LAKEWOOD, NJ – At Ocean Lanes, the annual John Naughton
Memorial tournament consist of a handicap and scratch tournament.
There is a scratch division which had 18 girls and 12 boys and handicap
divisions had 11 girls and 9 boys
The format in the handicap division is four games, straight up, plus
your handicap determines the winner. Out of 20 bowlers the top 5 will
be awarded scholarship through SMART. The order of finish including
the handicap Eleana Auerbach with a 970, followed by her brother Justin
Auerbach at 960. Third went to Sebastien Honeuer at 943, followed by
Grace Elias at 938 and fifth Brandon Salvatore at 930.
In the Scratch division with boys and girls in one group bowled on the
2018 Junior Gold Advancer 40 foot pattern. The set up called for a four
game preliminary and then the top 12 bowlers would bowl one addi-
tional game in order to get to the five person step ladder. Paige Peters
led all bowlers after four games with an 835 but the twelfth spot was a
tie between tori Boughton and Henry Hecht , freshman, of Howell High
School. Henry won the two frame roll off and moved into the top 12
advancing bowlers. After the fifth game the order of finish was Paige
Peters Toms River North sophomore at 1,004, the only average over
200, followed by McKenna Collier at 969. Kamerin Peters, junior of
Toms River North, was third at 936 followed by Robbie Wetzel at 927
and Leah Varela, entering Brick Memorial in the fall at 892. Paige Peters
received the U-17 Junior Gold spot, Kamerin Peters and Robbie Wetzel
received the U-20 Junior Gold spots and Leah Varela won the U-15
Junior Gold spot for 2020 in Indianapolis. Scholarships will be awarded
to the top bowlers as well. In the step ladder Leah Varela with a 166
defeated Robbie Wetzel who finished fifth. Kamerin Peters with a 179
defeated Leah Varela who took the fourth place finish. McKenna Collier
with a 188 defeated Kamerin Peters taking third and Paige Peters with a
243 took the Championship over McKenna Collier who finished second.
Sixth place tie was Aimee Sherman and Alec Hehir at 891, Amanda
Shelters, eight at 873, Andrew Varela Brick Memorial senior at 872,
Henry Hecht at 869, John Boughton Brick Memorial senior at 861,
Mikalah Carter Brick Vets Middle School at 797 rounded out the top 12.
