CHARACTERISTICSADVANTAGES

Metal segregated switchboard structure

Stainless steel housing of switch disconnector provides earthed
metallic segregation between main busbar section and incoming/
Main busbar section
outgoing section. This characteristics ensures maximum personnel
safety during any intervention in the feeder compartment, such
as replacement of one or more fuses or cable maintenance, even
with the main busbars energised.
Furthermore, metal segregation cancels any possibility of surface
leakage currents, which is the case when non-metallic segregation
is used. provided by the housing considerably reduces the possibility Metal segregation
of a shortcircuit between the upper and lower contacts of the
same phase due to leakage currents. Isolating
section

In M36 Series switchboards, high voltage current path is separated

into 3 sections. They are as follows:

Main busbar section: section of main busbars, which in general

is energized.

Isolating section: section dividing main busbar section and

incoming/outgoing section, where switch disconnector is installed.

Incoming/outgoing section: depending on unit type this section

contains circuit breaker, current and voltage transformers, earthing Incoming/outgoing section
switch, MV fuses, voltage divider insulators and cable connection
flags, etc.

According to IEC 62271-200

Loss of service continuity category: LSC2A
Partition class: PM

Observable isolating distance

Contact positions of the switch disconnectors (closed, open,
earthed) can be easily seen by observation window in front of
switch disconnector. The strength of this window has been proven
during internal arc test inside the switch disconnector.

Internal arc tested switch disconnector

Switch disconnector having stainless steel housing has been tested
acording to internal arc test prosedure for 16 kA, 1s and passed
the test. Thanks to these tests, personnel safety is ensured in case
of internal arc faults that may occur within switch disconnector.

3
Easy to perceive front panel
In M36 Series front panel is simplified in order to assure the
personnel to perceive the switchboards status and make operations
easily.

Fully mechanical interlock

Interlocks that exist between unit door and circuit breaker, switch
disconnector, earthing switch are completely mechanical.

Switch disconnector instead of disconnector

Open position Closed position Earthed position
In M36 Series switchboards E3 class three position switch
disconnector with short circuit making capability of 5 times is
used instead of ordinary switch disconector. By means of this,
hazards that may occur due to wrong operation of personnel
are hindered from the beginning.

Three position switch disconnector

Switch disconnectors that are used in cubicles are three position
(closed, open, earthed) type and so, wrong operation of the
personnel is hindered. Using single exciting shaft possibility of
switch disconnector to be simultaneously in both earthed and
load positions is removed.

AGO YGC Reduced unit dimensions

Width of incoming/outgoing unit with switch disconnector and
current and voltage measurement units are reduced. YGC cubicle
is 60 cm and AGO is 100 cm wide. While reducing the dimensions
all standards are strictly followed and necessary tests and especially
dielectric tests are applied.

A B C C A B C B A Sequence interchangeability
Modular structure of M36 Series switchboards allows easy
interchangeability of unit sequence.

Easy plant earthing

In order to provide continuity of earthing circuits, cubicle earthing
bar connection can easily be done from the front side.

Interlocks
KBT KBH All interlocks In M36 Series switchboards are mechanical. Interlocks
that exist between cubicle door and circuit breaker, switch
disconnector, earthing switch are carried out by means of sliding
bars without using key-lock system. Logic of interlocks are given
in below table.

CALE CONNECTION UNIT CABLE CONNECTION

(WITH EARTHING SWITCH) UNIT On interlock sliding bars provisions for path locks are provided.
Furthermore, in cubicles having cable entry, in order to prevent
closing of the earthing switch while cable is energized, an interlock
named “live line interlock” can be used, upon request.

In KGC type units while door is opened and load break switch
is earthed, the earthing switch can be brought into open position.
Thus, cable testing is performed very easily and securely.

Wide internal space

Although cubical width has been reduced the design allows
ample space for cable connection or similar works.

Live line interlock

In cubicles containing cable connection and earthing switch,
special type of voltage indicator can be used.
When incoming cable is energized an auxiliary contact on this
voltage indicator is exciting an interlock coil, which prevents
closing of the earthing switch.

7
KGC
Easy to perceive front panel and interlocks
Cubicle front panel is simplified for easy perception, so operating
staff following the simplified instructions will be able to run start-
up and switching operations easily.
While start-up and switching operations are being performed,
interlocks among equipment are fully mechanical, fail-proof and
easy to understand. Here sliding interlocks are used instead of
key-lock mechanisms.

Field diffuser
In M36 Series cubicles field diffusers varying in size and structure
are used, which designs are proved by dielectric strength type
tests. Thanks to these metal diffusers, along with reducing the
cubicle size, possibilities of faults like partial discharge and surface
leakage

Protection with ring type (toroidal) current transformer

Digital protection relays with comparably low power consumption
provide sensitive adjustment (fault sensing). Along with these
relays use of toroidal transformers, which are not exposed to
direct effect of short circuit, minimizes possibilities of faults caused
by insulating material fatigue.

Wide observation window

In M36-CVM type cubicles, easy observation of instrument
transformers inside the cubicle is assured by means of wide
observation window, which strength is proved by internal arc
tests. Furthermore, main busbar section is also made observable
by means of window against possible phase short circuits performed
on the busbar section.

Sealing system
Current and voltage measurement cubicles are designed suitable
for a sealing operation by the distribution utility. Accordingly,
ability of LV compartment and cubicle front door to be sealed
is provided.

13
AGO
Wide internal space
Width of current and voltage measurement cubicles is reduced
to 1000mm by means of field diffuser technology without using
insulating material. In spite of reduced cubicle size, equipment
are settled effectively within the cubicle, in order to ease fuse
changing works.

Easy perceive front panel and interlocks

Cubicle front panel is simplified in order to ease perception.
Operating personnel following simplified instructions can easily

5 closed separation separation open
Main contact separation
1 No electric arc strikes as the current flows through the arcing contacts.
During its run downwards, the moving part compresses the gas contained in the lower chamber.
The compressed gas flows out of the lower chamber into the upper chamber, taking them both to
the same pressure.
8
Arcing contact separation
The current flows thanks to the electric arc which has struck between the arcing contacts.
The gas cannot get out through the nozzle because the hole is still closed by the fixed arcing
contact and cannot get out through the inside of the moving arcing contact either because the
electric arc closes this (clogging effect).
With low currents, when the current passes through natural zero and the arc is quenched,

the gas flows through the contacts. The low pressure reached cannot chop the current and the
modest amount of compressed gas is sufficient to restore dielectric resistance between the
two contacts, preventing restriking on the rising front of the return voltage.
With high short-circuit currents, the pressure wave generated by the electric arc closes the
9
valve between the two chambers so that the circuit-breaker starts to operate as a “pure selfblast”.
2
The pressure increases in the upper volume thanks to heating of the gas and molecular
disassociation due to the high temperature. The increase in pressure generated is proportional
to the arc current and ensures quenching on first passage through current zero.

Switch disconnectors having stainless steel housing are tested in
international laboratories to approve safety against internal arc

forwarded through the gas exhaust valve at back of switch
disconnector. Thus, personnel safety is ensured.

Observable isolating distance

Contact positions of the switch disconnectors (closed, open,
earthed) can be easily seen by observation window in front of
switch disconnector.

Operating using single excitation shaft

In TOI type switch disconnector single excitation shaft is used
and there are two slots for earth and load operations respectively.
2 7 6
Action on both slots simultaneously is prevented by means of a
sliding bar. In this manner wrong operation is prevented.

25
Arc quenching (extinguishing) principle
It is a well known characteristic of the arc that it attempts to wander
away from its point of origin. This physical phenomenon causes
increase of arc length and voltage drop on it. In order to restrict the
arc space and to prevent arc flashovers barriers are placed in the
switching gap to split the arc in serial parts.
The base or root of every arc experiences a voltage drop, which
Ub – Arc Voltage
appear as cathode or anode drop. By splitting arc in multiple parts
every anode and cathode voltage drop of each arc parts adds on
each other and increases total voltage drop. At the instant of current
zero arc is extinguished and can not restrike because of high arc
voltage. This quenching method by using “deionization plates” are
currently in common use.

High tightness
Inside switch disconnectors SF6 gas is used for arc quenching and
insulation. Routine tightness tests performed on every switch
disconnector assure existance of proper gas density at least
for a time period of 20 years.

Position indicator
Contact observation window
Open, closed and earthed positions of the switch disconnector
are shown by position indicator connected to the main shaft.
In a similar manner, auxiliary contacts are also connected to
and switched from the main shaft. This ensures reliability of
indicators.
Closed position
Three position safe switching
TOI type switch disconnectors are three positioned (open,
closed, earthed) and simultaneous operation of closed and
earthed positions is prevented by means of only one excitation
shaft.

Open position
Easy operation
Front panel is simple and easy to understand and operations
can be performed easily.

Interlocks
Although the switch disconnector contain one shaft, there
are two slots for excitation of earthing and load switching:
- Simultaneous operation on both slots is prevented by means
Earthed position of a sliding bar.
- The bar can not be shifted into other position unless switch
disconnector is not in open position. In such a way, direct
switching from closed to earthed position is prevented and
vice versa.

Operating mechanisms
There are two type of mechanisms used for operating TOI type
switch disconnectors in M36 Series metal enclosed switchboards.

M1 type mechanism
This type of mechanism called “Snap-action mechanism”, also
referred to as toggle-spring mechanism. With this type of operating
mechanism, a spring is tensioned and released shortly before the
operating angle is completed and its released force actuates main
contact system. This is used for both closing and opening.

M2 type mechanism
This type of mechanism which is called “Stored-energy mechanism”
has one spring for closing and a second spring for opening.
During the closing operation, the opening spring is simultaneously
tensioned and latched. The stored energy for the operating
operation is released by magnetic trips or the striker pin of the
HV fuse.

Motor excitation mechanism

Switch disconnector mechanisms can be fitted with motor
mechanisms for both earthed and load positons upon request.
- Motors used in M1 and M2 mechanisms are feeded from
present auxiliary DC supply. Start and stop switches are selected
so as to provide switching of high DC currents of motors.
- In case of possible fault that may occur in switches, position
shifting etc. Burning out of the motor is prevented.
Remote control of motor excitation is prevented while manual
operations are performed on the mechanism.
This operation is provided mechanicaly by means of putting
lever into the slot and putting the motor excitation
mechanism out of use.

Over current protection relays

In medium voltage distribution systems, overcurrent relays are
used throughout the power system to detect intolerable or
unwanted conditions within an assigned area. They are, in effect,
a form of active insurance designed to maintain a high degree
of service contiunity and limit equipment damage. They meet
IEC 60255-1 Standard and also TEDAS MYD/096.27 technical
specification and have following properties.

Sensitive protection against the phase and earth faults

Time delayed and instantaneous overcurrent protection functions
Selectable definite time and inverse time characteristics
conforming to IEC and ANSI standards
 Trip circuit supervision
 Autoreclose function
 Cold load pick-up capability
 Alarm for internal failure
Programmable digital inputs and outputs, trip, alarm, time relays
RS-232 port (or an optical port) on the front side for servicing
Communicate on the RS-485 port using IEC 60870-5-103
protocol
Fault recording capability of last 20 faults with 1 msec time tag
Non-volatile memory for program arrangement and settings
Fault current counter for circuit breaker maintenance

Instrument transformers
Current and voltage transformers are resin-insulated and suitable
for feeding of measuring instruments and protections. Instrument
transformers comply with IEC 60044-1 and 60044-2 Standards.
For protection function toroidal current transformer are also used
in M36 Series metal enclosed switchboards. Their performances
and precision class comply with the apparatus requirements.

Voltage indicating system

In M36 Series modular switchboards voltage indicating system
connected to voltage divider insulators are used to check the
presence of operating voltage. This voltage indicating system
conforms to IEC 61243-5 standard. According to this standard
if phase to earth voltage in three phase systems:
- is smaller than 10% of the nominal operating voltage,
then indicator should not be lighted on
- Is between 10% - 45% of the nominal operating voltage,
then indicator should blink
