Alverneq Lindsay Bio

I grew up in Brooklyn, New York and began attending performing arts programs in middle
school. Storytelling through theater was always my preferred artistic outlet and knowing this, my
mother introduced me to the New 42nd Street Youth Corps programs during my junior year at
Frank Sinatra High School of the Arts. At 16 I began working as a summer apprentice at The
New Victory Theater with the operations department. I was introduced to the myriad of
departments that worked together to present art that I admired. Working closely with the
company manager, I gained insight into the work that goes into bringing companies to The New
Victory, many of whom would be performing in New York for the first time. Here I developed an
admiration for the work The New Victory does to create a community both in and out of the
theater.

At the end of the apprenticeship the front of house staff invited me to apply to the New Victory
Usher Corps. The years I spent as an Usher had a huge impact on my professional career.
Learning how to interview, write cover letters and resumes, and manage others prepared me to
navigate the workplace after leaving the program at 19. At 21 I began an internship at McCann
New York, an advertising agency while in my final year at Hunter College as a media studies
major. I was offered a full-time job by the end of the internship. Skills I began honing while at
The New Victory were put into use everyday once I transitioned into my new role as a full-time
employee. Within a year I was promoted at McCann and despite feeling confidence in my role at
McCann I needed to return to the arts. The arts had been what grounded me at every stage in
my life but I was not sure how to re-enter the field. I spent a lot of time looking at job
descriptions for theater administration roles that I did not qualify for due to my limited experience
in the admin side of this field.

In 2017 Anthony Pound, Assistant Director of Youth Corps Programs reached out to the alumni
of the Usher Corps to announce the launch of the New 42nd Street Fellowship program. Since
returning as a Fellow for the Artistic Programming department, I have been able to use my skill
set in performing arts, research, and writing to feel like a valued member of the nonprofit.
Throughout the year I have attended conferences in Philadelphia and NYC that focused on
creating and developing work for young people. The fellowship has been a rewarding
experience in allowing me to gain valuable experience in theater administration. As I come to
the end of the Fellowship I see an opportunity for further growth within the New 42nd St. I plan
to continue pursuing a career in the arts and the Fellowship has presented me with
opportunities to combine my passion for acting and devising, along with cultivating work for
young audiences. After expressing interest in Teaching Artistry, the education team allowed me
to attend one of their curriculum activations. I have since begun working on a short-term project
with the Hook & Eye ensemble at the Professional Performing Arts High School in their
playwriting workshop. As an artist and lover of theater I understand my path may not be linear,
but the New 42 has continued to support and ground me as I find my niche within theater for
young audiences.
