Parent Teacher Interaction

To keep the parents well informed on the all round progress of their wards the Chemistry
Department organizes a Parent–Teacher meeting in addition to the informal telephonic
communications with the Parents / Guardians.
Throughout the year a regular informal telephonic contact is maintained with the parents
of the TYBSc Chemistry students. This also helps to identify certain unfavourable
situations/circumstances that the students encounter and thus solutions for the same can be
determined.
This year the students of FYBSc A & B groups were contacted in the month of March.
The parents were asked to meet the Head of the Department within a period of 15 days as
per the convenience of the parents. Twenty parents approached the department to discuss
about the progress of their child. The parents appreciated the concern of the faculty
members and promised to cooperate with the staff.
Interaction with Alumni
The Alumni of the Chemistry Department regularly visit the department and interact with
the final year students briefing them on the latest developments during the course of their
post graduation studies or at the work place i.e. industries where our Alumni are in the
Marketing, R&D and IPR departments. These informal interactions help the students get
first hand information on the future scopes in chemistry, job opportunities and
expectations of the workplace.

Departmental Activities [2006-2007]

Activities conducted:
1. Orientation Programme for Freshers - Inaugural Activity: Guest Lecture
The inaugural activity of the Chemistry Department of the College was a Guest Lecture on
‘Scope and Future in Chemistry’ mainly arranged to provide a greater insight to the
students on the future prospects after graduating with Chemistry. The resource person for
the day was Prof. Anamik Shah, a Professor and a very active faculty at the Chemistry
Department Saurashtra University. Prof Shah delivered an interesting lecture on the role of
Chemistry in life and the career options as well as the job opportunities after graduating
with Chemistry.
Chemistry is a subject with a wide applicability and almost every branch of science is
related to chemistry – no branch can be considered to be complete without Chemistry. The
trend today is towards applied science particularly, Biotechnology -with a vast number of
students opting to graduating with BT. However in order to be a good Biotechnologist one
must be good chemist particularly an Organic Chemist.
Enlightening the students on the importance of Chemistry, Prof Shah mentioned its
usefulness in almost all branches, be it – Chemical Industries, Pharma Companies,
Polymer industries, Food Products, Dye Industry, Paints and Vanishes, Analytical
Sections – you name the industry and there is always a requirement of a Chemist.
A Chemist with a good writing skill can also utilize these skills in terms of
Documentations, Patent Writing, Journal Writing …
Finally Prof Shah said, in order to be successful one must develop a love for the subject –
an inclination towards the subject. A deep sense of involvement is necessary so that one
can have a clear base of a particular subject. To be successful in any competitive
examination what is essential is speed, memory and an analytical mind.
The programme was hosted by Brigeet of SYBSc B. The response of the students was
overwhelming. 205 students of the BSc stream attended the orientation programme.

2. Class Seminars:
Classroom seminars are conducted on a regular basis. These in-house seminars help the
students not only to overcome the initial fears of facing an audience but also to build up
their confidence. The class seminars conducted are interactive sessions, hence the students
also get an opportunity develop quick thinking and logical reasoning abilities. The
students also develop their knowledge by reading more on their topics of presentation.
