Jason Belmonte Wins DHC PBA Japan Invitational
TOKYO, Japan – Australia’s
two-handed star, Jason
Belmonte, defeated top qualifi-

DHC PBA Japan Invitational at
Tokyo Port Bowl for his fourth
title of the 2019 Go Bowling!
PBA Tour season and the 22nd
of his career. Is efforts earned

With the win, the 35-year-old

10th place on the PBA all-time
titles list with PBA Hall of

Josie Barnes of Nashville,
Tennessee, captured the
Nationwide PWBA Greater
Cleveland Open title.
Barnes, who now owns three
career PWBA Tour titles, defeat-
ed Singapore’s Cherie Tan in a
thrilling finish at Yorktown
Lanes, 223-213, to claim the title
and $10,000 top prize.
The stepladder finals were
streamed live at BowlTV.com.
The title match came down to
the final frame with Tan leading PWBA Champion Josie Barnes
by a single pin. Barnes, finishing
the match first, delivered three strikes in the 10th
frame to force Tan to do the same to claim her second transition on the right lane after leaving the 3-6-9-10
career title.
Tan, a left-hander who was the top seed at the frames, respectively.

never won,” Belmonte said.
“Winning in front of the
Japanese crowd means a lot;
I’m very honored.
“Jakob bowled incredible all
week. I feel for the leaders,” he
continued. “It’s unfortunate to
dominate a tournament and then
lose it all in one game. It took
me fifteen years but I feel quite
certain Jakob will do it much
sooner than that.”

“I knew if I didn’t strike out, I
probably wasn’t going to win the
match,” said Barnes, a 30-year-
old right-hander. “I knew Cherie
was going to go up and make
some great shots, since she’s been
making them all week. I made
sure I stuck to my process, and
after I got the third strike I sat
down and told myself if it’s meant
to be, it’ll happen.
“As soon as she let it go, I knew
it was a great shot. As soon as I
saw the 9 pin stand, I just started

She was unable to convert the split in the fifth frame, letting Tan
move into the lead.
She made the correct adjustment to strike in the seventh frame
and delivered another strong shot in the ninth frame, leaving and
converting a 10 pin, to set the stage for the exciting finish.
“I thought I threw it a little slow in the third, so I made a small
move off it,” said Barnes, who is a seven-time Team USA member.
“I thought I threw it really well in the fifth and knew at about 30
feet it wasn’t going to hold. At that point, I had to make a gutsy
move to give myself a chance. After talking with my ball reps, we
decided to make a 3 and 2. Even though I left the 10 pin in the
ninth frame, I controlled the pocket and knew that was all I could
really do.”
Tan led each round this week and bested the field by more than
220 pins to earn the top seed. She started the title match using a
urethane bowling ball, but switched back to a ball with a reactive
coverstock in the sixth frame after three consecutive spares.
“Shannon (Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio) was using urethane, so I
thought I’d give mine a shot,” said Tan, who won the 2016 PWBA
Storm Sacramento Open. “It was reading really nicely, and my
reactive ball was struggling a little in the mids, so I decided to start
with urethane. I threw the first shot in the 10th really well, and
that’s the only thing you can do. I can only control how well I
throw it, and the rest is up to the pins, not me. But, it feels really
great to bowl well since I was struggling during the second half of
last year. I made some changes to my game, so I’m glad they’re
holding up.”
Barnes advanced to the title match after delivering in the 10th
frame against Singapore’s Jazreel Tan, 234-232.
Jazreel Tan finished the semifinal first, rolling three strikes to
force Barnes to fill 26 pins to win. Barnes delivered a double and
toppled seven pins on her fill ball to advance.

Team USA’s Sean Wilcox and AJ Johnson Break Record,
Win Doubles at 2019 PABCON Men’s Championships
LIMA, Peru - The Team USA bowling program is a
brotherhood of sorts, where one generation teaches
the next, and the players forever share a bond only
they can understand.
Five-time Team USA member AJ Johnson is taking
his leadership role this week at the 2019 Pan
American Bowling Confederation Men's
Championships very seriously, and he used a lead-by-
example approach on the way to the doubles gold
medal with Team USA rookie Sean Wilcox.
Paced by Johnson's near-record 1,551 six-game
block, the two shattered the PABCON
Championships doubles record by 145 pins, posting a
3,062 total at the new Bowling Center of La Villa
Deportiva Nacional (VIDENA).
Wilcox, a 20-year-old right-hander, was there every
strike of the way, and his 258 final game helped
secure the gold medal and their place in the record
book.
He contributed a 1,511 total to the memorable effort
that moved him and Johnson past hall of famers
Patrick Allen and Walter Ray Williams Jr., who pre-
viously held the record with 2,917, rolled at the 2011
PABCON Men's Championships in Guadalajara,
Mexico.
This year's silver medal went to Colombia's
Santiago Mejia (1,470) and Manuel Otalora (1,398)
with a 2,868 total, and Canada's Zachary Wilkins
(1,399) and Mitch Hupé (1,367) held on for the
bronze medal with 2,766.
"My whole outlook for this week, and anytime I
travel for Team USA, is to help get as many medals
for the team as possible," said Johnson, a 26-year-old
right-hander. "The whole day, I just felt really calm
and aware of everything, because I wanted to make
things as easy as possible for Sean to not get too
worked up. There's just something about team bowl-
ing. It's just different, and I truly enjoy helping a team
find success. To break a record is just unbelievable to
me. Just unbelievable."
The gold medalists started their block in a high-
scoring meeting with Peru's Aldo Gibu and Kenny
Kishimoto, both of whom started the opening game
with eight consecutive strikes. Gibu finished with
279, while Kishimoto shot 265. Johnson and Wilcox
had 278 and 244, respectively, and were able to main-
tain that pace throughout the block.
Johnson's performance included games of 278, 269,
269, 262, 269 and 204. He fell nine pins short of
matching the PABCON Championships six-game
record of 1,560, posted by Team USA's Bill O'Neill,
also at the 2011 event. With three strikes in his final
frame, Johnson would've finished with 1,561.
Johnson credits the guidance of players such as
Chris Barnes and Tommy Jones for his own under-
standing and appreciation for what it means to bowl
with USA on his back.

Barnes and Jones combined for nearly three
decades on Team USA but chose to retire after 2018.
The last gold medal they won together - in the team
event at the 2017 World Bowling World
Championships - also included Johnson, who is excit-
ed to share the things his predecessors taught him.
"I've always been an emotional guy, and I wear my
heart on my sleeve, but I had amazing mentors in
Chris Barnes and Tommy Jones, and I really tried to
pay attention to how they handled themselves in dif-
ferent situations," said Johnson, who also earned an
all-events bronze medal at the 2017 World
Championships. "I had to dial a lot of my emotions
back early on today, and I kept telling Sean to keep
looking forward and stay on the gas. We needed to
stay focused and save the celebration for when the
job was done."
Both high-speed, high-rev players, Johnson and
Wilcox see the lane in a similar fashion. That, along
with great communication, gave them a clear picture
and strategy during the six games, and moves and
ball changes came easily as well.
The two have been friends since Wilcox found his
way into the youth spotlight in 2012, and those years
of familiarity and friendship have helped make
Wilcox's international debut a smooth and memo-
rable one.
His contribution to the doubles win was steady and
included games of 244, 277, 248, 227, 257 and 258.
"This is absolutely surreal," Wilcox said. "Being
my first time on the team and being picked to travel
already was a dream come true. Then, coming out
and doing what we did today was amazing. I've
known AJ for a long time, and he's been nothing short
of amazing to look up to. We just worked so well
together today, kept each other's heads on straight,
talked through the moves and bowled to the best of
our ability. To break a record and win the gold medal
is just awesome. I've accomplished a few great things
in my short career, but this is the one that's left me
almost speechless."
Team USA's Darren Tang and John Janawicz set the
bar with a 2,707 total on the day's opening squad.
Tang, who earned the singles silver medal, led the

The final Team USA tandem on the lanes was
another pair of first-time participants, Nick Pate and
Perry Crowell IV, who posted sets of 1,387 and
1,241, respectively, for a 2,628 total. They finished
tied for 10th.
The United States entered the 2019 PABCON
Men's Championships as the defending champion in
the doubles event. John Szczerbinski and AJ
Chapman claimed the gold medal at the 2016 PAB-
CON Adult Championships in Cali, Colombia.

 United States Wins Team, Sweeps All-Events at 2019 PABCON Men’s Championships
LIMA, Peru - There aren't formal timeouts in
bowling, but when Team USA head coach
Rod Ross saw his team's energy and commu-
nication in need of a boost at the Pan
American Bowling Confederation Men's
Championships, he pulled the competitors
aside and did what any coach would do - he
explained what he was seeing from his per-
spective and offered words of inspiration.
The rallying moment came after the fourth
frame of their first game at the new Bowling
Center of La Villa Deportiva Nacional
(VIDENA), and his encouragement ignited a
fire in his well-balanced team, which is a
combination of youth and experience.
The re-energized group then pulled away
from the 16-team field and went on to win
the five-player team gold medal by nearly
300 pins. It was the second consecutive time,
and 15th time overall, Team USA claimed
the title, and the momentum also helped the
group sweep the all-events medals.
Team USA rolled games of 1,119, 1,186
and 1,112 on to remain atop the standings
with a 6,929 six-game total, a new PABCON
Championships record. The group posted
three-game sets of 3,512 and 3,417.
This year's performance topped the previ-
ous record of 6,817, set by Team USA at the
2016 event in Cali, Colombia.
Canada, also the team runner-up to Team
USA in 2016, earned this year's silver medal
with a 6,636 total. Puerto Rico jumped over
Colombia in the final game to secure the
bronze medal with a 6,588 performance.
"We came out today a little flat, and it
seemed like our guys were bowling more to
protect the small lead we had from yesterday,
rather than leaving that in the past and trying
to win today's three games," Ross said. "To
win the day, you have to win the games. To
win the games, you have to win the frames.
To win the frames, you have to win the shot.
After I pulled them aside, they really turned
things around, and we're excited to come
away with the gold medal."
AJ Johnson led the way for Team USA in
the six team games, posting a 1,441 total.
That included a 279 finish and 783 series. He
was followed by Darren Tang (1,410), Nick
Pate (1,381), Sean Wilcox (1,294), John
Janawicz (702), Perry Crowell (701).
The team competition was the only event
of the 2019 PABCON Men's Championships
that was contested over two days (three
games each day), compared to the singles,
doubles and trios events, which all featured
six consecutive games.
For some teams and bowlers, there was
potential for a slowing of momentum, while
others had an opportunity to regroup and
consider a new strategy for attacking the 41-
foot World Bowling Rome oil pattern.
Team USA experienced a little of both, as
it took a few frames on Day 2 to find the
right energy level and pace, while a few
lanes away, Janawicz's clear mind allowed
him to catapult up the all-events standings
and into the cut for the week-ending Masters
event.
He started the final day in 30th place and
used a 748 series to move himself up to 16th
place, earning the final spot in match play
with a 5,300 total, a 220.83 average for 24
games.
The Masters portion of the tournament
features the top 16 players in the all-events
standings, who bowl best-of-three head-to-
head matches. All-events included six games
in each event (singles, doubles, trios and
team).
In the finale, focused solely on making
sure Team USA locked up the team gold
medal, Johnson rolled his highest game of
the week, 279, to secure his second and third
gold medals of the tournament. He and
Wilcox won doubles earlier in the week with
a record total.
