Goal: SWBAT perform F&F with appropriate instrument posture


1. Address posture IMMEDIATELY
2. Tell students three elements of good posture
a. 1. Feet flat on floor
b. 2. Straight Backs
c. 3. Sitting on edge of the chair
d. (4. Relaxed shoulders; no tension in the body!)
e. (5. Make yourself as big as possible - take in more air!)
3. Tell students if they are NOT using excellent posture, tone will not be as
good and muscles within the body cannot work as efficiently
a. Be proud of your playing! You are all great and talented musicians!
4. Want students to keep their bodies healthy and play with their best sound!
5. Play through beginning to m. 37; tell students I will be watching their
posture
a. (ASSESSMENT) Keep an eye on student’s posture while they are
playing
b. (Is it different during the accented sections and half note sections?)
6. Give feedback regarding posture

Goal: SWBAT perform F&F with accurate style & phrasing at m. 21-28
1. Tell students we are going to work on balance in the middle section!
2. Have students play from m. 21-28
3. Create a scene for the music: It’s a warm summer night, and a great big
crowd is ready to watch a big, beautiful fireworks display!
4. Identify the two parts going on in the music:
a. Excitement of the Crowd: Clarinets, Saxophones, Tbone, Euphonium,
Percussion
i. Have them play!
b. The Fireworks: Flutes, Trumpets, Bells
i. Have them play!
5. Work with “Excitement of the Crowd”
a. Ask Clarinets, Saxophones, Tbone, Euphonium, Percussion play at m.
21
i. Students should crescendo across two whole measures and then
decrescendo across the next two measures (clarinets, alto,
tbone, euphonium) OR
ii. Students should enter at a strong dynamic and then decrescendo
across two measures (bari saxophone)
iii. [Trombone, Euphonium, Bari Saxophone DO NOT have a
decrescendo marked in their parts; ask them to write it in their
parts to remember to decrescendo every time they play]
b. Involve all students for crescendo and decrescendo activity
i. Teacher will model on a concert Bb in quarter notes
ii. Play: soft - loud - soft (echo)
iii. Play: soft - soft - loud - soft (echo)
iv. Play: soft - soft - loud - loud - soft (echo)
v. Play: soft - soft- soft - loud - loud - soft (echo)
vi. Play: soft - soft- soft - loud - loud - soft - soft (echo)
vii. Play: soft - soft - soft - soft - loud - loud - soft - soft (echo)
viii. Play: soft- soft - soft - soft - loud - loud - soft - soft - soft (echo)
c. Have “Excitement of the crowd” play the crescendo and decrescendo
at m. 21
6. Work with “The Fireworks”
a. Ask Flutes, Trumpets and Bells to play at m. 23-24
b. Students should enter strong and slowly decay like a firework that
lights up the sky and slowly fades away, an interruption that bursts
through the texture
c. Ask them to play again with a firework in mind
7. Address posture
8. Have all students to play from m. 21-37
a. Students should play in the same style, all parts need to be heard
including the “excitement of the crowd” and “the fireworks”

Goal: SWBAT perform F&F with accurate dynamics at m. 29-37


1. Tell students to look at their parts at m. 31
a. All parts but the trumpets have “crescendo poco a poco”
2. Ask students if they know what “crescendo poco a poco” means
a. Little by little, gradually, over time, etc.
3. Refer back to crescendo decrescendo activity, we are doing the crescendo
portion of that activity at this point in the music
4. Doing the same thing, but just a crescendo over a longer period of time
a. Teacher will model on a concert Bb in quarter notes
b. Play: soft - medium - soft (echo)
c. Play: soft - soft - medium - loud (echo)
d. Play: soft - soft - medium - medium - loud (echo)
e. Play: soft - soft- medium - medium - loud - loud (echo)
f. Play: soft - soft- soft - medium - medium - loud - loud (echo)
g. Play: soft - soft - soft - medium - medium - medium - loud - loud
(echo)
h. Play: soft- soft - soft - medium - medium - medium - loud - loud -
loud (echo)
5. Address posture
6. Have students play again at m. 29-37
7. Give feedback regarding crescendo/decrescendo and poco a poco crescendo
8. Play from m. 21-45

Goal: SWBAT perform F&F with accurate balance at m. 37-45


1. Have flutes, trumpets, chimes and bells play at m. 37, tell them I’ll be
listening for accents
a. Raise your hand if you can hear flutes, trumpets, chimes and bells
playing ACCENTS
b. Ask students what their written dynamic is… IT’S FORTE!
2. Have everyone else play at m. 37
a. Everyone is marked forte here! But the trumpets, flute, bells and
chimes need to be heard over the sea of half notes!
3. Tell students that quarter notes need to be brought out and louder than half
notes or whole notes
a. How many are playing quarter notes? How many are playing
half/whole notes
4. Play m. 37-End
5. Play from beginning to end; reminders
a. Posture!
b. Excitement of Crowd & The Fireworks
c. Exaggerate Crescendo and Decrescendo
d. Exaggerate Crescendo into m. 37
e. Bring out quarter notes at m. 37
f. Decrescendo m. 17-21?
