Chapter 3

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

This chapter includes the results after gathering data from the local agency

of the municipality of Montevista from November 6, 2018 to November 20, 2018.

With this data, the researchers determine the flood prone areas in the

municipality of Montevista near the Manat River. The quantitative data gathered

from the results were organized for further analysis and interpretations.

The flood prone areas were determined according to the flow capacity of

the Manat River, elevation of the municipality of Montevista, past flood history,

drainage systems and the rainfall distribution in the municipality of Montevista.

In addition, each figure has its corresponding explanation. The data

discussions were based on the data gathered. The data gathered where

understand and interpreted by the observations of the researchers.

3.1 DISCUSSION ABOUT THE DATA GATHERED

3.1.1 Flow capacity of the Manat River.

Table 3.1.1 show the table of the average discharge of Manat River during

the data gathering using float method in determining it following the steps

mentioned in the last chapter. In determining the velocity, the researcher take

light materials, put it to the water and record the time from point A to point B

and multipled to the cross-sectional area which is the depth of the water

multiplied by the length of the river.

It shows that the average discharge is 149.78 cu.m/s after taking the

discharge in three stations. As the cross sectional area is equivalent to the width

multiplied to the depth of the water, if the discharge of the Manat river rises, the

cross sectional area and the velocity of the water also rise and make the water

expand to low elevated areas.

Station Velocity Cross-section area Discharge

Distance/time Width x Depth Velocity x

Cross-sectional Area

1 1.4018m/s 75.6x1.40=105.84 sq.m 148.37 cu.m/s

2 1.5467m/s 72.3x1.37=99.05 sq.m 153.20 cu.m/s

3 1.50m/s 75.8x1.3=98.54 sq.m 147.81 cu.m/s

Average 1.4828m/s 101.1433 sq.m 149.79 cu.m/s

3.1.2 Elevation

Figure 3.1.2 shows the map of the municipality of Montevista and its

elevation. It shows that the elevation of the municipality of Montevista is a big

factor why flood always occur. Also, the elevation near the Manat River is too

low that’s why flood is easy to occur.

Figure 3.1.2a shows the elevation of the municipality of Montevista

without the barangay boundaries, creeks and rivers and roads.

Table 3.1.2 shows the elevation of the municipality of Montevista from

other municipality in Compostela Valley in meter above sea level. It shows that

Montevista is low elevated among other municipality which also the reason why

Montevista serves as the catch basins of water from high elevated municipality.

3.1.3 Flood history

In this part, the researchers must put the tabulated gathered data of flood

happenings in the municipality of Montevista with the affected areas, affected

individuals and damage dealt by each occurrence but the needed data is not

available during data gathering because of some reasons. Since the data not yet

available, the researchers gather some flood happenings in the municipality of

Montevista from the internet.

Based on researchers experienced, Montevista is known in flooding since

this municipality is the catch basin of the water of other municipality

surrounding it. The flood happenings mainly occur during the typhoon hits or

after days of heavy rains.

On January 12, 2014, Over 1,000 people in low-lying barangays in

Compostela Valley, particularly those living near the Manat River, have been

evacuated due to flood waters that rose after five days of continuous rains.

On December 20, 2017, typhoon Vinta struck the land of Mindanao.

Typhoon Vinta creates heavy rain in Mindanao especially in Compostela Valley

leading to flood due to unstoppable rise of water from high elevated areas to

Manat River which passes Montevista that affects local barangay near to i
3.1.4 Average rainfall distribution

Table 3.1.4 shows the average rainfall distribution in the municipality of

Montevista. The researchers believe that the main cause of flooding is rainfall.

In the table below, it shows that in the month of December and January

mostly the heavy rainfall occur in the municipality of Montevista. As the effect

during these months of heavy rains, it causes flood which may affect the flow

capacity of the water in the river and rise up water level and affects the low

elevated area and reached by the water.

Montevista
3.1.5 Drainage systems

In this part of chapter 3, the researchers must put the gathered data map

about the drainage systems in the municipality of Montevista and its effect in the

flooding as one of the parameters. The researchers is advised to make their own

drainage system map but the researchers cannot conduct such action because of

safety reasons since Manat River water level this time is too high and drainage

locations are too dange

The researchers identified the flood prone areas in the municipality of

Montevista (Figure 3.2) after gathering data about the flow capacity of Manat

River, Elevation of the municipality of Montevista, flood history of municipality

of Montevista and affected areas, rainfall distribution in the municipality of

Montevista and by the use of flood susceptibility parameters (Table 3.2) as basis.

The flood prone areas in the municipality of Montevista are the barangays

near to Manat River which are Banagbanag, Linoan, San Jose, New Visayas,

Dauman, Bankerohan Sur, Bankerohan Norte, Tapia and Conception. Also, this

areas and barangays also in low elevation.
