ROUGH REPORT

WATER OVERFLOW ALARM

AIM:
To construct a simple water overflow alarm using an
electronic buzzer.

APPARATUS:
Electronic buzzer, beaker, plastic bottle caps (3), aluminium
foil, used sketch pen or plastic stick, 9V battery and a connector,
connecting wires, wooden sticks, glue.

BASIC INFORMATION:
The apparatus is prepared such that when the water level
rises to the top, the caps are brought into contact and thus closing
the circuit and turning on the buzzer to indicate the water level
reaching its brim.

DIAGRAM:
PROCEDURE:
1. Two bottle caps are taken and holes are made in the centre.
2. The plastic stick is taken and a cap is stuck on the upper side
of the stick and another cap is suspended on the lower part
of the stick.
3. A piece of aluminium foil is cut and stuck on the lower cap.
4. The negative terminal of the 9V battery is connected to the
positive terminal of the buzzer using wires.
5. Small pieces of aluminium foil are stuck on the end of positive
terminal of the battery and negative terminal of the buzzer.
6. The two ends with foils are stuck to the upper cap in a way
that they don’t touch each other.
7. The stick along with the caps is attached to a beaker using
wooden sticks.

CONCLUTION:
The suspended cap on the lower part of the stick rises on the
increase in water level. When the water level nears the top, the
aluminium foil on the lower caps connects the other two
unconnected aluminium foil and thus completing the circuit. The
buzzer goes off when the circuit is closed and thus indicating that
the water level has neared the top and will overflow soon.

APPLICATIONS:
In our day to day life, water is an essential thing. Water
scarcity in India is immense, so every drop of water is a precious
one. In urban areas, ground water is taken and stored in large
tanks on the top of the houses. Sometimes, the tank overflows and
we do not know that. As a result large amount of water is wasted
daily due to our ignorance. To avoid this, such mechanisms can
be used and the motor can be switched off before overflowing, thus
avoiding the wastage of water.
PRECAUTIONS:
1. The aluminium foils on the upper cap should not touch
each other.
2. The lower cap should be suspended freely and should rise
along the rise of water.

SOURCES OF ERROR:
1. The upper cap coils may touch each other.
2. There may be loose connection in the circuit.
