Read the article about “The Homeless World Cup”.

Are sentences “Right” or “Wrong”?

If there is not enough information to answer “Right” or “Wrong” , choose “Doesn’t

say”.

THE HOMELESS WORLD CUP

Most people think that we should try to get homeless people off the streets and
back to work. But few people have good ideas about how they can help.

Mel Young from Scotland and Harald Schmied from Austria had a great idea. They
are the founders of the Homeless World Cup (HWC). The HWC is an international
football tournament for people who are homeless. The event is held every year and
began in 2003 in Austria. At first, people said things like “homeless people can’t
play football” or “they shouldn’t waste time and money organising football
matches, they should help the homeless find work”. But Young and Schmied saw
football as a way to change people’s lives and to help them feel good about
themselves and get out of poverty. Thirty-one of the original 141 players from the
2003 tournament had a job one year after the tournament.

The impact is getting stronger each year and today about 73% of players make a
positive change in their lives after taking part in the HWC. After playing in the HWC,
players come off drugs and alcohol. They move into jobs. They get training and
education.

They get in contact with their families again and they get somewhere to live. Some
have even become professional or semi-professional football players or coaches.

So perhaps we should all think again about how to help the homeless instead of
thinking that we can’t do anything. We can make a difference. It seems that finding
a passion such as playing sport can help homeless people to find their way in life
again.

Mel Young and Harald Schmied are from the same place.
