Problem Set #1 — Particle Kinematics

1/ The position of a particle is given by s=2t3-40t2+200t-50, where s is in meters and t is in seconds.
Plot the position, velocity, and acceleration as functions of time for the first 12 seconds of motion.
Determine the time at which the velocity is zero.

2/ A vehicle enters a test section of straight road at s = 0 with a speed of 40 km/h. It then undergoes
an acceleration which varies with displacement as shown. Determine the velocity v of the vehicle as it
passes the position s = 0.2 km.

3/ The car is traveling at a constant speed ʋo=100 km/h on the level portion of the road. When the 6-
percent (tanɵ=6/100) incline is encountered, the driver does not change the throttle setting and
consequently the car decelerates at the constant rate (g.sinɵ). Determine the speed of the car; a) 10
seconds after passing point A, b) When s=100 m

4/ A motorcycle patrolman starts from rest at A two seconds after a car, speeding at the constant rate
of 120 km/h, passes point A. If the patrolman accelerates at the rate of 6 m/s2 until he reaches his
maximum permissible speed of 150 km/h, which he maintains, calculate the distance s from point A to
the point at which he overtakes the car.

5/ A particle moving along the positive x-direction with an initial velocity of 12 m/s is subjected to a
retarding force that gives it a negative acceleration which varies linearly with time for the first 4
seconds as shown. For the next 5 seconds the force is constant and the acceleration remains constant.
Plot the velocity of the particle during the 9 seconds and specify its value at t=4s. Also find the distance
Δx traveled by the particle from its position at t=0 to the point where it reverses its direction.

6/ A race driver traveling at a speed of 250 km/h on the straightaway applies his brakes at point A and
reduces his speed at a uniform rate to 200 km/h at C in a distance of 150+150=300 m. Calculate the
magnitude of the total acceleration of the race car an instant after it passes point B.

7/ A motorcyclist at A is traveling at 20m/s when he wishes to pass the truck T which is traveling at a
constant speed of 20 m/s. To do so the motorcyclist accelerates at 2 m/s 2 until reaching a maximum
speed of 25m/s. If he then maintains this speed, determine the time needed for him to reach a point
located 35m in front of the truck. Draw the V-t and s-t graphs for the motorcycle during this time.

8/ It is observed that the skier leaves the ramp A at an angle A=25 with the horizontal. If he strikes
the ground at B, determine his initial speed VA and the time of flight tAB.

9/ The missile at A takes off from rest and rises vertically to B, where its fuel runs out in 8 seconds. If
the acceleration varies with time as shown, determine the missile’s height hB and speed VB. If by
internal controls the missile is then suddenly pointed 45 as shown and allowed to travel in free flight,
determine the maximum height attained, hC, and the range R to where it crashes at D.

10/ The roller at A is moving upward with a velocity of VA= 3 m/s and has an acceleration of aA= 4 m/s2
when sA= 4 m. Determine the velocity and acceleration of block B at this instant.

11/ If motors A and B draw their attached cables with an acceleration of a = ( 0.2 t ) m/s2, where t is
in seconds, determine the speed of the block when it reaches a height h = 4 m, starting from the rest.
Also how much time does it take to reach this height?

12/ At the instant shown, the car A has a speed of 20 km/h, which is being increased at the rate of 300
km/h2 as the car enters express way. At the same instant car B is decelerating at 250 km/h2 while
travelling forward at 100 km/h. Determine the velocity and acceleration of A with respect to B.

13/ The crate is being lifted up the inclined plane using the motor M and the rope and pulley
arrangement shown. Determine the speed at which the cable must be taken up by the motor in order
to move the crate up the plane with a constant speed of 1.2 m/s.

14/ A man can swim at 1.2 m/s in still water. He wishes to cross the 12-m-wide river to point B, 9 m
downstream. If the river flows with a velocity of 0.6 m/s , determine the speed of the man and the
time needed to make the crossing. Note: While in the water he must not direct himself toward point
B to reach this point. Why?

of the acceleration of the front of the train, B, at the instant it reaches point A (y=0).

16/ Collars A and B are connected to the cord that passes over the small pulley at C. When A is located
at D, B is 24 m to the left of D. If A moves at a constant speed of 2 m/s to the right; determine the
speed of B when A is 4 m to the right of D.

17/ For the instant represented, car A has a speed of 100 km/h, which is increasing at the rate of 8
km/h each second. Simultaneously, car B also has a speed of 100 km/h as it rounds the turn and is
slowing down at the rate of 8 km/h each second. Determine the acceleration that car B appears to
have to an observer in car A.
