range in age from 2 to 18
with competitive students between 4
and 18 years old. They also offer adult
and parent and tot classes for any in-
terested in learning how to dance.
“Expressions the Dance Gallery is
not only a competitive studio, but also
a recreation studio with students of all
ages, abilities and commitment levels,”
said Murdoch.
Upcoming competitions for the
young dancers are the Catch a Rising
Star dance festival in Drumheller from
April 26-28, and Millennium Dance
Festival in Calgary on May 3-5.
Many dancers are also working
hard to prepare for dance exams such
as the upcoming Royal Academy of
Dance ballet exams, as well as Acro-
batic Arts exams.
Expressions will also hold their
year-end showcase on June 2 at the
Glenmore Christian Academy in Cal-
gary, and an aerial showcase at the
Strathmore High School on June 20.
“I love going to competitions, I love
dancing on stage and being able to
dance with my friends … I just love
everything about it (and) my favou-
rite part is working together with my
friends,” said acro duo dancer and
high score winner Malia Murdoch.
