Homeless man charged in alleged
assault at Belmont Panda Express

A homeless man accused of pointing a
loaded gun at another customer at a Belmont
Panda Express restaurant Friday is facing
charges of assault with a semi-automatic
firearm and commercial burglary this week,
according to the San Mateo County District
Attorney’s Office.
Antoine Thornton, 51, pleaded not guilty
to the felony charges Tuesday and the coun-
ty’s private defender program was appointed
to his case, according to prosecutors.
At about 1:30 p.m. May 24, Thornton was
allegedly in line to order food at the restau-
rant on the 1000 block of El Camino Real
when he bumped into the alleged victim, a

Bicyclist suffers serious
injuries in collision with vehicle
A bicyclist suffered serious injuries when
a vehicle struck her in South San Francisco
on Saturday night, police said Tuesday.
The collision was reported at about 9 p.m.

A 25-year-old woman was riding her bike

James A. McNulty was born on September 1st, 1931 in
Denver Colorado to Anthony McNulty and Dorothy Ochs.
He was called from this earth on May 17th, 2019. He was
87 years old.
Jim met the love of his life, Donna, while working at the
Save-A-Nickel grocery store in Denver, Colorado. They
were married for 64 years. As a young man he worked as
an analytical chemist for the Food and Drug Administration.
Jim’s expertise came to the attention of Dohrmann
Instruments, and he was recruited to move to the up and
coming Silicon Valley. He was especially proud of the five basic patents for chemical
analysis instruments assigned to him plus the associated patents issued in five foreign
countries. Jim’s career provided many opportunities for him to travel all over the
world, making many friends along the way.
The family settled in Belmont, California in 1962. Jim and Donna raised 5
children: Mike, Kathy, Kerry, Patty and Tim. They have 12 grandchildren: Sarah,
Kevin, Jeff, Scott, Eric, Mason, Shannon, Patrick, Erin, Kaitlin, Joseph and Johnny.
They are equally blessed with 3 great-grandchildren: Vincent, Caleb and Zoe. Jim’s
siblings Martin, John, Bill, Teresa and Angela all precede him in death. He is survived
by two beloved sisters: Marianne and Rose plus numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim was very proud of his 32-year military career. During college he joined the
Colorado Air National Guard and was transferred to the Air Force during the Korean
War. After returning to civilian ranks, he later joined the Naval Reserves. Jim retired
from the Naval Reserves as a Captain in 1978.
Once retired from Dohrmann, Jim volunteered at the local senior center teaching
computer classes and as a tax preparer for AARP.
Family times are full of memories of being outdoors, camping, fishing, hiking,
riding bikes, family road trips and following his favorite sports teams (SF Giants,
49ers and Warriors). He so loved his children and grandchildren. He had many
thoughtful lessons that he was happy to pass along to each and every one.

another year, but President Donald Trump and former Vice
President Joe Biden are acting like the
2020 presidential contest is already a
two-man race.
Almost completely ignoring his 23

laser-focused on Trump — particularly
his embrace of racist rhetoric . But it has
been Trump’s recent focus on Biden that
has surprised both his allies and critics,
Joe Biden who believe the Republican president
may be unintentionally elevating some-
one whose candidacy is barely a month old.
Trump’s advisers have privately encouraged him to lay off
Biden. He has done the opposite, lobbing more public
insults at the former vice president than any other Democrat
over the month. Trump’s latest attack was perhaps his most
brazen: During a state visit to Japan on Monday, he agreed
with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s recent description
of Biden as a “low-IQ individual.”
A Biden campaign aide on Tuesday called the comments
“beneath the dignity of the office.” The campaign said it
waited a day to respond out of respect for Memorial Day, a
holiday that honors the service of military veterans.
“To be on foreign soil, on Memorial Day, and to side
repeatedly with a murderous dictator against a fellow
American and former vice president speaks for itself,” said
Biden deputy campaign manager Kate Bedingfield.
Democrats on the ground in key primary states report that
the intensifying feud has strengthened Biden’s argument
that he’s best positioned to take down Trump in 2020.

Knife-wielding man attacks schoolgirls in Japan, kills two

KAWASAKI, Japan — A man carrying a
knife in each hand and screaming “I will kill
you!” attacked a group of schoolgirls near a
school bus parked at a bus stop just outside
Tokyo on Tuesday, killing two people and
injuring at least 17 before killing himself,
officials said.
Most of the victims were students at a
Catholic elementary school who were lined
up at the bus stop near Noborito Park in the
city of Kawasaki when the man began slash-
ing them with knives. Officials said police
captured the attacker but he died at a hospi-
tal from a self-inflicted cut in his neck.
Witnesses described a hellish scene: chil-
dren and adults falling to the ground, some
with their shirts soaked with blood, dozens
of children running and screaming for help,
and school bags and books scattered on the
ground.

In a nearby parking lot, a frightened-
looking boy was in shock with scratches on
his face, hands and legs, apparently from
falling to the ground as he ran for his life.
Police identified the attacker as Ryuichi
Iwasaki, a 51-year-old resident of Kawasaki,
and said they were still checking his occu-
pation. The attacker’s motive wasn’t imme-
diately known.
Police found two more knives in the
man’s knapsack in addition to the two he
was holding, according to media reports.
Iwasaki reportedly lived with his elderly
uncle and aunt and was known as a trouble-
maker. A neighbor said Iwasaki repeatedly
rang her doorbell early one the morning
about a year ago and yelled at her husband
that he had been hit by a tree branch stick-
ing out from their yard, the Sankei newspa-
per reported.

Disaster aid bill again blocked in House by GOP conservative

WASHINGTON — A second conservative

attempt to pass a long-overdue $19 billion
disaster aid bill, delaying again a top prior-
ity for some of President Donald Trump’s
most loyal allies on Capitol Hill.
Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky said
that if Democratic leaders like Speaker
Nancy Pelosi thought the measure was so
important, they should have kept the House
in session in Washington late last week to
slate an up-or-down roll call vote.
“If the speaker of this House thought that
this was must-pass legislation, the speaker
... should have called a vote on this bill
before sending every member of Congress
on recess for 10 days,” Massie said as he
blocked the measure.
“You can’t have bills passed in Congress
with nobody voting on them,” Massie said.
“That is the definition of the swamp, and
that’s what people resent about this place.”
Massie’s move earned swift rebukes from
top Democrats. Sanford Bishop of Georgia
said that his agricultural district was but one
part of the country suffering from hurricane
damage and that aid won’t arrive until well
after the start of planting season.
“Many will not be able to plant this
year, ” Bishop said. Hurricane Michael
struck Georgia in the middle of last fall’s
harvest season.
Another conservative, Texas freshman
GOP Rep. Chip Roy, had blocked an earlier
attempt Friday to pass the measure under
fast-track rules, but Democrats tried again
Tuesday. Bishop flew to Washington from
Georgia to request the House pass the popu-
lar measure under fast-track procedures that
permitted any individual lawmakers to
block the bill.
Rep. Austin Scott, a Republican from
Georgia, criticized his GOP colleagues for
holding up the disaster bill, calling them
“clowns” in a tweet.

hen the University of
California threatened to
drop the SAT as a college
entrance requirement more than 15
years ago, the College Board elimi-
nated the analogy questions and intro-
duced a new essay portion. The
changes helped keep the test in busi-
ness but didn’t necessarily make it a
stronger predictor of whether students
would succeed in college. The new
writing portion, in particular, was
poorly designed and easily gamed by
composing longer essays and using
what Mark Twain would call five-dol-
lar words.
In more recent years, new concerns
have arisen about the SAT, and espe-
cially about the advantage it gives to
affluent students who have attended
academically robust schools and ben-
efited from the help of SAT tutors.
Making matters worse, this year’s
college admissions scandal showed
that the SAT is far from impervious to
cheating.
These days, more than 1,000 col-
leges and universities do not require
the SAT or its competitor, the ACT;
the University of Chicago is among
the most recent to have dropped the
requirement. The University of
California is studying how useful the
tests really are in finding great appli-
cants. The College Board has
revamped the test yet again and added
access to a free online tutoring pro-
gram, but the objections have contin-
ued.
Against that backdrop, the College
Board has now announced its latest
gambit: It is adding a new score to
students’ SAT reports designed to
show the level of adversity they have

students take challenging courses.
The income, education and marital
status of families in the student’s
neighborhood are also among the fac-
tors considered.
The College Board is right about
this much, at least: Admissions offi-
cers should take into account the
obstacles that students have faced and
overcome. Performance on the SAT is
highly correlated with family income
and education.
But the new adversity score is all
wrong when it comes to accomplish-
ing the task at hand. It is a blunt
instrument that won’t give colleges
accurate information about each stu-
dent. The index doesn’t provide infor-
mation about the actual student; it’s a
theoretical number based on neigh-
borhood census data, FBI crime data,
school data and other sources. It
ignores the fact that students face all
kinds of difficulties, many of them
immeasurable.
After all, unstable families, ill
health and domestic violence occur in
affluent areas, too. In addition, a fair
number of poor families live in mid-
dle-class and affluent enclaves. In the
Beverly Hills Unified School District,
that the state government cannot sim-
ply trump. Local leaders will stand
together or fall apart.

17.5% of students are classified as
socioeconomically disadvantaged,
meaning that they qualify for free or
reduced-price school lunches, and/or
have parents who never made it
through high school. Other low-
income families put in huge efforts to
enroll their children in high-perform-
ing charter schools or magnet
schools. Such students could end up
being penalized because their parents
worked hard to get them a better edu-
cation.
In addition, students won’t be
allowed to see their own scores of
privilege or disadvantage, which
means they won’t be able to chal-
lenge ratings that are off base. And
it’s not impossible to imagine fami-
lies working the system by setting up
phony addresses in low-income areas.
That may sound a little crazy but it’s
no more so than Photoshopping
applicants’ faces onto the bodies of
athletes, which was allegedly done for
some of the students caught up in the
recent college admissions scandal.
The disadvantage score seems ill-
thought out. But it also leads to big-
ger questions about the SAT general-
ly: Is it an effective measure of future
college success for all students or
only those who have not faced
tremendous adversity? Or does it work
only when students are compared with
those of similar backgrounds? If so,
what’s the point? It’s reasonable to
think that a proctored, standardized
exam can at least provide a check on
inflated grades and subjective college
recommendations, but a state’s own
standards tests could do the same
without costing families any addi-
tional money. All eyes are on the UC
study of the tests. Maybe it will point
the way to a fairer and more rational
way forward.
and furious if only we can overcome
the political power of the carbon fuel
industry and its political allies that
won’t see past the next quarter or the
next campaign contribution.
Many risk managers are having the
foresight to see that these fossil fuel
“investments” in human extinction are
not a very good item for any future
stock portfolio. We can either go all
ahead full to the “carbonless future” or
end up pleading with the Chinese and
others who have the foresight to devel-
op the 21st century energy concepts to
keep us alive and kicking. The choice
is ours.

Chemical time warp
I
n 1962, in her book, “Silent Spring,” Rachel Carson
wrote: “For the first time in the history of the world,
every human being is now subjected to contact with
dangerous chemicals, from the moment of conception until
death.”
In 2000, the June 19 issue of “U.S. News and World
Report” featured an article, “Kids at Risk.” We were warned
that: “Chemicals in the environment come under scrutiny as
the number of childhood learning problems soars. One of
every six children in America suffers from problems such as
autism, aggression, dyslexia and attention deficit hyperac-
tivity disorder.”
Around 2005, in her rivet-
ing book, “The Body
Toxic,” Nena Baker warns
us: “In the United States our
chemical neighborhood
includes more than 80,000
industrial substances regis-
tered for commercial purpos-
es with the EPA. About
10,000 of these chemicals
are widely used in every-
thing from clothes, carpet-
ing, household cleaners and
computers to food, food
containers, paint, cookware
and cosmetics. But the vast majority of them have not been
tested for potential side effects because the U.S. Toxic
Substance Control Act of 1976 does not require it. The EPA
has required testing of only 200 and restricted just five.”
In 2010, the “Journal of Pediatrics” concluded that an
association exists between exposure to pesticides and the
increase of ADHD in children. That same year, “Time” maga-
zine published an article titled, “Cancer, Cancer
Everywhere.” It was based on a report by The President’s
Cancer Panel about the risk of cancer from “chemicals and
other substances in the environment.”
Move on up to 2019. “Recent research identified 44 high-
ly toxic chemicals in carpets that we inhale through our
lungs and absorb through our skin. These carpets are used in
homes, offices and schools, making them less healthy
places to live, work, study and play. Children are particular-
ly vulnerable because their brains and reproductive organs
are still developing; they spend more time on the floor. Air
pollution is particularly harmful to infants.” — Mercury
News, Jan. 16.
Poisonous chemicals are everywhere, yet very little is
done about the problem. One poignant example was report-
ed in the May 22 Mercury News: “They grow nation’s food
but can’t drink water at their homes” — referring to a big
problem in the Central Valley “where their faucets spew
toxic water tainted by arsenic and fertilizer chemicals.” And
add the poisons in the atmosphere caused by weed killers
like Roundup. Apparently, by the end of this year, the
Environmental Protection Agency is planning to start work
on a long-awaited plan (long overdue) to set national drink-
ing water standards for two harmful chemicals linked to can-
cer, low birth weight and other health issues.
But not to worry! In “The Week,” March 28, we read: “A
West Virginia industry group has successfully fought clean
water standards for the state, partly arguing that because so
many state residents are obese, their bodies can handle more
pollutants from coal and chemical plants.”
Sadly, Rich Smith and Bruce Levine, authors of “Slow
Death by Rubber Ducky,” describe what we face today.
“Regardless of age, ethnicity, place of work or residence,
everyone is contaminated. Even the most clean living
among us is polluted. And even the youngest are vulnerable.
Unborn babies are found to have hundreds of chemicals in
their little bodies, clearly indicating that toxins are passed
on to children not only in breast milk during nursing, but
also through the placenta curing pregnancy.”
Shouldn’t we be able to feed our families without worrying
about noxious chemicals in our food? Shouldn’t we be able
to take a shower without being concerned about the poison-
ous chemicals emanating from the shower curtain, the spray
of water, the shampoo, any scented product that we may
wish to apply to our bodies? Shouldn’t we feel free to allow
our children to play on the lawn and crawl on the carpet
without the fear that they are absorbing such poisons as
pesticides and fabric protectors? Shouldn’t we be able to
trust that our regulatory agencies are doing their job?
For all these years, the above mentioned authors and
countless others, have emphasized the seriousness of the
problem. The dangers of the effects of the manufactured
chemicals we are surrounded with every day have long been
known. But largely, due to influence of our politicians by
related corporate interests, we are all threatened by the poi-
sons that increasingly surround us.

the complicity of our elected leaders, has kept us in the dark
about the toxicity of everyday substances, successfully
resisting policy efforts that would better protect the public.
It’s high time for chemical makers and Congress to come

Stocks, bond yield slump, signaling jitters

U.S. stocks fell broadly Tuesday as anx-
ious investors shifted money into bonds,
sending yields to their lowest level in near-
ly two years.
Rising bond prices, which pull yields
lower, are typically a sign that traders feel
jittery about long-term growth prospects
and would rather put their money into safer
holdings.
The yield on the benchmark 10 year
Treasury fell to 2.26% Tuesday, the lowest
level since September 2017. That put it
below the 2.35% yield on the three-month
Treasury bill.
When that kind of “inversion” in bond
yields occurs, economists fear it may signal
a recession within the coming year. It has
happened multiple times so far this year.
Investors have been weighing a mix of
encouraging and discouraging economic
reports this year as they also keep an eye on
unpredictable swings in the escalating trade
war between the U.S. and China.
“If the bond market was saying that the
economy is on OK footing then you would-
n’t see yields fall like they are,” said Willie
Delwiche, investment strategist at Baird.
“In many respects, equities are waking up to
what’s happening in bonds.”
The S&P 500 index fell 23.67 points, or
0.8%, to 2,802.39. The index had been up
0.5% earlier in the day.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped
237.92 points, or 0.9%, to 25,347.77,
after rising about 131 points earlier. The
Nasdaq composite dropped 29.66 points, or
0.4%, to 7,607.35. The Russell 2000 index
of smaller companies gave up 10.09 points,
Chinese tourism to US drops for first time in 15 years

After more than a decade of rapid growth,
Chinese travel to the U.S. is falling. And
that has cities, malls and other tourist spots
scrambling to reverse the trend.
Travel from China to the U.S. fell 5.7% in
2018 to 2.9 million visitors, according to
the National Travel and Tourism Office,
which collects data from U.S. Customs
forms. It was the first time since 2003 that
Chinese travel to the U.S. slipped from the
prior year.
Friction between the U.S. and China is
one reason for the slowdown. The Trump
administration first imposed tariffs on
Chinese solar panels and washing machines
in January 2018, and the trade war has esca-
lated from there. The U.S. now has a 25% tar-
iff on $200 billion worth of Chinese
imports, while China has retaliated with tar-
iffs on $60 billion of U.S. imports.
Last summer, China issued a travel warn-
ing for the U.S., telling its citizens to
beware of shootings, robberies and high
costs for medical care. The U.S. shot back
with its own warning about travel to China.

tional trade company in Beijing, traveled to
the U.S. in May for her sister’s graduation.

This year, Souza is going to lead the
White Sox into the collegiate/adult division
as the program embarks on an independent
schedule for the 2019 summer.
“I felt like we had done everything we
could at that (Palomino) level —  except
make the (Palomino) world series,” said
Souza, who also serves as manager for the
Aragon baseball team. “The idea was to
make sure [the players] are getting junior-
college competition.
“It’s a new venture. It’s exciting. It’s
new.”
The White Sox will play their home
games at Skyline College and will play road
games around the greater Bay Area, includ-
ing stops at Baylands in Palo Alto, Sonoma
State University and San Leandro Ballpark,
which is right off Interstate 880, about
three exits south of the Oakland Coliseum.
They will be making one major road trip —
a two-team, five-game roadie to San Diego,
where they’ll face the San Diego Invaders
and San Diego Hustle.

Fletcher’s mind during her freshman year at
Aragon.
It was a painstaking 2016 season that saw
the Lady Dons win just two games. But that
number quickly improved to 11 overall wins
in 2017, followed by 15 in 2018. This sea-
son, the total grew to 22, culminating in the
most celebrated win in Aragon softball his-
tory.
Fletcher and the Dons did what no other
team ever had, recording win No. 22 in the
CCS Division I championship game
Saturday at San Jose’s PAL Stadium with a 6-
1 victory over Watsonville — the program’s
first CCS crown.
“It’s crazy how we turned it around in four
years,” Fletcher said. “I can’t believe it.”
While Aragon’s freshman tandem of short-
stop Megan Grant and catcher Liv DiNardo
ruled the headlines—  combining for 22
home runs —  it’s the senior Fletcher who
has earned the final Daily Journal Athlete of
the Week honors of the 2018-19 school
year.
The right-handed pitcher ran the gamut in
Saturday’s CCS championship victory, set-
ting down the first 10 batters of the day, fol-
lowed by the last five. Between those book-
ends of dominance, she gritted through two
perilous innings, including a bases-loaded
jam in the fifth by inducing a fly out off the
bat of Watsonville’s most dangerous power
hitter, Juliana Wilson.
It was the second time Aragon faced
Watsonville this season. The previous
matchup saw Wilson homer to lead her team
to a 5-3 comeback win.
“I gave up a couple long balls last time
and I made sure that’s not going to happen
again,” Fletcher said. “Really keeping them
off balance, getting them to swing at my
junk pitches.”
Fletcher’s foremost weapon, however,
was her fastball. She notched 11 strikeouts
in the game, 10 of which she finished off
with her heater. She had to earn the first one,

for the first two games of the NBA Finals,
leaving open the chance he could be ready to
return from a strained right calf in time for

third-place finish was the best by a PAL
shot put thrower since Jefferson’s Tina
Etuale took second place with a distance of
44-11 1/4 in 1995.
Other PAL shot placers at the state finals:

Championships, taking eighth place with a
time of 3:23.44. Their time in Friday’s pre-
liminaries of 3:18.55 stands as the best time
in the CCS this season. It is the fifth time in

after an RBI single by Anastacia Alba to
close the score to 4-1, Fletcher ended the
threat with the high heat to notch her third
strikeout of the inning.
After battling through the bases-loaded
jam in the fifth, Fletcher opened the sixth
with a milestone strikeout — her 200th of
the season. Alba followed with a line-drive
single to center. But that would be the last
of the Watsonville offense as Fletcher dialed
it in once again and set down the last five
batters she faced, including back-to-back
punch-outs to finish with 202 on the sea-
son.
“I was crying,” Fletcher said of winning
the CCS title. “I was getting emotional. I
was just so excited.”

200 strikeouts this season. The other was
Watsonville pitcher Jessica Rodriguez, who
finished as the CCS strikeout queen with
209.
Fletcher finished with a better crown,
though, one that didn’t even occur in her
wildest dreams three years ago when she
first set foot on the diamond at Aragon.
Now, this perfect mix of four freshmen,
three sophomores, four juniors and four sen-
iors are CCS champs for the first time in
Aragon softball history.
“It’s perfect because that was our goal,”
DiNardo said. “Our goal was team chemistry
and winning CCS. And it happened.”

agreed to a one-year deal with troubled guard
Richie Incognito.

CB Dontae Johnson signs
one-year deal with 49ers
SANTA CLARA — The 49ers have signed
cornerback Dontae Johnson to a one-year
deal and waived linebacker Pita
Taumoepenu.
The 49ers also released Anthony Davis
from the retired list on Tuesday. The 2010
first-round pick last played in the NFL in
2016 when he suited up for one game.
Johnson spent four years with San
Francisco after being drafted in the fourth
round in 2014. He played in 63 games with
149 tackles, 21 passes defensed and two
interceptions returned for touchdowns. He
spent time with Seattle, Buffalo and
Arizona last year but didn’t play. He signed
with Kansas City in February but was
released last month.
Taumoepenu was a sixth-round pick in
2017 and has played two games in his
career.

Stanford golf to play for title

stroke play, Oklahoma State leaves another
NCAA Championship with a No. 1 seed and
no title to show for it.
The Cowboys were one putt away from a
shot at back-to-back titles until Texas sen-
ior Steven Chervony holed a 15-foot birdie
putt on the 18th hole to extend the decisive
match, and the Longhorns advanced to the
championship match Tuesday when he won
the 19th hole with a par.
It was the third time since the NCAA
switched to match play in 2009 that the
Cowboys had the No. 1 seed and failed to
win a title.
The Longhorns moved to the title match
Wednesday against Stanford, which
knocked off second-seeded Vanderbilt when
Daulet Tuleubayev made a 25-foot birdie
putt on the 18th hole.
Stanford’s last title was in 2007 when it
was stroke play.
Tuleubayev looked to have a commanding
lead, up four holes with seven left to play.
But Vanderbilt’s Harrison Ott rallied. A win

“I think we’re all kind of in survival mode
with as much golf as we’ve played, short
nights,” said Stanford coach Conrad Ray. “I
think we’ll rely on our fitness. The guys
wonder why we’re having a third workout on
Fridays in January. Now is when it comes to
fruition.”
Isaiah Salinda, a senior out of Serra,
picked up a couple of big wins to help the
Cardinal advance. Against Wake Forest,
Salinda was 4-down to Eugenio Chacarra
after nine holes. But a long birdie putt at
No. 1 (the 10th hole of the match) won the
hole, Salinda went on to win the next four
holes to take the lead.
He continued his hot play against
Vanderbilt, with birdies on two of his first
three holes before cruising to a 3 and 2

“Really proud of our guys,” said Ray. “They

Raptors reset as NBA Finals loom

TORONTO — The parade that the Toronto Raptors
enjoyed last week was an impromptu and quick one.
A chance at the real parade awaits.
There is a clear back-to-work vibe coming from the
Raptors as they get ready for Game 1 of the NBA Finals
against the two-time defending champion Golden State
Warriors on Thursday night in Toronto. There was some rev-
eling late last week for an hour or two after winning the
Eastern Conference title, but that feeling is nowhere to be
found anymore.
“We know that we accomplished some great things,”
Raptors guard Danny Green said. “But the job’s not done.”
When the Raptors won the East, after the on-court cele-
brations and a few moments back in the locker room, some-
one got the brilliant notion to take the silver conference-
championship trophy to what’s known as “Jurassic Park”
— the outdoor area usually called Maple Leaf Square, unless
the Raptors are playing.
So, with players flanked by security and Drake — of
course — Kyle Lowry carried the trophy out through an
arena concourse long after the game was over on Saturday
night, past hundreds of lingering fans who tried to get hugs
and photos, and the group eventually made their way toward
the outdoor stage. Most fans were gone by then, and the
party didn’t last long.
By Sunday, Lowry had shifted his focus to the finals any-
way.
“Pretty much,” Lowry said. “It’s a big task at hand. We
know we’ve got a good team, and we’ve got to be focused
every single possession. They’re all going to be massive in
this series.”
Handling this moment is sure to be a challenge for the
Raptors, since most of the players on Toronto’s roster
haven’t been to the finals before.
If there is a silver lining there, it’s that Toronto has
already dealt with the mood-swing pendulum in these play-
offs.
The most worried Raptors coach Nick Nurse has been
about a game so far this postseason was Game 1 of the East
finals at Milwaukee — a game that came a couple days after
Kawhi Leonard’s buzzer-beating jumper hit the rim four
times before dropping in and giving Toronto a win in Game
7 of the East semifinals against Philadelphia.
“If there was ever a time I thought maybe a disastrous
moment could happen, it was then,” Nurse said. “But man,
we played great. Totally outplayed them. We played tough.
We didn’t win the game but I thought we outplayed them
almost all the way through. We just didn’t get the ball to
bounce our way. We might have used a couple bounces a cou-
ple days earlier. But again, that just showed me our team was
capable of kind of keeping their emotions in check.”
They’ll need to be that way again Thursday night.

After winning their first-ever Eastern Conference
championship, Kawhi Leonard and the Toronto Raptors now
set their sights on the NBA Finals and the two-time defending
champions Golden State Warriors.
“None of us in October and July and June of last year were
working out thinking about the conference finals,” the
Raptors’ backup guard said Tuesday. “Obviously, it’s a great
accomplishment, and we’re happy to be taking that next
step. But you want to win a championship. You want to win
the whole thing. It’s not about just making it to the finals.”
The arena will be electric for Game 1. Jurassic Park will be
rocking yet again. But the quick little trophy parade
through the halls and stairwells of Scotiabank Arena — one
where Green revealed on his podcast earlier this week that
reserve OG Anunoby was inadvertently decked in the eye by
a celebrating fan, and where Leonard needed two security
staffers to clear his path — will be long forgotten by the
Raptors when Game 1 rolls around.
“I think everybody understands that,” Raptors center
Marc Gasol said. “You get to kind of soak it in and enjoy
that moment and after that night, the next morning, it’s on
to the next challenge.”
Everyone knows what that challenge is, too.
The Warriors are coming.
“I think along this little playoff run there’s been some
critical, critical games,” Nurse said. “There’s been some ups
and downs, and again, I know I keep (sounding like a) bro-
ken record, but we’re just trying to take what’s in front of
us. And right now, it’s Game 1.”

Durant didn’t travel to Houston for Game 6 of that round or
to Portland for the two road games against the Trail Blazers
in the Western Conference finals. He remained in the Bay
Area to rehab, and the Warriors are unbeaten without him.
An impending free agent this summer, he was hurt May 8
when he landed awkwardly on his right foot following a
baseline jumper late in the third quarter of a 104-99 victory
over the Rockets at Oracle Arena. Durant is averaging 34.2
points per game this postseason.
Kerr said Durant has been spending countless hours rehab-
bing to recover — hoping to get back soon to what he loves
most.
“You get that fear of missing out on stuff, like practices
and shootarounds and new game plans and stuff like that.
That’s what I miss the most, obviously, grinding on the
court individually and with my team. But that’s out of my
hands. Out of my control,” Durant said Friday.
“My task is to try to conquer this, and I think that’s the
journey (we’re) on as basketball players. So I’m pretty
much down for anything but I’m excited that I’m making
progress.”
Center DeMarcus Cousins, out with a torn left quadriceps
muscle he injured in Game 2 of the first round against the
Clippers, hadn’t been ruled out for Game 1 though Kerr men-
tioned the magnitude of coming back on the finals stage
after so much missed time.
Cousins — in his first career postseason — scrimmaged
Saturday and again Monday, a sign of progress he is closer
to being ready.
“I feel better each and every day. That’s my whole goal, to
make sure I get better with each day that comes,” Cousins
said last week. “Hopefully, that opportunity comes, and I’m
able to get on the floor and help my teammates and try to
help them win a championship.”

secrecy of playoff hockey.
The Boston Bruins coach
telegraphed the most important
matchup of the Stanley Cup Final on
the morning of Game 1. As long as
he had the last change and the abili-
ty to dictate matchups, his top line
of Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron
and David Pastrnak would play
against the St. Louis Blues’ red-hot
line of Jaden Schwartz, Brayden
Schenn and Vladimir Tarasenko.
In the chess match that is every
playoff series, Cassidy’s first move
put Boston down two goals in
Game 1. His quick thinking on
pulling the plug on that experi-
ment helped the Bruins come back
to win 4-2 Monday night with
fourth-line forward Sean Kuraly and
third-pairing defenseman Connor
Clifton the unlikely heroes.
Cassidy at times put his fourth line
of Kuraly, Joakim Nordstrom and
Noel Acciari against the Schenn
line with great success.
Almost 80% of teams that win

Even the Bruins’ power-play goal

But the Blues know they won’t be
able to hold down Boston’s top line
forever, so the onus is on defense-
men like Colton Parayko and Jay
Bouwmeester to keep this up.
And the Bruins’ stars understand
despite the contributions from
unlikely sources, they need produce.

The team is comprised mainly of former
White Sox and current Skyline College play-
ers, including the likes of Matt Leong
(Hillsdale), Mitchell Plane (Carlmont) and
Tyler White (Burlingame). Dominic Monzon
(San Mateo) is returning from his sophomore
year at Lewis & Clark College.
Souza said about a third to a half of the team
are returning players and another handful
—  David Bedrosian (Carlmont) and Camron
Grant (Aragon) —  recently finished up their
senior years of high school. The rest of the
team is filled out by word of mouth.
“Players are picked up based on player rec-
ommendations,” Souza said. “That’s how
we’ve found some of our best players. The kids
vouch for good players.”
Because the White Sox are not part of any
league, they are not beholden to any league’s
rules. So while the team is essentially a col-
lege-level squad, there are a few high school
seniors. But most of the team is comprised of
players who recently wrapped up freshman and
sophomore college seasons.
“We decided to cap it at 23U. But more are
18, 19, 20 and one 23-year-old,” Souza said.
“We’re not in a league, so we can do what we
want.”
Not being in a league, however, means put-
ting together a schedule proved to be a daunt-
ing task. Without a built-in league schedule,
Souza had to go out and put together a 31-game
season by serving as non-league games for
teams in other leagues. And the schedule runs
the gamut: the White Sox will be playing
against adult teams, college-level and some
high school U18 squads.
“We looked into getting into leagues. It just
didn’t work out. It kind of forced us to be an
independent team for a summer,” Souza said.
“Our schedule is crazy. … You schedule whoev-
er you want, you don’t have to answer to any-
body, you can play as many games as you
want, you can pick where you travel.
“The drawback is, there are no playoffs.”

Souza said that the biggest hurdle was con-
vincing these other teams that his was a legit-
imate operation. As a new program, the White
Sox had not built up any kind of reputation and
when field and umpire costs are factored in,
teams want to make sure that the “new guy” is
a bona fide team that will show up for games.
Souza spent several weeks finding teams and
leagues online and then reaching out with
phone calls to put together his schedule.
“There were a lot of, ‘Who the hell are you’
(questions),” Souza said. “But it’s funny how
all the (baseball) circles run. It’s a lot of the
same people (I’ve dealt with in the past). A lot
of the guys (I contacted) were very helpful.”
The only thing left to do is start play. The
White Sox will kick off their 31-game sched-
ule June 9, when they’ll take a short trip down
Highway 101 to Baylands Park in Palo Alto to
face the Palo Alto Oaks.
“Guys want to do other things (during the sum-
mer),” Souza said. “But guys also want to get
in their swings and get in their throwing.”

26 of the units will be studios, 39 units will
be one-bedrooms and the rest will be two-
bedrooms.
The project is proposed across the street
from another seven-story tower also pro-
posed by Fairfield, and though the two
developments are moving ahead at different
rates, Greenwood said the builder considers
the project a cohesive effort.
“We are certain Fairfield views this as an
expansion or phase two,” said Greenwood,
in relation to the 147-unit development
under construction at 150 Airport Blvd.
For the 200 Airport Blvd. proposal, offi-
cials will review designs and set the stage
for the development plans to head onto the
Planning Commission for fuller considera-
tion.
Of the 94 units, nine are planned to be set
aside at an affordable rate for those making
between 80% and 120% of the area median
income. According to the 2018 San Mateo
County Income Limits posted on the San
Mateo County Housing Department’s web-
site, the area median income for a family of
four is $118,400. The affordable units,
along with other community amenities,
will allow the builder to apply for addition-

face Airport Boulevard and eventually the
new Caltrain Plaza, which is under construc-
tion to better connect the pedestrian path to

Caltrain plaza and station, employment
uses east of 101, and retail and amenity uses
in downtown provide many opportunities
for project residents and customers to walk
or use public transportation and reduce
dependency on single-occupancy vehicles,”
said the report.
Considering the proposal’s placement
and its role contributing to a central capital
improvement project for the city,
Greenwood said officials are excited about
its potential.
“We are absolutely delighted this project
is coming forward now,” he said.

NEW YORK — The pugilistic and
embattled attorney Michael Avenatti
pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges
that he defrauded his most famous client,
porn star Stormy Daniels.
Avenatti barely spoke during his 10-
minute appearance before a federal judge
in New York, except to answer a few
brief procedural questions. His lawyer
entered the plea on his behalf on
charges of wire fraud and aggravated
identity theft.
Bail was set at $300,000. Avenatti,
who surrendered to federal authorities in
the early morning, agreed to have no
contact with Daniels while the case is
pending.
Later Tuesday, Avenatti is scheduled to
appear before two more judges, includ-
ing one handling separate charges that

emailed a letter — purportedly from

serious bodily injury to officers or
bystanders.
The bills were prompted by public
outrage over fatal shootings by
police, including the killing of
unarmed vandalism suspect Stephon
Clark in Sacramento that set off
protests last year.
“This bill is a recognition that we
have a problem,” Caballero said of
her legislation.

Bunch to become Smithsonian Institution head

WASHINGTON — When Lonnie Bunch
started working on the Smithsonian’s first
black museum, he had no collection, no
building and one employee.
The Smithsonian Institution rewarded the
founding director of the wildly popular
museum on Tuesday by putting him in
charge of all 19 of its museums, making
Bunch the 14th secretary of the
Smithsonian Institution.
Bunch, in an interview with the
Associated Press, said his time leading the
Smithsonian National Museum of African
American History and Culture will serve him
well. “The Smithsonian is the most amaz-
ing place, and sometimes it forgets to act
like it. I want it to act like the best institu-
tion in the world,” he said.
Bunch replaces David Skorton, who will
become president and CEO of the
Association of American Medical Colleges.

completed in 2016. Millions of donors con-
tributed $315 million in private funds ahead
of the opening.
People still wait in line to get into the
museum during peak vacation days. More
than 3.5 million have visited it to see
exhibits ranging from the glass-topped cas-
ket used to bury lynching victim Emmett
Till to the “Mothership” used by Parliament
Funkadelic and a slave cabin from Edisto
Island, South Carolina.
“What I’ve learned is about the power of
inspiration, the power of a good idea, the
power of getting people excited about a
story, so I hope to share that and bring that
to the other museums,” he said.
Chief Justice John Roberts, who is also
the Smithsonian chancellor, said Bunch
guided “the premier museum celebrating
African American achievements.”
“I look forward to working with him as we
approach the Smithsonian’s 175th anniver-
sary, to increase its relevance and role as a
beloved American institution and public
trust,” Roberts said.
Letting go of the Smithsonian’s black
museum will be difficult, Bunch said. “This
has been the job of my career, the best thing
I’ve ever done,” he said.
As Smithsonian secretary, he will hire his
eventual replacement. Spencer Crew will
serve as interim director until then, Bunch
said.
Bunch doesn’t plan to meddle, but there
are some things he won’t let be watered
down in his former museum.

The museum “should never lose the fact
that it’s using African American culture as a
lens to understanding what it means to be an
American,” he said. “That notion of revel-
ing in your African Americanness but then
celebrating your Americanness is really
special. That, I don’t want it to lose.”
Founded in 1846, the Smithsonian
Institution is the world’s largest museum,
education and research complex, with 19
museums and the National Zoological Park.
Bunch expects to lead a more active
Smithsonian that gets involved in weighty
issues outside of just history.
“My whole career has been about expand-
ing the canon, making sure that African
American issues, that Latino issues, that
issues of gender are at the forefront,” Bunch
said. “And what I’m proudest of is that the
Smithsonian will take the lead in grappling
with these issues. ... No matter what hap-
pens, the Smithsonian will always be that
place to help us understand a diverse
America.”
