On Father’s Day, 1999,
Max Tague, Jr., was killed
by a drunk driver in Rock-
ford, Illinois. He, along
with his mother, father,
cousins, nephews, and
brothers-in-law all served
in the United States Ma-
rine Corps.
In the early fall of 2010,
Max Tague, Sr, finished
Max’s Toys for Tots Bike
as a tribute to Max Jr., his
service to his country, the
Marine Corps, and their
Toys for Tots program.
The 1947 Harley Knuckle-
head belonged to his son
from many years ago. The
bike has been in a fire,
sold and bought back into
the Tague family.
Now, some years, and al-
most $30,000 later, the
classic cruiser was re-
stored to reflect its owners
service to the US, Marine
Dress Blues with many
details throughout the
bike. 9 EGA pins, the
Eagle, Globe, and Anchor,
Bike
the Marine Corps symbol,
decorate the handle bar,
center console and license
plate. The leather seat
(provided by Wicked Cac-
tus Leathers) resembles
the Marine Dress hat. The
side shifter handle is a
custom ball with the Ma-
rine logo inside. This 63
year old bike, with lots of
help from Max Jr’s proud
father, the expert paint job
of Chopper John at Sun
City Choppers, and the
mechanical expertise from
Jimbo and his staff at Bik-
ers Custom, has definitely
found new life as a symbol
for the Marine Corps.

the Marine’s Toys for Tots
program here in El Paso,
where it appears in a local
TV spot promoting the

What motivates a person
to action? For many, it is a
personal need or want. For
Wrench and Brian from
the Rats MC, it was their
mother’s battles with
breast cancer that moti-
vated them. They organ-
ized this run to benefit
cancer research and pa-
tient support in El Paso.
The Rat Run had over 90
registered riders and raised
$700. A representative
from the American Cancer
Society accepted the check
at the last stop from at
King’s X bar. The money,
according to Michelle
from the ACS local office,
stated that the money will
be put to good use. There
are many expenses that
cancer patients have over
the course of their treat-
ment. Expenses like wigs,
lymphedema sleeves,
prosthetics, specialized
bras that may not be cov-
ered by insurance. There
are other expenses like
transportation services to
and from treatment centers
and the 1-800 number that
provides treatment and fi-
nancial counseling. “We’re
really grateful to Brian and
the Rats as they organized
this themselves and the pa-
tients will benefit greatly
from their donation.”
For Brian and Wrench,
founding members of the 1
year old club, this was
their chance to get in-
volved and be part of the
solution. Wrench says that
he did not see much partic-
ipation specifically for
breast cancer. His mother
is now a 5th year cancer
survivor who now goes to
regular check-ups. “You
get to value life a lot more.
I spend more time with
her. (When something like
this happens)…you have
to stay strong, and sup-

portive, and positive. We
had many people coming
up to us sharing their sto-
ries and being supportive.”
Being supportive is some-
thing the biker community
is known for. “There is a
misconception of bikers as
thugs and thieves. We
know that is not true. We
ride by ourselves and with
our club. You find there is
respect from one biker to
another, one club to an-
other,” says Brian Arm-
strong, Rat Treasurer. His
own mother passed away
in 2000 after a long battle
with cancer. “My family
has a history of cancer.
After a while, I got tired of
hearing about it and not
doing anything. I wanted
to contribute with a club
that has the same concerns
as me. When the club was
formed, I knew this (can-
cer run) had to be a part of
the club’s activities.” This

year, the Rats have already
organized this and another
run that benefitted the
daughter of another biker
killed by a drunk driver.
There are plans for a 2011
ride to benefit patients
with Spina Bifida as well.
According to Brian, to
“rat” something out is to
create a normal item, like
a bike, into your own
statement, to re-create it in
your image. With this run,
the Rats MC definitely
made their own statement
in honor of their moms
and their battles with this
illness.

 Tips in Preventing
Safety in riding motorcy-
cles in order to prevent in-
juries is a very critical
issue especially during the
peak of motorcycle sea-
son. The American Acad-
emy of Orthopaedic
Surgeons are very much
concerned about this issue
since there are almost al-
ways a lot of motorcycle
accidents happening at
least one every few days.
Most injuries noted from
the people brought in the
Level One Trauma Units
range from serious muscu-
loskeletal injuries, open
fractures and head traumas
from motorcycle acci-
dents.
The increasing accidents
are linked to the increased
number of motorcycles on
the road. Records show
that since 1997, motorcy-
cles sales increased to
more than 90%. Last 2001,
motorcycles represented

only 2.2 percent of all reg-
istered vehicles in the
United States and ac-
counted for 0.34 percent of
vehicle miles traveled.
However, crashes involv-
ing motorcycles accounted
for 7.6 percent of total
traffic fatalities on Amer-
ica's roadways. As recently
reported by the US De-
partment of Transporta-
tion's National Highway
Traffic Safety Administra-
tion (NHTSA), in 2002
there were 42,815 fatali-
ties from motorcycle acci-
dents. What’s alarming is
this is the highest level of
fatality report since 1990.
While some accidents
cause injuries or lifetime
paralysis, some result to
fatalities. Thus, these inci-
dents should be a constant
reminder for motorcyclists
to protect themselves.
According to Maureen
Finnegan, MD, professor
at the University of
Texas and or-
thopaedic sur-
geon at
Parkland
Hospital in
Dallas,
most mo-
torcycle
injuries
involve the
extremities
and the spinal
cord. Majority of fatalities
are results of head injuries.
Thus, she said that the
most important tip for mo-
torcycle safety is to wear a
helmet. Wearing helmets
are estimated to be 29 per-
cent effective in prevent-
ing fatal injuries and 67
percent effective in pre-
venting brain injuries for
motorcyclists. Another
thing is the wearing of
proper clothing in riding
and of course, really learn-
ing how to ride a motorcy-
cle and handle certain
situations throughout the
ride.
Here are other helpful tips
in preventing motorcycle
injuries:
•Get professionally trained
in motorcycle riding. Re-
search shows that more
than 90 percent of all rid-
ers that were involved in
crashes are just self-taught
or taught by friends.
•Secure your license
to drive. Nearly
27 percent
or one out
of four
motorcy-
clists in-
volved in
fatal
crashes in
2001 was not
properly li-
censed.
•Do not drink and ride.
Those most at risk in get-
ting into accidents are ine-
briated motorcyclists.
•Use helmets that meet the
DOT (Department of
Transportation) standards.
•Wear protective clothing
– this includes goggles or
sun shades for eye protec-
tion, jacket, full- fingered
gloves, long pants and
over-the-ankle boots.
•Make sure that your mo-
torcycle clothing and gears
are made of abrasion-resis-
tant material, such as
leather. Avoid loose, flail-
ing clothing that could im-
pair your vision.
•Wearing brightly colored
garments may help other
vehicles see/notice you.
•Proper maintenance and
monitoring of your bike is
of high importance. Ob-
serve proper lane position-
ing of your bike to further

increase your
visibility
to driv-
ers.
Keeping
a "space
cushion"
between your bike and
other traffic should also be
kept in mind.
•Avoid sharing a lane with
a car since its driver may
not expect you to be there
or may not become aware
of your presence. Most
drivers look out for other
bigger vehicles that they
may fail to notice you in-
stantly unless something
has happened already.
•Ride according to your
skill level. Never overesti-
mate yourself.

 Motorcycle Trailers - Which One
Do You Need?

When you need to haul
your motorcycle either for
a long trip or a short jaunt
across town, are you going
to know which motorcycle
trailers you are going to
want to use to get you
from point A to point B.
The truth is you have a
few options for transport-
ing your motorcycle. Here
are some of the options
that you have.
Enclosed Trailer
The enclosed motorcycle
trailers are the real deal
when it comes to hauling
capabilities. Not only do
you have room for your
bike, but you also have
room for other gear and
accessories that you may
need to take along on your
trip. With regard to the trip
itself, then enclosed trailer
is probably best suited for
long trips, although it is
just as easy to use an en-
closed trailer for a short
trip as well. The enclosed
trailer can be beneficial
because if can keep your
bike and your gear com-
pletely dry in the case of
inclement weather. You
also have the ability to
haul more than one bike if
you need to.
Standard Trailer
The standard two wheel
single axle trailer is
probably the
most com-
monly
used trailer on
the market.
You can
use these
trailers to
haul your
motorcy-
cle on short
trips as well as longer trips
that extend over hundreds
of miles. The disadvantage
that these trailers have is
that they don't really offer
any other storage opportu-
nity other than for your
motorcycle. They are
great for hauling your mo-
torcycle across town as
well as they take less time
to load and unload.
Motorcycle Trailer
The single motorcycle
trailer is probably the least
efficient of trailers because
you can haul one motorcy-
cle and that is about it.
There is no room for gear
or any other items. If you
need to use this type of
trailer, typically you are
only using it in situations
where you just need to get
your motorcycle move and
that's it. These types of
trailers are sometimes used
in moving situations.

that will make you drool!

We all love a good motor-
cycle scene and obviously
the mystery of the charac-
ter sat on top of it. The
leather clad, tall (no doubt)
handsome man atop any
one of the automotive in-
dustries' leading dare-devil
machines just oozes cool,
fierce and sexy.
Here are the Top 5 motor-
cycles and their characters
that will be sure to get
your pulse racing on and
off the bike.
Not for me to deny anyone
Wild Hogs is the action
movie that showcases the
Harley Davidson well and
for those of you who like a
more mature character this
could be the feel-good
film for you. The family
genre of this flick follows
a group of four middle-
aged friends as they em-
bark on a journey to see
how it feels to be a ‘real
biker'. The Harley David-
sons within this feature in-
clude the XL1200C
Sportster Custom, FXSTS
Springer Softail, a stan-
dard Black Fatboy and the
almighty Screaming Eagle
Fatboy which luckily
meant that a top priority
included motorcycle serv-
icing in Scotland.
The coolest films with a
motorcycle in the 1990's
were undoubtedly Termi-
nator 1 and 2. Terminator
1 released in 1990 de-

Centauros MC gives back

On October 17th, the Cen-
tauros MC presented a
check for $1000 to David
Murillo at the Children’s
Hospital at the Sierra Prov-
idence Pediatric Oncology
unit. David had appeared
on Channel 26 news asking
for financial help from the
public for his on-going bat-
tle with leukemia. David’s
family, many from his
hometown of Chihuahua,
was there for the presenta-
tion. Centauros member
Rogelio Garcia stated that
they will be there for
David as much as possible

in the future. The money
was raised due in large part
to the Centauros charity
runs created for just this
purpose.
Centauros MC also con-
tributed $900 to the family
of 5 year old Andrew
Montes, who regrettably
passed away in October in
MD Anderson Hospital in
Houston. The money was
used so they could trans-
port his body back to El
Paso for his funeral. An-
drew was buried October
the 19th.
