Instruction: The following are case histories of different people. Your job as a potential doctor is
to consider the symptoms of each person and then to state in your medical opinion with the help
of the guide questions (G.Q.) given. Use your notes on Endocrine System.

1. Jennifer had a case of goiter due to hypothyroidism. The reason why she have goiter is due
to her lack of iodine in her diet. Jennifer lives in the mountainous region of Cordillera and
eats vegetables more frequently. On top of that, she is allergic to any kind of seafood there
is. What would you advise her?

G.Q. - In what way could Jennifer acquire iodine if she is allergic to seafoods?

2. Ralph experiences a certain condition wherein He noticed that his limbs are shorter. He
might look like a baby but in reality, He is 25 years older. His condition has led him to
experiance bullying by his co-workers. What happened to Ralph?

G.Q. - What kind of condition/disorder does Ralph have? What part of the endocrine
system and hormone is involved? How can you explain what happened to him?

3. Jim is confused on how he developed his secondary sex characteristics. He started to


notice that his muscle are getting bigger, shoulders are getting broader and has facial and
body hair.

G.Q. - What part of the endocrine system and hormone is involved for developing Jim’s
secondary sex characteristics?
4. Sarah is 46 years old. Yesterday she was doing her laundry, as she tries to lift a humper full
of clothes, she suddenly feels a sensation that something has snapped on her left leg. Along
with this is an excrutiating pain that immobilizes her. She called for help and was
immediately rushed to the hospital. Upon looking at her record, you’ve noticed that she is
taking a medicine that has a high concentration of Parathyroid Hormone.

G.Q. - What disease/disorder does Sarah have? What is the connection of her medication
to which led to her condition?

5. Liza is a workaholic. She always finished her tasks before the deadline. She is usually seen
by her workmates, family and friends as someone who is always looking at gadgets and
computers. One night when Liza tries to close her eyes and sleep, she fails. Feeling
helpless and exhausted she consulted you for your help.

G. Q. - What condition does Liza have? What could be the reason for her inability to
sleep? Explain how Melatonin works. What methods or techniques could you advise in
order for her to get a good night sleep?

6. Nathan is currently washing the dishes when suddenly someone shouted “sunog!, sunog!,
tulong mga kapitbahay!, tulong!”. He looked outside the window and saw that the fire is
nearing towards their house. Just like anybody else, Nathan immediately carried the
refrigerator along with other household items, and placed it outside of their house. When the
fire was put out, Nathan has only one problem in his mind, how can he carry/put back the
refrigerator that is larger than him?

H. Q. - What kind of response does Nathan experienced during the said emergency
situation? How did he coped - up to the situation? Give the following benefit of the said
response.
