Lesson Plan

CCSS (or NGSS or C3 Framework if sci or ss):

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.B.4
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or
whole number by a fraction.

I can statement or other way of communicating to students the goal of the lesson:

I can find the product of a whole number and a fraction

What you want your MT to be doing during the lesson:

I would like my mentor to be helping out a group if they are either struggling with the content or needing to
be helped with behavior issues.

How this lesson relates to previous lessons and/or DATA (why are you teaching this?):

I am teaching this because it is a learning objective that must be met from our Go Math curriculum. The
objective was taken from 7.2 of their math books.

Steps/Procedure:

Time (in Minutes): Steps:

1 min Read our to do list

To do:
 Read learning goal together
 Math Journal: 1 example
 Work with Miss Oakley
 Board Game!
 Final Check

Read our learning goal

1 min
1) Student A reads it
2) Student B reads it
3) Student C reads it

4 min Math Journal

“Please open up your math journal. We will be

doing this example right underneath yesterday’s
work”

Students will write down 5 x 8/10

Students will solve silently

We will solve together as a class

5-7min Explain and model rules of board game

1. Roll the dice, move forward that

number of spaces

2. Pick up a card

3. Card X fraction (multiply them

together) 3 X ¾ =
*Everyone in group will multiply each
round

4. If you are correct, stay on the space! If

you are wrong, go back to the start!

My expectations:

- Everyone does every math problem

- You are showing your work on a sheet of
scrap paper
- You are doing MATH the whole time.
30 Min Stay focused! 

This will be on slide. We will also model together

as a class at the front of the room.

Board Game/ Small Group Work

“When I say the Go Word you may meet up with
your group to start your game! If you finish early
you may play again, finish page 425 and 426 in
your Go Math book. Go!”

*While board game is happening I will be

meeting with group 1

Small Group work

Small group work will vary with group but will be

related to fraction multiplication

I will be asking them what they are struggling

with and be prepared with example problems
(This method was met with a lot of success in our
last chapter so I would like to try it again)

Final Check
3 min
Restate the objective: I can find the product of a
whole number and a fraction

“Group 7- Describe how your group worked

together to solve the board game problems?

What questions do you have?

What are you feeling confused about?”

Academic/Social/Linguistic Supports for individual students. Part of this MUST

include your plan for SPECIFIC STUDENTS (you can name them here or put an initial):

Special Ed/504 Accommodations:

Emergent Bilinguals: P, C, M will have the learning goal written in Spanish so that they
understand the objective. P will be challenged to work in a group separate from C and
M. C and M will be in a group together for language and social emotional support.

Tier 2 Interventions:
Tier 3 Interventions:

Assessment (How you know they understood your goal, include DATA):

I will make formative assessments of the group I am working with. I will be able to observe if they
understand fraction multiplication when they are called on to do a solo example.

I will come back to the learning objective at the end of the lesson and ask students what remaining
questions they have.

I will call on group 7 (random pick) to explain fraction multiplication to the class (based on their
experience with the board game)
