Argumentative

This assignment was an argumentative essay that I completed in my AP English

Language class my junior year and I was assigned to do a gender research essay. For this

assignment, I was asked to use evidence that supported my claim that “men and women are

treated different in the field of work; most don’t notice this but some choose to ignore it”.

This assignment was an argumentative piece because I developed a claim that argues that

women are treated less than men. I provided different pieces of evidence to support my claim.

For example, in my sixth paragraph I stated, “In the article, “13 Subtle Ways Women Are

Treated Differently At Work” it mentioned, “When men and women work together, the men are

more likely to get the credit”. The quality of work that a female does will never be recognized

and its what women have to deal with, but men will never know how it feels like to be treated

like this because they have always been portrayed as dominate and as a leader but women could

be leaders and dominate just like men.” I was able to explain the evidence that I had found to

give the reader a better understanding on my argument.

The SLO that I meet in completing this assignment was the Critical Thinker SLO. I was a

critical thinker by analyzing the evidence I was going to use to support my argument and put

everything into context. I was able to do this through the use of the internet using articles and

statistics. This assignment helped me work on being a better critical thinker because I learned

how to analyze information in a better way to support my claim. I was a critical thinker because

for this essay I did have to analyze my research and I had to put it in my own words. For

example, throughout my research I found out that women are outpacing men in education. In

2017 research shows that 38% of women have had a bachelor’s degree in any field, meanwhile a

male has 33%. This shows that women do out space men, and it is unfair to us women to get
devalued just because of our gender, when we are working really hard to progress and our level

of education shows. Doing this argumentative essay allowed me to use the slo of being a critical

thinker because I had to structure my essay in ways where it made sense.

This skill can be used in the future when I go to college because I will be able to write

argumentative essays in a well-organized way. Analyzing information will become easier for me

to do because I have practiced this skill a lot throughout my high school experience.
