Why allowing participants to choose multiple option lead to an incorrect assumption of results:

Below is a simple example of the problem seen in the community survey. In this example, the following
question was asked:

Do you like chocolate?

A) I like white chocolate


B) I like milk chocolate
C) I like dark chocolate
D) I don’t like chocolate

Similar to several questions in the community survey, 3 of the options are positive and 1 is negative.
Below is a chart of 10 responses in this example:

Below is a pie chart that has been created using the Total Responses line:

The raw data above shows that 5 out of 10 respondents like chocolate, or 50%. However, if you used
the pie chart and add all 3 sections that indicate a liking for chocolate, you would assume that 75% of
respondents like chocolate.

In conclusion, the total responses does not accurately reflect the views of the respondents.
