HDF 190: FLITE (FIRST-YEAR LEADERS INSPIRED TO EXCELLENCE)

URI MINOR IN LEADERSHIP STUDIES, CENTER FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

CORE REQUIREMENT FOR THE LEADERSHIP MINOR

LEARNING CONTRACT

Goal: To identify and utilize my Strengths in an organizational/interpersonal setting that

aligns with the mission, vision, values and sponsored programs and activities of URI’s
Center for Student Leadership Development.

Activity: Service Project

Annotation: Being a part of Rotaract or completing a service project would be a great fit
for me for many reasons. First, I have always wanted to get more involved in and around
my community on and off campus. I believe by joining Rortaract or doing a service
project will help me fulfill that. Rotaract is a club at the University of Rhode Island that
serves the campus and the community. Many of my strengths and values connect back to
doing service. My first four strengths include, kindness, teamwork, love, and leadership.
All of these I believe relate directly to doing service projects. Teamwork and Leadership
are of course very important when working with any group of people, especially doing
any kind of service work. Also, Kindness and Love can be necessary as well, specifically
when taking care of or helping someone. Knowing these are my top strengths make me
more confident going into a club like Rotaract or doing a service project because I know I
would be able to bring four very important aspects to the table. Lastly, my Arranger value
would be useful for service projects because I am able to organize things and I like to
help make all the pieces fit together to complete the common goal.

The Service Project I chose to do was a Campus Clean Up here at URI. Myself and my
FLIGHT group spent 2 hours cleaning up around the dorms, the river near Keaney gym,
and the parking lot. While doing this project I saw my strengths of Teamwork and
Leadership. I believe that I was able to help my team work together when deciding where
our project should be based and how we would go about setting a date and time. As a
leader I knew there were important aspects that needed to happen before the project
happened. We needed to find the right materials for the day of and make sure everyone
was available. During the project I made sure that the team was working together to
collect as much trash as possible and ensure everyone was contributing in a positive way.
Overall the campus clean up was a success and I believe we have made an impact on our
campus and hope that it inspires others to do the same.
