2016 FIRST YEAR SPECIFICATIONS

 NEW HEADWAY ELEMENTARY FOURTH EDITION U. 1 to 8

(St's & Workbook)

 KIDNAP

IMPORTANT

This new edition of Headway Elementary has not only updated a lot of material to make it more appealing to
students but also reduced the load of units (not the load of teaching points). The first unit of the book is the
one that differs the most from the previous edition. That is the reason why we strongly recommend that you
do some pre-teaching of the items that we are listing below before starting with the book in class. Students
will need to have already practised the following points to be able to take full advantage of the contents of
the book:

 the alphabet,
 numbers (age – phone numbers),
 pronouns (personal – possessive adjectives),
 verb ‘to be’ (Present Simple: affirmative-interrogative-negative),
 some oral practice of the structures/questions on pages 6-7.

You are free to choose any material to help you. However, we would like to let you know that
Headway Beginner Part A, book, workbook and resource book can be very useful.

* UNIT 2: teach Object pronouns before dealing with the Reading and Speaking section
(pgs18-19) (See writing section unit 2 page 105)

* The Present Continuous is not seen in First Year as it is presented in Unit 10.

One of the main assets of the coursebook is that it gives intensive practice of the four skills, Speaking, Listening, Reading and
Writing, which will enable your students to perform satisfactorily at an elementary level.

Speaking: The main purpose is fluency, not grammar accuracy, so encourage your students to interact with their partners as
naturally as possible. Give your students plenty of practice in the use of functions, especially those appearing in the ‘Everyday
English’ sections.

Listening: The book contains class audio CDs with invaluable listening practice, so make the most of it.

Writing: Consult the Writing Section in the Student's Book

Types of writing: see 2016 Types of writing for Teens and Adults on our web site.
NOTE: to practise ‘article about a holiday’ you may use the material on page 64 of Headway
Elementary Third edition
For further practice you may consult ‘Reading & Writing Targets 1’,by V.Evans

The Student’s book contains the iTutor DVD ROM at the back with excellent and highly varied extra practice for the
students to do on their own. It contains exercises for each unit (reading, listening, writing, video, everyday English and
grammar) and further practice on reading, listening and writing skills as well as videos, everyday English and grammar
exercises. It also has a word list section for every unit. The Workbook includes an audio CD. Encourage your students to
use both so that they can make the most of them. There is also a student’s website for extra practice and games at
www.oup.com/elt/headway

We recommend the use of the Teacher's Book, which will guide you throughout the course.
There is a Teacher’s Resource Disk at the back. This CD contains very useful material:
- Unit tests / Stop and Check tests / Progress tests / Skills tests / Exit tests
- Communicative activities / Grammar reference, Word lists and Tapescripts
We strongly recommend that you use them
There is a Teacher’s website for resources and ideas at http://elt.oup.com/teachers/headway

Extensive Reading: Start with "Kidnap" in August when your students will have acquired more knowledge of the language.
We advise you to carry out the activities at the end of each chapter. . We suggest you use the CDROM that accompanies the
book to listen to the audio to help students to further develop their listening skills. Students will find lots of activities in the
same CDROM to practise at their computers.

Please help your students develop their reading skills by encouraging them to read the story and exploit it through different
activities. By no means should you give them just a summary to study by heart.

For further grammar practice you may consult ´Grammar Spectrum 1’ (Elementary) by K. Paterson and M. Harrison, ‘Oxford
Practice Grammar’ (Basic) by Coe, Harrison and Paterson, ‘Macmillan English Grammar in Context’ (Essential) by S. Clarke
and ´Essential Grammar in Use’ (Elementary) by R. Murphy.
