evoked responses of shock and dismay when
they voted to withhold from the county’s libraries
the funding allocated to them in the 2019 budget.
Beth-Anna Van Dellen, a high school teacher
and a mother of three young children, who lives
with her family south of Standard, started an on-
line petition at change.org, urging Wheatland
council to change their decision.
“Have you watched the videotape of the way
this was decided?” asked Van Dellen. “That prob-
ably bothers me as much as the fact that they cut
the funding in the first place. It was very noncha-
lant, hardly a four-minute discussion, and some-
one on that council actually said that it was a
‘good day’ because of all the money they were
saving. Unbelievable.”
According to Wheatland County Councillor
Ben Armstrong, “things aren’t as rosy out there as
people think they are. Executive was tasked with
the job of finding a reduction of $600,000 in the
budget.” Armstrong admitted he has never used
the library services in the county. “I go more by
what the members bring back from the (library)
committee board and make my decision on that.”
Councillor for Division 7, Armstrong said local
residents hadn’t contacted him about the issue. “I
have not received one call (about this vote) out
in this area. That’s why it’s on the back burner
for me.”
County Reeve Amber Link, councillor for Divi-
sion 2, said she represents Wheatland County on
the Marigold Library System board, the govern-
ing board for libraries in Carseland and Gleichen.
Libraries in Hussar, Rockyford, Standard and
Strathmore have their own library boards.
“I support the decision of council,” Link said
in a prepared statement. “However, I will note I
personally voted in favour of continued financial
support for the libraries serving Wheatland Coun-
ty.”

Mother’s Day at Aspen Crossing
Aspen Crossing held their 15th annual Mother’s Day event on May 11-12
with flower specials on hanging baskets.

For the first time in Strathmore,
a cardboard boat race was held at
the Strathmore Aquatic Centre with
16 teams from Wheatland Crossing
School, George Freeman School and
Strathmore High School.
On May 6, 64 students took to the
water with their boats made from card-
board, tape and a surprise beach ball.
About half of the teams managed to
paddle their way across the pool while
the other half sank.
“I think it was successful because it
was a great day watching and listening
to students engage with the task from
a variety of perspectives,” said Mark
McKeen, teacher at Wheatland Cross-
ing School who organized the event.
McKeen modelled the event on similar
guidelines as the annual Skills Canada
cardboard boat race competition that
many of the teams had competed in
before.
A few benefits of holding the compe-
tition locally is the fact that Strathmore
has the facilities to hold events such as
these, students can participate in front
of family and friends, and participants
and parents did not need to travel far.
Participating students were all smiles
during the competition, even if their
boat didn’t make it across the pool.
Many of them are already planning
for next year having had new ideas
sparked of how to make things better.
“I think we should have done a little
bit more reinforcing and our design
wasn’t quite thought out before we
started building it; so we made a lot
of revisions (and) a lot of cuts where
we shouldn’t have,” said Erin Slemko,
a Grade 11 student from Wheatland
Crossing School.

Crafters Market on May 11 featuring many local home businesses and a few

ticipants took chances with their boat
design – even if they didn’t always
work out.
“Sometimes I can see right away
that they are going to run into some
problems trying to get across the pool,
but also understand the value in let-
ting them make some mistakes in the
process,” said Mckeen. He added that
he is already planning on hosting the
event again next year with the hopes
of including sponsorship opportuni-
ties, a free lunch and T-shirts for par-
ticipants, and adding some creative
and thematic elements to the competi-
tion.
This year’s event offered opportuni-
ties for students to get involved in a
project where they learned the benefit
of teamwork and collaboration, build-
ing something themselves, applying
mathematics and physics principles
to a tangible project, to think critically
and to build confidence.

Happy belated Mother’s Day to all of our moth-
ers, and those who we have maternal bonds with.
I was out on the pathways on Sunday playing with
my niece and nephew along with my beautiful
sons at the dog park, and I felt so blessed to be
surrounded by my family enjoying the sun after
the rainstorm. I want to send my deep love to those
who have lost their moms, and those who have lost
their children as well. We sometimes forget that the
days that are designated to honour those we love
come with mixed emotions, memories and loss. My
heart goes out to the family of Jasmine Lovett and
her little girl Aliyah who went missing on April 23.
Their bodies were recovered two weeks later. It
makes me squeeze my family tighter than usual.
I would like to chat about the upcoming federal
election. Gwyn Morgan’s May 10 Financial Post sto-
ry, “A principled Conservative policy would chal-
lenge Trudeau’s climate propaganda with truth,” is
an article worth reading as it delves into the kinds
of issues we will see as we head into the elec-
tion cycle. I was shocked to read that the average
middle-class family is paying an extra $840 dol-
lars per year to keep up with the overspending of
the federal Liberals. Eighty per cent of the middle
class is feeling this pinch. What is most interesting
about this article is the suggestion that this elec-
tion ballot question may be about climate change,
and the justification for the carbon tax that several
Premiers, including our own, do not support. We
have a responsibility to do better and continue to
be a leader in the most responsible resource devel-
opers in the world, but we need to take an honest
look at the subsidizing of “green” power and the
cost to Albertans, and Canadians. Windmills and
solar panels have major pollution footprints, from
creation to maintenance to the landfill. The wind
does not always blow and the sun does not always
shine, so this energy is intermittent at best. What
really strikes a chord here in our beautiful province
is how our resources and our prosperity can be
held hostage by this current federal government. If
this level of disrespect was extended to one of the
provinces out east, it would be a national crisis. We
must stop apologizing for our amazing resources
and our development of those resources.
Speaking of resources, we have a potential cano-
la crisis given the lack of leadership with respect to
China, India is still limiting access to its markets for
our pulse crops and our exports of durum wheat
to Italy have collapsed. It adds to a long list of
the issues the Prime Minister will be facing during
the election, including the SNC-Lavalin scandal, the
groping scandal (evidently she experienced it dif-
ferently than he did), the attack on our veterans,
the lack of work on missing and murdered Indig-
enous women, and reconciliation period, the attack
on our resources, the inability to build pipelines,
and my personal favourite, that he is a feminist…
ugh! We can get a good idea of our Prime Min-
ister’s priorities by observing that his government

This month is Ramadan and many of our Muslim
brothers and sisters are commemorating the reveal-
ing of the Koran to prophet Muhammed through
prayer and charity. It is a month of fasting, prac-
ticing self-discipline, spiritual reflection, devotion
and worship. Eid al Fitr is a festival when Muslims
break their fast for the last time during Ramadan,
but every night during the fast, when the sun sets,
families gather to break their fast with the Iftar
dinner. The Al-Madinah Calgary Islamic Assembly
would like to invite everyone to come and join in
an interfaith Iftar dinner at the Chestermere MPP
room on Sunday May 19. Please feel free to con-

also sees the celebration of Vaisakhi. Hindus and
Sikhs celebrate this along with the spring harvest.
This is a religious festival for the Sikh community
that commemorates the formation of the Khalsa
Panth warriors under the Guru Gobind Singh in
1699. This year thousands gathered to celebrate
and marched (the Nagar Kirtan) through the streets
of northeast Calgary singing songs and hymns.
I was honoured to present the award for com-
munity involvement at the Esquao awards. The
Esquao Awards is the largest gathering to honour
Aboriginal women in Canada. It is unique because
the community nominates the women, and the In-
stitute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women
(IAAW) coordinates the ceremony to honour them.
I was also so honoured to attend the Lions Founda-
tion of Canada fundraiser at John Peake Park this
past week to raise money for guide dogs. Steve and
Marilynn King along with the Lions were able to
raise $20,000. Congratulations!
I attended the AARC (Alberta Adolescent Recov-
ery Centre) gala that raises awareness around youth
addiction. Thank you to the amazing volunteers
and to Dr. and Mrs. Vause who are the founders
and creators of this incredible program that saves
lives and puts families back together. Dr. Vause
calls addiction “the equal opportunity destroyer.” It
can happen to anyone.
Finally, congratulations to the Highlands Golf
Course in Edmonton. It was built on a coal mine
and is celebrating its 90th anniversary.
Also, I hope you had a chance to catch the Rap-
tors game. It was a nail biter down to the final shot
in the seventh game. Kawhi Leonard’s incredible
jumpshot from the corner at the buzzer gave the
Raptors a 92-90 win over the Philadelphia 76ers
and they advance to the Eastern Conference Finals
for just the second time in franchise history.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~ Ted and Jo Currie

Ted Currie was born in Nelson, B.C. and completed most
of his education in Calgary up to Grade 11. At age 17, he
joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corp. at Camp Bor-
den, Ont. where he spent the next 18 months training. On
his return to Calgary, he worked in the emer-
gency department at the old Calgary General
Hospital, and became an ambulance driver.
At that time, there were four different ambu-
lance companies in Calgary, and each month,
whichever company had the City of Calgary
police contract, this was the one the drivers
worked for.
In 1970, the city decided to amalgamate all
the ambulance contracts to form a paramedic
service attached to the Calgary Fire Depart-
ment. All existing ambulance drivers were
grandfathered into the new organization. Ev-
ery one of them were sent to SAIT, where Ted
graduated with honours from the registered paramedical care
course. To this day, Calgary is recognized as having created
the first ever paramedical service in Canada.
In 1969, Ted married Donna Ellingson who worked with
him at Calgary General Hospital, and they had two children
- Kevin and Jodi.
During his tenure as an ambulance driver, Ted delivered 13
babies in the back of the ambulance, but his daughter Jodi
had hers at home, assisted by Ted, who then arranged for a
coworker driver to take her to the Calgary General in his am-
bulance. Ted and Donna divorced in the early 1980s.
Ted left the ambulance service in 1976 to join an oil and
gas company as their chief medical officer on an offshore

used his days off to drive tour buses. He remembers one
particular trip, when he took a busload of Down syndrome
children from Kamloops to Disneyland in 1978 – the first trip
of this nature ever to cross the border.
In 1979, following the end of his contract on the oil rig, he
joined Alberta Gas Trunk Line (which became NOVA, which
merged with TransCanada Pipelines which, in
turn, changed its name to TC Energy as of
May 3, 2019) as a health and safety supervi-
sor, and spent the next 15 years there. Dur-
ing this time, he met Jo Richardson who was
born in High River, and they were married
in Calgary in 1982. After leaving NOVA, Ted
formed his own consulting company which
required him to travel to different parts of the
world, and on a China trip in 2002, Jo went
with him. After leaving school, Jo attended
Mount Royal College, and took a course on
early childhood services. Her lifelong dream
had been to own her own daycare. But af-
ter their marriage, Ted needed her to run his office, so with
much regret she left her daycare and became an office admin-
istrator at Ted Currie and Associates Ltd.
Following the work in China, they returned to Calgary,
where Ted continued to work in the oil patch before join-
ing the Alberta government’s occupational health and safety
department as an OH&S officer, team leader and technical

SHS international students gain opportunities

Far away from one’s own home coun-

try, not every other country provides
opportunities for students to study in a
high school with enhanced facilities of
accommodation like that of dormitories
and homestays.
It has been a great opportunity for
me to accomplish when it comes to
studying abroad as I have learned how
to nurture myself independently, all
alone, away from home and parents.
Studying abroad is a dream for many
students, and to pursue this desire, one
has to work really hard.
Landing in Canada from the United
Arab Emirates (UAE) as an Indian, this
opportunity to study at Golden Hills
School Division has given me a lot of
knowledge about things and about the
country itself. In the beginning it was re-
ally difficult for me to deal with the sur-
roundings and people around me, but I
gradually adapted to it. The variant ac-
cent in Canada has been a challenge for
me and there were times when I would
not even understand what my teachers
taught me. After getting to know peo-
ple and making a few friends, my ac-
cent began to get engaged with theirs
and today I rarely face this problem.
Culture shock, as observed by many
internationals, was faced by me as well.
There were certain traditions and hab-
its I happened to experience while in
Canada which I was not used to earlier.
Talking about culture, I am yet glad to
have known about a variety of cultures,
languages, ethics, habits and foods, liv-
ing among students from various parts
of the world.
Dealing with a cuisine entirely differ-
ent to mine has been a major problem
for me while in Canada, despite the
fact I have adapted to that as well by
now. Canadian food gave me a chance
to discover the diet and spices used by
the locals and how different it is from

The Alberta Ministry of Advanced Education is inviting eligible organizations to apply a two-year probationary
Community Adult Learning Program grant funding. Eligible organizations interested in serving foundational learn-
ers in Wheatland County may apply.

The Community Adult Learning Program (CALP) provides funding and other supports to over 100 community-
based organizations to facilitate part-time, primarily non-formal, adult learning opportunities in communities
across Alberta.

Eligible organizations that have an interest in working towards the program’s vision are invited to apply for Com-
munity Adult Learning Program grant funding on a probationary period. The deadline for Applications is June
3, 2019, and details on how to apply can be found on the Alberta Government website.

One young Wheatland Crossing stu-

dent’s literary talents helped her to re-
ceive the highest award possible in the
2019 Royal Canadian Legion Remem-
brance Contest in the junior poetry divi-
sion. Twelve-year-old Avery Koole wrote
both the poem and an essay about Re-
membrance Day for a class assignment
last year. The result, a 20-line free verse
poem titled “Just Remember” captures
how Koole feels about and what she
thinks about Remembrance Day.
The poem ended up sweeping the na-
tion to win her first place in the junior
poetry division at the district level, first
in provincials out of over 178 regions,
and finally first out of over 1,000 dis-
tricts competing at the national level.
Koole, who is in Grade 6 and loves to
write stories has not much experience
at trying to write poems, is thrilled at
the result.
“I wrote it on how I felt about Re-
membrance Day and I struggled at first
but then when I asked my teacher (Mrs.
Moczulski) she just said to write it on
how I feel so I wrote it on that,” said
Koole, adding that she had no idea that
her poem had advanced through the

Energy District bylaw draws sparks from landowners and industry

Wheatland County council had to bal-
ance decisions on protecting agricul-
tural land with demands for developing
commercial and industrial properties
that bring economic opportunity to the
county.
“Landowner rights are always a top
priority for me, so I do think this has
to be a consideration for me when we
are looking at this draft bylaw; however,
we have a responsibility of mitigating
the effects of those individual decisions
on adjacent landowners and … and we
also have to manage the cumulative ef-
fects that have broader consequences
for agriculture, regarding in particular
fragmentation,” said Wheatland County
Reeve Amber Link.
She said the South Saskatchewan Re-
gional Plan and Wheatland County’s
Municipal Development Plan suggest a
cumulative management approach to
balance economic development oppor-
tunities with cultural and environmental
concerns.
The public hearing, held on May 7,
had a strong turnout from developers
and energy companies. Landowners had
submitted objections and one landowner
presented his concerns.
Several industry stakeholders asked
council to postpone the public hearing
to gain more feedback from landowners
and address ramifications produced by
the new bylaw.
Councillors Glen Koester and Ben
Armstrong indicated a greater landown-
er turnout would occur if the hearing
were postponed, as it is currently seed-
ing time for many farmers. Several of the
newer elected councillors disagreed with
postponing the hearing.
“If it’s important enough to these land-
owners, they would be here,” said Coun-
cillor Tom Ikert.
Link stated she understood the im-
portance of farmers getting their crops
planted; however, she said if council cen-
tred their council meeting on agriculture
practices, they may never get business
completed, as agriculture has demands
all year long. A council majority decided
not to postpone the public hearing.
Landowner Rod Vergouwen, whose
family has farmed in Wheatland County
for 125 years, presented his concerns
about the bylaw to council.
“I really think it is important that we
look after our farmland going in here.
Farmers and ranchers are stewards of the
land, and production of these crops and
grasslands produce huge public interest
benefits,” said Vergouwen.
He outlined protection of wetlands,
wildlife, endangered species and positive
climate change factors are what agricul-
tural lands bring to the table. He said he
was concerned about costs for decom-
missioned facilities falling into the land-
owners’ and the county laps. He said the
loss of natural spaces and visual pollu-
tion alters residents’ enjoyment of county
vistas. In the draft bylaw, once a property
is designated under the Energy District,
no new residential projects can be built
on that parcel. Comments at the public
hearing indicated this reduced choices
for farmers on their properties.
County landowner Darcy Morgan
wanted more information on the dis-
cretionary uses within the bylaw and
asked about the development authority
decision processes. Two other landown-
ers commented they appreciated greater
restrictions on these developments, and
another agreed they should not be al-
lowed to build on agriculture properties.
Markus Lehmann, founder and presi-
dent of Navigatio Capital, gave a his-
torical summary of alternative energy
development and upcoming trends for
renewable energy projects. He said 85
per cent of Canada’s energy production
will be through renewable projects and
there is significant expansion worldwide.
Meanwhile, East Strathmore Solar Proj-
ect had previously made application for
a solar facility within Wheatland County.
They are holding an open house on the
proposed project at Crowfoot Commu-
nity Hall on April 5, from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
According to Kolja Vainstein, project
manager with East Strathmore Solar Proj-
ect, the new bylaw changed the ground
rules and they have already spent thou-
sands of dollars on the proposed proj-
ect. He said he wondered if existing
applications could be grandfathered in
under the previous application require-
ments, and that the company is willing to
work with the county on revisions to the
bylaw. He addressed fears the facilities
would eat up farmland, explaining they
have to be close to power generation sta-
tions, so a limited amount of properties
will be suitable for the projects.
Evan Wilson, prairies regional director
with the Canadian Wind Energy Associa-
tion, also had concerns. He said the draft
bylaw sends a message that Wheatland
County is closed for business and the re-
sult will be loss of jobs and tax revenue.
He noted these facilities bring employ-
ment opportunities and they have the
potential to generate millions of dollars
in tax revenue that could pay for services
normally paid by county residents. Farm-
ers benefit through the lease contracts
which include freedom for farmers to use
areas not used by the energy infrastruc-
ture. Many of the county guidelines are
already covered under the various pro-
vincial regulatory requirements.
“There is a lot that is being done by
the province, and anything being done
additionally here in the municipality
should be consistent with that or refer to
the rules already brought in by the prov-
ince,” said Wilson.
County staff were asked how they
came up with bylaw requirements and
they said they looked at provincial re-
quirements and incorporated some of
the input council gave them in the past.
Councillor Jason Wilson indicated coun-
cil had looked at the issue three times
and gave direction to staff for developing
a bylaw.
Koester said some of the setbacks
were excessive and suggested they be
changed to be consistent with the other
county development bylaws. He said a
better setback for wind towers would be
75 feet (ft.) plus the height plus 10 per
cent of the tower being installed. He also
asked that the 8 ft. fencing requirement
be removed, as it didn’t really provide
additional safety features and it was an
impediment to farming practises.
There was some disagreement and con-
fusion regarding where measurements
should start for distance from hamlets,
residences and adjacent landowner resi-
dences. In discussion, the buyer beware
policy was emphasized.
“The landowner has freedom as to
what happens on their land, but they
also have the responsibility to protect
themselves,” said Koester.
Armstrong noted if the bylaw is too
restrictive, the province may step in and
take approval away from municipalities,
as it did in the oil and gas sector.
Koester said there wasn’t a need for so
many specifics in this bylaw, as restric-
tions could be put in place when the in-
dividual parcel applications come in for
approval and appear before council for
acceptance. The public hearings on those
will allow adjacent owners to give input
at that time as well.
“That’s why I like the public aspect so
much. It gives individual control to in-
dividual property owners’ site specific,”
said Koester. “The re-designation gives a
voice to the people that own the proper-
ty adjacent, and they can come in to par-
ticipate in the public hearing process.”
Koester’s original request for amend-
ments was overruled by council majority
vote. Further discussion provided other
amendments. Staff wanted to know if en-
ergy facilities should be subdivided out
of land parcels; however, Armstrong indi-
cated if those were subdivided, building
opportunities or other uses would be lost
and it could affect landowners’ use of the
land for extended periods. Alternatively,
subdividing each wind tower out was un-
realistic.
“I don’t think that’s reasonable either.
We are missing something here,” said
Armstrong. He also questioned why there
was a rush on the bylaw acceptance, and
why council members wanted the bylaw
pushed through without seeing it revised
in writing.
Staff revised the bylaw by the end of
business on May 7, and gave a verbal
report on changes made. Adjustments
were made to some of the setbacks and
the provision of spot zoning, or special
considerations was included to deal with
complicated sections under the bylaw.
Second and third readings including
the final amendments were accepted by
majority vote, with Koester and Arm-
strong opposed. The bylaw will be post-
ed on the Wheatland County website.

The Strathmore Venom junior B lacrosse team is hoping to
build off a difficult start to the new season.
Despite going winless to start the campaign, the team is
looking for a solid second half of the season to get their game
back on track.
The Venom had a tough weekend, losing a pair of games,
including a 20-4 loss to the Red Deer Renegades on May 12 at
the Strathmore Family Centre.
Riley Gallant scored three times and Quaid Burkholder add-
ed a goal and two assists to lead the way for the Venom.
The team will now hit the road for four games, including a
game on May 15 against the Axemen (result not available as
of press time). The Venom will face the Sabrecats on May 22,
the Wranglers on May 29 and the Rage on June 3 to close out
the road trip.
Their next home game is June 5 (7 p.m.) when they host
the Axeman.

New playground fundraiser

Parents, staff and students of the new
George Freeman School, which opened
in September 2018, are fundraising to
build a school playground.
The K-9 school has 224 students cur-
rently enrolled, and 315 students are
already enrolled for the 2019-20 school
year. But all those children have only an
empty field to play on.
The school plans to install a play-
ground this summer, said school par-
ent Kristen Wilson, representative of the
playground fundraising committee. But
the project will cost nearly $500,000.
Funding of $280,000 has already been
obtained through a government grant,
committed sponsors and earlier fun-
draisers. That means almost $220,000
more is needed, and the committee is
planning two more fundraisers before
the end of this school year.
On June 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.,
they’re hosting a Falcons Paintball event
at the Strathmore Delta Force Field. The
$35 admission includes safety equip-
ment and 100 paintballs, and allows
play for all or any part of the day. All
participants eight years and older (in ac-
cordance with provincial paintball laws)
are welcome.
Due to a generous donation from
Delta Force, Wilson said, the commit-
tee hopes for ticket proceeds of $5,000.
They also plan a 50/50 raffle draw and
a raffle of donated items at the paintball
event.
Paintball tickets can be purchased on-
line at Eventbrite or at the school office.

also be selling tickets, with a community
blitz from May 13 to 24.

Young golfer Rory Wutzke received an
opportunity most 15 year olds only dream
of. Rory had the chance to meet hockey
celebrities and a rock singer in Mesa.
Rory is the son of the late Gordon Wutzke
and the grandson of Fred and Maria
Wutzke of Strathmore.
Rory was invited to play in the Phoenix
Coyotes Alumni Tournament in Mesa on
April 8th. Good Friends of Rory’s mom;
Laura and Ian Warrack invited Kathy and
Rory down for a visit and Ian had plans
for Rory.
“Ian heard I was getting good at golf
and decided to invite me to play in the
tournament with him and another friend
of his that was visiting (Kevin Wilson).
We also got to play with Charlie Belgian,
a PGA tour player” said an excited Rory.
In the tournament on April 8th Rory got
to meet some famous celebrities such as
rocker Alice Cooper, hockey players such
as Shane Doan, Lanny Mcdonald, Marty
McSorley, Colin Patterson, Gary Roberts
and Curtis Joseph – just to name a few.
Rory said “it was unreal to meet the
celebrities and the retired NHL players,
I’ve played hockey for six years, so it was
great to meet some of the players that
you only ever heard about. They were so
nice and took the time to talk to me”
While in Phoenix, Warrack arranged
a VIP custom fitting for Rory at the Ping
Factory to prepare Rory for this upcoming
season. Rory also purchased some new
clubs while he was there. Rory said “the

After current fundraising efforts con-
clude in June, the installation of the
playground will begin in July. The com-
mittee plans to accomplish as much as
possible, according to funds raised, be-
fore the 2019-20 school year begins. If a
funding shortfall prevents building the
complete structure, they have a plan to
complete the playground in phases.
“Our students have been so adaptive
and creative in their outdoor playtime,”
Wilson said. “We do not want to have to
make them wait longer to get playing on
the new structure.
“Every school and every community
centre needs a playground,” she added.
“Our goal is to enhance the outside of
this facility to include a playground, out-
door classroom/picnic area, community
garden and parkour course, with the
aim of including citizens of all ages and
abilities. The playground will not only
be used by George Freeman School stu-
dents, but also by users of the Sports
Centre, and Strathmore and Wheatland
County residents.”

retirement, Mom was very involved in playing bridge
and it was her passion right to the end. She enjoyed Always
camping at Eagle Lake Park, where she met some
genuinely beautiful people who became her dear
here with
friends. She always enjoyed a good campfire and us
specialized in cooking bacon and eggs. Florice is sur-
vived by her children, Elaine (Lorne) Mullen, Yvonne
(Bob) Hartell, Leonard (Sandra) Desmet, Joanne (Ted) Love
Brown, and Leona Desmet. Florice had 16 grandchil- always,
dren and 37 great grandchildren. She also leaves
behind a brother Gordon Warner and a sister-in-law
Ian, Emily
Shirley Warner and many nieces and nephews. Mom & Daryl
was predeceased by her husband Albert in 1978, son
Robert Desmet in 1990, granddaughter Lisa Har-
tell Macdonald in 2017, Hamish Macdonald, Lisa’s Dylan Bradley Penna
