Update of in-flight PTU logic

(Single Aisle Aircraft)
Introduction

 Today situation on Single Aisle family :

In case of Green or Yellow Hydraulic loss at take off:
 the corresponding ECAM caution is inhibited
 the PTU starts running automatically
 it can lead to an PTU overspeed and to a dual hydraulic loss

 New PTU Inhibition logic to avoid the dual hydraulic loss

Failure cases where PTU should be switched OFF

ECAM caution already covers these cases :

The crew has to switch OFF the PTU and the affected
hydraulic engine pump…

When Green hydraulic caution is displayed, it may be rapidly

Failure cases where PTU should be switched OFF

• Time and situation permitting, ECAM amber cautions should

be considered without delay (FCOM 1.31.10)

• However, this may not be sufficient to prevent a double

hydraulic failure subsequent to a high hydraulic G or Y
leakage during takeoff.

New Automatic PTU In-flight Inhibition Logic

What does change in flight ?

PTU will now automatically stop after a Green or

Yellow low pressure is detected for more than 6
seconds
(even during “G (Y) SYS LO LVL” ECAM caution inhibition phase )

New Automatic PTU In-flight Inhibition Logic

Operational consequences

 In case of hyd leak in flight :

 No longer risk of dual hydraulic loss if no rapid crew action .
 Follow “G(Y) SYS LO PR” ECAM caution when triggered

 In case of hyd leak on ground :

 No PTU logic change : Follow “G(Y) SYS LO PR” ECAM caution

Update on PTU Logic 14 OLM FBW 2006

New Automatic PTU In-flight Inhibition Logic

Operational consequences (cont’d)

 In case of single engine taxi , or hydraulic pump failure or

engine failure… :
 No change : PTU runs to recover the normal pressure in the
affected system (low pressure condition no longer detected after
6 seconds)

 No ECAM change with new PTU logic:

 ECAM still requests to switch OFF the PTU
– Only Pilot confirmation (in flight) with new logic
– Common ECAM definition with old logic

Update on PTU Logic 15 OLM FBW 2006

New Automatic PTU In-flight Inhibition Logic

New PTU logic covered by 3 modifications:

MOD 34236 : Install provisions for new PTU inhibition logic
MOD 35879 : Improve wiring for new PTU inhibition logic
MOD 35938 : Activate new PTU inhibition logic

In Service Evaluation of mod 35938 to be started by Oct 2006

After successful ISE, this modification will convert into standard

modification for all new SA aircraft.

This modification will also be available for retrofit.

Conclusion

 PTU now automatically inhibited in flight in case of

significant hydraulic leak.
No longer risk of dual hydraulic loss if no rapid crew
action

 No ECAM change for fleet commonality

 In Service Evaluation planned to start in October 06
