Performance Evaluation

I participated in the chorus concert titled “Our World, Our time, Our song.” This took

place on May 16th, 2019. Heritage and Wakefield high schools got together to perform and

create beautiful music. This was the last chorus concert for this semester and for some, the last

one they will ever do. Emotions were a big part of this performance because of this and it poured

through ever performance done. The concert as a whole was done very well and brought tears to

many people’s eyes.

All the songs of the concert were really strong, but there was one that shined out above

all. The strongest song of the night was definitely “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” words and

music by Paul Simon and arranged by Kirby Shaw. This was the most up-beat song we sang all

together and very clear everyone really got into it. The dynamics of the piece were performed

perfectly as well as the blended harmony that took this song to the next level. Having said that

this was performed by a high school choir, I feel as though it sounded very professional.

There was some songs that needed a little more attention and were on the more weaker

side. The weakest song was “A Legacy of a Life,” with text and music by Greg Gilpin. This

piece was performed by Heritage Singers. Although I really enjoyed the song itself, it could have

been performed much better. I could only hear Courtney’s voice the whole time. As beautiful as

her voice may be, there was no blend between parts and sounded very choppy. It sounded like

there was only one soprano voice that did not mix with the other parts, but actually out sang

them. It sounded a little like it should have been a solo instead of a song performed by a chorus.

The one thing I mentioned earlier, but will mention again is the emotions that were put

into this concert. What I enjoyed most about this concert is how moving it was. Unison did an

outstanding job at doing this. They really conveyed the artists messages through each song that

was performed. An example of their strongest song was “Please Stay” with music and text by

Jake Runestad. This song arrose many emotions from the audience and the singers themselves.

The best addition to this song was the speaking parts in this song. Each singer stated a reason

why they wanted someone to “stay.” This made so many people really reflect and think about the

meaningful message of this song.

My mom was the only member of my family that attended this concert. She was very

impressed with how good a high school chorus could be. She said that “This is Me” performed

by Unison was the weakest song because it is such a hard song to master. She said the strongest

song was “Bridge over Troubled Water,” which I definitely agree with. After speaking to

multiple class mates, I had many people tell me they felt really good about this concert and said

they did their best.

Overall, this concert was by far a great success. This concert had beautiful music in the

beautiful Wakefield Barn. The singers that are graduating will be greatly missed. We set them

free and said our “farewells.” I am hoping the next concert will be filled with emotions and great

music, just like this year.
