be redesigned to address persisting
concerns about bike theft, but many
cyclists feel the changes don’t go far
enough.
Once electrification is complete in
2022, Caltrain will run trains consist-
ing of six and sometimes seven cars.
Each train will have two cars for bikes
and each of those cars will have bike
storage on the first level with some
seating and a second level with addi-
tional seating. The initial design of
the electric cars included just three
seats near the bike storage area on each
of the bike cars for a total of six seats

SamTrans passes budgets
The San Mateo County Transit District
Board of Directors unanimously approved
the Fiscal Year 2020 operating and capital
budgets at its regular board meeting June 5.
The adopted SamTrans’ FY2020 operating
budget is $216.9 million and the capital
budget is $14.2 million.
This is the district’s first annual operating
budget to include funds from Measure W, a
voter-approved half-cent sales tax that goes
into effect July 1. Funds from the measure
will support day-to-day management of dis-
trict services, including investments called
for in the SamTrans Business Plan like the
recently launched SamTrans OnDemand
pilot in Pacifica’s Linda Mar neighborhood
and the reintroduction of express bus serv-
ice with a new route between Foster City and
San Francisco scheduled for August 2019.

California town nearly destroyed by fire
PARADISE — Paradise these days is surrounded by piles
of crumpled garage doors and melted ovens. The roads teem
with dump trucks and most street corners are clogged with
signs advertising debris removal services or pleas to iden-
tify unclaimed pets.
But Thursday night — six months after a wildfire
destroyed most of the town and killed 85 people — the
lights will come on again at the Paradise High School foot-
ball stadium as a class of 220 seniors will receive their
diplomas amid the rubble of their past lives as they seek to
build a new future. Of the 980 students at the school, about
900 lost their homes, according to Principal Loren
Lighthall.
“We’re able to end where we began,” said 18-year-old
Lilly Rickards, who has been sharing a bed with her 26-
year-old sister in a small apartment about 15 miles (24 kilo-
meters) away in Chico since she lost her house in the fire.
Paradise High School sits across the road from a ceme-
tery, next to an Assemblies of God church. The church and
nearly every other building around it are gone. The school’s
parking lot, where seniors have decorated parking spaces in
bright colors, sits empty behind a chain link fence. But the
buildings, and the football field where graduations have
been held since at least the 1960s, are still intact.
For students from a multigenerational town with deep
roots, the school became an anchor after the fire.

SACRAMENTO — Organizers of a pride parade in
California reversed course Thursday and said uniformed
police officers will be welcome at this weekend’s festivi-
ties.
The announcement came after the Sacramento LGBT
Community Center and the Sacramento Police Department
created a partnership that will include a police liaison for
the center and training for all new officers with discussions
about implicit bias.
The center previously asked city officers not to partici-
pate in uniform to acknowledge what it called “the pain and
marginalization of community members who have been
harmed by police violence.”
The partnership also calls for LGBTQ community forums

‘Sell By’ or what? US pushes
for clarity on expiration dates

NEW YORK — If milk is a few days
past its “Sell By” date, is it safe to
drink?
U. S. regulators are urging food-
makers to be more consistent with
labeling terms like “Best By” and
“Enjoy By” that cause confusion. By
clarifying the meaning of such dates,
they are trying to prevent people
from prematurely tossing products
and to reduce the mountains of food
that goes to waste each year.
Even if you rely more on sight and
smell to size up foods, you might be
surprised by the risks and practices
around food spoilage.
WHAT’S NEW?
Phrases like “Best By,” “Enjoy By”
and “Fresh Through” generally indi-
cate when a food’s quality would
decline — not when it becomes unsafe
to eat. To help make that clearer, the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration
recently recommended companies
stick with “Best If Used By.”
Industry groups got behind the
phrase after earlier guidance from reg-
ulators, along with the more defini-
tive “Use By” for perishables food
that should be thrown out after a cer-
tain date. But the FDA hasn’t endorsed
the latter phrase, which could have
safety implications.
Regardless, the FDA’s recommenda-
tion isn’t mandatory, and consumers
will likely continue seeing varia-
tions, in some cases because of local
regulations. With milk, for instance,
states may require “Sell By” or other
labeling.
HOW ACCURATE ARE THE DATES?
It’s difficult for manufacturers to
pinpoint how long foods will stay
good, given variables like how long
they sit on loading docks and how
they’re stored in people’s homes.
Milk should be good for at least a
few days after its “Sell By” date,
though exactly how long will depend
on factors including pasteurization
methods.

as guideposts and rely on their sens-

instance, while more perishable
foods might be discolored or smell
funky.
Foods like fresh meat and dairy are
more vulnerable to spoilage in part
because their moisture allows the
small amounts of bacteria to multiply
more quickly, said Martin
Bucknavage, a food safety expert at
Penn State Extension.
“As time goes on, the few becomes
more and more,” he said.
IS SPOILAGE ALWAYS BAD?
Your tolerance for spoilage likely
varies depending on the food. Few
would keep pouring chunky milk over
cereal, but many might overlook a
spot of mold on bread.
Food safety experts generally rec-
ommend throwing out food at the first
signs of spoilage. With mold, even a
small fleck might be an indicator that
there’s a lot more of it that you can’t
see.
“It’s kind of like an iceberg: It’s
only part of what’s going on,” said
Leslie Bourquin, a Michigan State
University professor of food science
and safety.
An exception is for certain dense
foods where mold has difficulty
spreading. With hard cheeses, for
instance, food safety experts say it’s
fine to carve out a 1-inch chunk
around the mold and eat the rest. If

Keep in mind spoilage often isn’t
what’s responsible for food poison-
ing: “Sight and smell aren’t always
great indicators of safety, ” said
Bourquin.
A slab of raw chicken, for example,
might look fresh but contain salmo-
nella. To limit the chances of getting
sick from such germs, regulators rec-
ommend safe cooking and handling
practices .
HOW DO FOOD-MAKERS
PREVENT SPOILAGE?
Canning in a sealed, sterile con-
tainer is a way to preserve foods for
years, while freezing can also stop
the clock on spoilage. But even in
those cases, foods can deteriorate in
quality depending on factors such as
acidity and how tightly the package is
sealed.
In the meantime, the trend toward
“natural” foods has prompted some
food-makers to purge some preserva-
tives. But companies may find “natur-
al” alternatives that perform similar
functions, and new ways to make
foods last longer are emerging. One
company, for example, developed an
edible peel made from plants that
helps extend the shelf-life of produce
like avocados.

NEW YORK — Federal regulators
voted Thursday to give phone compa-
nies the right to block unwanted calls
without getting customers’ permis-
sion first.
The Federal Communications
Commission’s move could make call-
blocking widespread and help con-
sumers dodge annoying robocalls,
which have exploded into a problem
that pesters Americans on the level of
billions of calls a month.
One caveat: Phone companies don’t
actually have to do anything, and they
could start charging you if they do —
just as they now charge for some caller
ID features and other extras. The FCC
expects phone companies to offer
these tools for free, but it doesn’t
require them to.
The rise in debt collectors, telemar-
keters and, most worrisome, fraudsters
ringing up consumers’ phones have
led the FCC and Congress to push
phone companies to do more. The
companies have been slow to act
against such automated calls on their
own.
Robocalls have increased as cheap
software makes it easy to make mass
calls. Scammers don’t care if you’ve
added your number to the govern-
ment’s Do Not Call list, and enforce-
ment is negligible. There are 5 billion
per month in the U.S., according to
call-blocker YouMail. That works out
to 14 calls per person.
Thursday’s FCC vote could poten-
tially be a powerful counter against
unwanted calls. While call-blocking
apps already exist, you have to turn
them on or ask for them. Now, along
with clarifying that both wireless and
landline companies can block unwant-
ed calls without asking customers
first, the FCC said that wireless carri-
ers are also allowed to block all callers
who aren’t on a customer’s contact
list. You would have to request that
from your phone company.
Consumers can also “opt out” and ask
their company not to block anything.

services for free.
“These robocalls that are being
placed on their own networks are a
hassle and a cost for them to handle,”
Pai said in an interview.
But commissioner Jessica
Rosenworcel, a Democrat, criticized
the agency Thursday for not requiring
that the call-blocking service be made
free. The other Democratic commis-
sioner, Geoffrey Starks, said the
agency would be able to propose rules
against charging if that’s needed later.
Verizon said it will “evolve” its free
call-blocking tool for wireless cus-
tomers and be able to provide spam
alerts and blocking more broadly, but
spokesman Richard Young said there
will not be “short term across-the-
board blocking.” He did not say how
Verizon plans to change its offerings
for landline customers, who today can
sign up for a third-party blocking
service.
AT&T did not answer questions
about its plans but said it is committed
to fighting illegal and unwanted calls.
T-Mobile and Sprint did not immedi-
ately respond to inquiries Thursday.

Ex-deputy in Parkland
shooting out of jail on reduced bail
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A former Florida deputy
charged with 11 criminal counts after failing to confront the
gunman in the Parkland school massacre
was released from jail Thursday after a
judge reduced his bail and lifted some
restrictions.
Scot Peterson walked out of the
Broward County Jail with his attorneys
after Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer set
bond at $39,500, down from the initial
amount of $102,000. Peterson said noth-

him away.
Scherer also eliminated a previous requirement that
Peterson wear a GPS monitor. His bond is secured by
$330,000 in real estate and he will be allowed to go to his
home in North Carolina.
“He’s going to be on standard pretrial release,” the judge
said.
Peterson, 56, is charged with child neglect, culpable neg-
ligence and perjury stemming from the February 2018
shooting that left 17 dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas
High School. If convicted, he faces a potential maximum
prison sentence of nearly 100 years.
While out on bail, Peterson cannot possess a firearm or
take any job involving children, Scherer said. Peterson,
dressed in beige jail clothes, did not speak during the hear-
ing.
His attorney, Joseph DiRuzzo, said Peterson should not
face the neglect and negligence charges because he was not
legally a caregiver with direct responsibility for the welfare
of the students.
NYPD sorry for ’69 raid at
Stonewall gay bar, now a landmark
NEW YORK — Nearly 50 years after a police raid at the
Stonewall Inn catalyzed the modern LGBT rights move-
ment, New York’s police commissioner apologized Tuesday
for what his department did.
“The actions taken by the NYPD were wrong, plain and
simple,” Commissioner James O’Neill said during a brief-
ing at police headquarters.
“The actions and the laws were discriminatory and
oppressive,” he added. “And for that, I apologize.”
The apology comes weeks ahead of the milestone
anniversary of the raid and the rebellion it sparked the night
of June 27-28, 1969, as patrons and others fought back
against officers and a social order that kept gay life in the
shadows.
Organizers of what is expected to be a massive LGBT
Pride celebration in the city this year had called this week
for police to apologize. So had City Council Speaker Corey
Johnson, who is gay.
The Pride organizers cheered O’Neill’s remarks.
“The NYPD, as an institution, needed to take responsibil-
ity for what happened at Stonewall. This isn’t going to
undo the decades of violence and discrimination that our
community has experienced at the hands of the police, but
it’s a good first start,” said James Fallarino, a spokesman
for NYC Pride.

US and Mexico: No deal yet to avert tariffs

WASHINGTON — U. S. and
Mexican officials labored for a
second day Thursday to avert
import tariffs that President
Donald Trump is threatening to
impose as he tries to strong-arm
Mexico into stemming the flow of
Central American migrants across
America’s southern border.
Vice President Mike Pence,
monitoring the talks from his
travels in Pennsylvania, said the
U. S. was “encouraged” by
Mexico’s latest proposals but
that, so far, tariffs still were set to
take effect on Monday.
He added that it would be “for the
president to decide” whether
Mexican was doing enough to
head off the tariffs. Pence said
that, among other issues, negotia-
tors had been discussing a poten-
tial agreement to make it difficult
for those who enter Mexico from
other countries to claim asylum in
the U.S. Mexico has long resisted
that request.

The frantic, last-minute talks
underscore Trump’s chaotic

tariffs as a tool he can use as lever-

missing the potential harm to
American consumers and manufac-
turers.
Traveling in Europe, Trump told
reporters that negotiators had
made “a lot of progress,” but con-
tinued to play coy.
“We’ll see what happens, ”
Trump said in Ireland before leav-
ing for France to attend a D-Day
ceremony. “But something pretty
dramatic could happen. We’ve told
Mexico the tariffs go on. And I
mean it, too. And I’m very happy
with it.”
It remained unclear whether any
deal could be struck with Trump out
of the country. Many in
Washington still expect the tariffs
to go into effect barring a major
new concession from Mexico,
though lawmakers who have been
in talks with both U. S. and
Mexican officials said they were

ent attack against U.S. forces in
the Persian Gulf region, but it is
too early to conclude the threat is
gone, the top commander of

the Gulf, Gen. Frank McKenzie
said he remains concerned by
Iran’s potential for aggression,
and he would not rule out request-

McKenzie, the head of U. S.
Central Command, and other mili-
tary officials are trying to strike a
balance between persuading Iran
that the U.S. is prepared to retali-
ate for an Iranian attack on
Americans, thus deterring con-
flict, and pushing so much mili-
tary muscle into the Gulf that Iran
thinks the U.S. plans an attack, in
which case it might feel com-
pelled to strike preemptively and
thus spark war.
Tensions between the U.S. and
Iran have worsened since
President Donald Trump withdrew
from a 2015 nuclear agreement
between Iran and several world
powers, and reinstated sanctions
on Tehran. Last month, in
response to what American offi-
cials characterized as an imminent
threat, the U. S. announced it
would rush an aircraft carrier and
other assets to the region.
The U.S. also blamed Iran for
last month’s attacks on oil
tankers in a United Arab Emirates
port.
On Thursday, United Nations
ambassadors from the Emirates,
Saudi Arabia and Norway told U.N.
Security Council members that
investigators believe those
attacks were led by a foreign state
using divers on speed boats who
planted mines on the vessels.
They did not name Iran.

What happened to teaching digital etiquette?

N
ext school year, San Mateo
High School will implement
a plan that will make stu-
dents place their phones into a bag
with the goal of creating a better
learning environment.
At a glance, this is a great idea.
Users place their phone on a specially
designed bag that can only be opened
with a specific magnet. Artists and
venues have been trying this with
some success. By muting these offen-
sive devices, everyone can enjoy the
shared space. This is something that
every educator strives for — an envi-
ronment free of interruptions that
allows for the student to attentively
learn from the teacher. If we want to
give our students every single oppor-
tunity to succeed, it starts with pro-
viding an environment that is con-
ducive to learning.
But this is also 20th-century think-
ing. As much as these baggies
“solve” the problem of the distracted
student, it only treats the symptom.
There are only a few school districts
in the Bay Area that effectively tackle
digital citizenship and etiquette. Most
school districts point at how they use
Common Sense Media or Google
Applied Digital Skills online courses
as solutions. They even include them
on their tech plans. Oftentimes there
is no followup or almost no data as to
how effective these initiatives are. In
my experience, despite all of the tech
hype that the companies in our region
and communities claim, very little is
explicitly taught in our schools about
digital citizenship and etiquette.
Students are often under the impres-
sion that these are topics only to be
addressed in “computer class.” A poli-
cy of placing phones in bags sends
the message that students cannot be
trusted.

to start a conversation on device use.
This usually lasts a few weeks. There
is often little or no follow through or
efforts to sustain the conversation. Or
maybe the school addressed digital
etiquette during “code day.” Who
knows?
This is a topic that schools cannot
talk “at” the students, but rather “talk
with” and teach the students. It should
be a two-way conversation and not a
top-down policy. As adults, we strug-
gle with our devices, just like students
do. The conversation should be about
what is acceptable device use and
management. Students and adults must
know the basic science and engineer-
ing of the devices they use. Hiding
phones in bags does not do that.
For example, most students know
how connect to WiFi, but seldom
know how it actually works. What if,
instead of just suppressing phones,
students were taught this? What are
the rules that govern networks? How
does information flow and who gets to
see it? Who owns it? Once students
are taught, know and understand these
ideas, they are better prepared to han-
dle the responsibility that comes with
owning and operating a device. I’ve
seen students as early as third-graders
been able to do this and yet this poli-
cy presupposes that students are
unable to be responsible. That sounds
to me like giving up on something
that should have been taught. If the
duty of our students is to attend
school, learn to read and become criti-
cal thinkers then it should be funda-
mental that a student is able to ana-
moving out in droves because it’s
become too expensive to raise a fami-
ly if you don’t work for Google or
Facebook. Maybe then Redwood City
wouldn’t need to shut down schools
left and right.

app to see what he or she are getting
into.
I am humbled by how teenagers can
use and master Instagram and
Snapchat or whatever new app
appears. They can create innovative,
funny and thoughtful original content
and remix it to share with those on
their networks. They can also create
the crass, the vulgar and the obscene
if they are not taught.
Training and professional develop-
ment that directly makes an impact on
the student should be at the heart of
this issue. If learning in the 21st-cen-
tury classroom requires that the stu-
dent is knowledgeable on the use of
technology, so should the adults that
teach them.
This decision to bag phones comes
more out of frustration than from ped-
agogy. The brief benefits of a phone-
free classroom will be easily achieved
with this policy, but the opportunity
to teach and prepare these students
into responsible adults that can han-
dle a device will be completely
missed.

Advice for
graduates
H
igh school graduation is a crossing of a threshold.
A demarcation of sorts from childhood to adult-
hood, from high school to college, from the past
to the future.
That future starts now for thousands on the Peninsula who
have toiled for 12 years, 13 if you count kindergarten, to
reach this measure of accomplishment. Most will go to col-
lege, some will enter the workforce. Some will take gap
years. Others, albeit a small handful, are still unclear.
Here’s my advice:
• Listen to old people (like
me) who have been around.
They know things. You don’t
have to agree, but at least lis-
ten to their point of view.
• Recognize that there are
people with different points of
view than you. And that doesn’t
make them dumb, or evil, just
different. You may have precon-
ceived notions that should be
dispelled.
• Think about the economics
of an issue. Oftentimes, things
touted as a benefit one way
actually provide an economic
benefit to someone. Think
about who might benefit.
• Correspond with others in letter form. It doesn’t have to
be actual letters (I’m not insane), but keep in touch with
people using complete thoughts and sentences. It’s good
practice to understand what it is you are feeling and to con-
vey it thoughtfully.
• Learn some basic recipes from people in your family.
While it’s easy to send out for food, or look up how to
make something on the internet, there is something about
a recipe from home. It will comfort you and connect you to
others who love you. And it helps carry on your family tra-
ditions.
• Don’t take 8 a.m. or Friday classes. You think you can
do it, but you really don’t want to.
• Always think of a backup plan.
• Recognize that not everyone will like you, and that’s
OK.
• Carry a notebook for random thoughts, lists and new
vocabulary words. Life is about learning.
• Pay your bills on time. You don’t want to rebuild your
credit.
• Vote in every election, but only vote for things or peo-
ple on which you’ve done sufficient research. You don’t
have to vote on everything on the ballot every time.
• Treat with respect service workers, secretaries, restau-
rant servers and retail workers.
• Dress appropriately for the occasion. Dress up for a job
interview. Buy at least one simple dress outfit, preferably
black. You can wear it to funerals.
• Send thank you notes.
• Don’t jump to conclusions. Be open-minded.
• Start a retirement account and place a portion of your
income in it regularly. There is not a “too small” amount to
invest in the stock market. Invest. When investing,
remember that cash is a position.
• Be kind to strangers. Offer assistance. Smile at people.
Thank them when appropriate.
• Put a first-aid kit in your car, along with a sweatshirt, an
extra pair of sneakers and jumper cables. If you don’t have a
car, think about what small items might be helpful during
an emergency and put them in a bag you carry.
• Be aware of your surroundings.
• Be aware of your social media presence and how it might
be perceived.
• Be aware that some people are too civilized to let you
know what they really think.
• Be mindful of other people’s time.
• Keep in touch with friends, even if it’s a quick note.
• Learn how to use tools. Be aware of how things work.
You never know when you may have to try and fix it.
• Take walks without electronic devices.
• Don’t drink or do drugs to excess. If you do, don’t make
it a habit. Habits can turn into addictions.
• Don’t text and drive. In fact, put your phone away.
• Find something worth working toward, then work
toward it. It’s helpful to make a list of short-term, mid-term
and long-term goals.
• It’s OK to give up sometimes.
• Spell words correctly.
• Not every relationship is worth keeping. Stay away
from unnecessary drama.
• Exercise. Go to bed early. Be mindful of your physical
health.
• Money is nice, but it’s not the only thing.
• Be yourself. Be good to yourself. Be good to others.

merger offer with French carmaker Renault stunned the

The merger plan, which had sought to create the world’s
third-largest automaker, had been viewed positively across
the industry since it was announced last week. And it
appeared to be a done-deal when the Renault board met for a

draw the offer as the Renault board meeting entered the early

PARIS — Seizing on the once in
every four years spectacle, teams at
the Women’s World Cup are hoping
that the attention the sport will get
in France will bring about change at
home.
But it’s not just about soccer. It’s
about respect.
For the defending champion U.S.
women’s team, that means a focus
on the players’ fight for equitable
pay. For Australia, that means
increased prize money for the most
prestigious tournament in women’s
soccer. And for Jamaica, it means
more support for the athletes from a
federation that let the team go
unfunded, and as a result, dormant,
for years.
“It certainly is a platform. It’s the
biggest stage that we have,” Megan
Rapinoe said while discussing the
U.S. team’s ongoing fight. “It’s a
balance, though, because first and
foremost, I think we have this plat-
form and it’s as big as it has been
because we’ve been so successful,
and on the biggest stages we’ve
been successful.”
The U.S. is the defending champi-

World Cup, which kicks off Friday
in Paris. Twenty-four teams will
crisscross France over the next
month, with the winner decided in
Lyon on July 7.

NEW YORK — On an afternoon they put
down three timely bunts, the New York Mets
had a blast.
Three of them, too.
Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith hit
back-to-back home runs to begin the first
inning, then Todd Frazier took an awkward
swing and launched a tiebreaking drive in the
eighth that sent the Mets over the San
Francisco Giants 7-3 Thursday.
Along with his homer, Smith beat the shift
with a bunt single to the vacant left side.
“Show them I can do a little bit of every-
thing,” he said.
That’s what the Mets did at the plate — a
pair of bunt singles, a sacrifice, a couple hit-
and-runs, a steal and slew of pinch-hitters.
Plus, their trio of pitchers combined on a
three-hitter.
Pinch-hitter Jeff McNeil singled home the
tying run in the seventh, sticking out his bat
for a bloop single. He stayed in the game and
added an RBI single that capped a four-run
eighth.
New York starter Zack Wheeler overcame a
long homer by Pablo Sandoval and a shot by
Brandon Belt to keep it close into the late
innings, allowing three hits through the sev-
enth.

Bochy’s family moved from France when
he was a toddler. After the 2007 season,
Bochy and his wife went back to visit.
“She wanted to see Paris and see the
sights, my priority was going to
Normandy,” he said.
There, Bochy spent a day and half tour-
ing Omaha Beach and the other landing
points for the Allied troops. He said he was
overwhelmed by the rows of grave markers
at the cemeteries, and thought about what
his uncle had endured.
“It was probably the most moving expe-
rience of my life as far as travel,” he said.
The Mets honor a military member mid-
way through every game at Citi Field, and
they saluted two World War II veterans on

defending champion Simona Halep in the
French Open quarterfinals, flung her racket and
covered her mouth with both hands.
Eyes wide, Anisimova then spread her arms

In a tournament filled with surprises,
Anisimova provided the latest Thursday. Just
17 and ranked merely 51st, yet possessing the
mindset and mien of someone much more

Yankees cap, trainer Bill Mott was finish-
ing a conversation about Roger Maris.
Mott had thought the man who broke

Fame trainer wasn’t

been a chaotic Triple Crown, not only for
thoroughbred racing but for the 65-year-old
Mott.
What will be remembered is that
Maximum Security finished first in the
Kentucky Derby and was disqualified for
interfering with eventual Preakness winner
War of Will. That elevated Country House to
first place and gave Mott his first Kentucky
Derby win.
It also put Mott in a category with Maris

“My statistics probably haven’t exceeded
his,” Mott said Thursday, acknowledging
the asterisk reference.
He acknowledged that being in the Derby
winner’s circle Derby was awkward. He felt a
few of the people shaking his hand were try-
ing to get away as quickly as possible. It
was almost like apologizing for winning,
or being named the winner.
“I certainly don’t want the owners or any-
body else to think I’m not pleased about
winning,” Mott said, adding Country House
ran his heart out in the Kentucky Derby.
Mark Casse, who trains War of Will and
also will be looking for his second win in
this Triple Crown, said he felt bad for Mott
the day after the Derby.
“I think it has been hard on Bill,” Casse
said. “Bill is such a great guy. You talk about
class, you’ll find his name right next to it.
It’s tough no one wants to win that way.
Nobody wants to win that way.”
What would make his Triple Crown season
perfect is having the 1 1/2-mile race go off
without a hitch.
The disqualification marred the Kentucky
Derby. The Preakness was highlighted by
War of Will’s performance and another horse
running around the Maryland track after
unseating his rider.
Ten colts have been entered for the
Belmont, but it seems to be a two-horse
race.
Tacitus, who will be racing for the first
time since being placed third in the Derby,
is the 9-5 favorite. War of Will is the 2-1
second choice.
The other eight horses are rated at 8-1 or
higher.

NEW YORK — A former assistant basketball
coach at the University of Arizona was sen-
tenced to three months in prison and two years
of probation on Thursday for his role in a col-
lege hoops corruption scandal.
Before hearing his sentence in federal court in
Manhattan, Emanuel “Book” Richardson apol-
ogized to the players he coached at Arizona,
saying, “I let them down.”
Richardson, 46, had pleaded guilty earlier
this year to accepting $20,000 in bribes from
Christian Dawkins, an aspiring business man-
ager for pro athletes. He and three other assis-
tant basketball coaches at major programs were
charged in 2017 with abusing the trust of NBA-
bound players by accepting bribes to steer the
players to favored managers and financial
advisers.
“Instead of prioritizing his student-athletes’
best interests, Richardson sought to profit from
them, treating the student-athletes that he
coached as assets that he could control for his
own benefit,” prosecutors said in court papers
seeking up to two years in prison for
Richardson.
At a trial ending with Dawkins’ conviction in
May, jurors heard wiretap recordings of
Richardson bragging how he could deliver
potential clients for Dawkins. In one recording,
he even suggested that Arizona head coach Sean
Miller was involved in a deal to pay eventual
No. 1 NBA draft pick Deandre Ayton $10,000 a
month to play for the Wildcats.
Prosecutors haven’t accused Miller of any
wrongdoing, and he has vehemently denied
making any payments.
In a letter to the court in the Richardson case,
the general counsel for Arizona wrote that the
coach’s conduct had done serious damage to the
school’s reputation and to a basketball program
“that had previously enjoyed a stellar record of
success, on and off the court.”
Because of the bad publicity, “the recruitment
effort for future players became substantially
more challenging,” the letter says. The school
“is also facing the prospect of potentially sig-
nificant sanctions and penalties from the
NCAA flowing from the unlawful actions
involved in this case,” it adds.

Stevens shoved Lowry in the upper body, and
Lowry said he repeated a vulgar phrase to him
about four times during the brief incident.
The incident, and the fallout, was the domi-
nant story on the off day between Games 3 and
4 of the series, which resumes Friday.
“It sucks that this has to take the front page
of the finals,” Lowry said. “It’s been a fun
finals. It’s been a competitive finals. It really
sucks that this has to take part and had to be a
part of it.”
Warriors players and coaches lauded the way
Lowry was able to keep his emotions in
check, and many followed their team’s state-
ment and offered apologies to both the
Raptors and their point guard.
“Obviously, when you see the video, it’s
pretty clear who was in the wrong,” Warriors
guard Stephen Curry said, who added that he
doesn’t personally know Stevens.
It’s unclear how large a stake Stevens has in
the Warriors, and if the team will allow him to
remain part of the organization. The team’s
media guide lists Stevens — a Silicon Valley
billionaire — as a member of the six-person
executive board.

Thursday’s series of events began with an
apology from the Warriors and an announce-
ment that Stevens would not be allowed at any
more games in this series. Players like Los
Angeles Lakers standout LeBron James said
that wasn’t enough, and James reached out to
Lowry personally to offer his support. Hours
later, the NBA came out with the decision to
fine and ban Stevens.
The NBA’s ban covers all league games and
also forbids Stevens from being part of any
team events.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the
league has “redoubled” efforts to make sure
that fans understand what conduct is appropri-
ate and what isn’t.
“We have had lots of conversations directly
with the players’ association, the players,
because absolutely we want them to feel that
they’re in a safe environment,” Silver said last
week in Toronto when the NBA Finals were
beginning. “And we don’t want them to be
distracted during the game or think that they
have to take matters into their own hand.”
THEY’VE SEEN IT ALL
Last season, the Warriors had to win Game
7 of the Western Conference finals on the
road in Houston. They triumphed with an
ailing Kerr sidelined for much of the 16-1
title run in 2017.
This fifth straight NBA Finals has brought
on its own challenges, most notably all the
injuries.
“Our best basketball is usually played
when our backs are against the wall,” Green
said.
FAREWELL TO ORACLE

Up-and-coming forward dropped from Gold Cup roster

NEW YORK — Turns out Josh Sargent won’t
play in the CONCACAF Gold Cup or the Under-
20 World Cup.
The 19-year-old forward was among seven
cuts from the national team roster Thursday,
another setback that follows limited playing
time during the second half of his Bundesliga
season with Werder Bremen.
National team coach Gregg Berhalter decided
last month to have Sargent train with the
national team rather than with the youth group,
which has advanced to the Under-20 quarterfi-
nals in Poland behind Sebastian Soto, Tim
Weah and Alex Mendez. Sargent failed to con-
vert any chances in Wednesday’s 1-0 exhibition
loss to Jamaica and was among seven cuts
Thursday.
“When I talked to him and gave him the news,
one thing I mentioned was that he is going to be
the striker for the national team in the future.
We’re sure of that,” Berhalter said. “He wasn’t
able to play as much as he could have. And he
lacked a little sharpness.”
Berhalter said midfielder Sebastian Lletget’s
hamstring injury caused a roster shift that made
it difficult to include Sargent as a third striker
Berhalter did not regret the decision not to send
Sargent to Poland.
“We thought he would he would benefit from
the challenge of the full national team and ben-
efit playing a game, fighting to make the
squad,” Berhalter said.

to equal that of the men’s by 2023.
Australia has undertaken a campaign to
protest the prize money pool. The country’s
players’ association is calling on FIFA to
bring the women’s prize up to equal the men’s.
Prize money for the tournament in France is
$30 million, with $4 million going to the

appearances at seven. Altidore is among just six
holdovers from then-coach Bruce Arena’s roster
in Trinidad, including four other starters:
Pulisic, defenders Omar Gonzalez, midfielder

addition, defender Tim Ream was on the bench.
“We’re looking for these guys to show some
of the younger players the way,” Berhalter said.
“Failures are part of a player’s career. I think if
you if you ever get afraid to fail, you’re in trou-
ble. And it’s about how you pick yourself up and
how you respond. And these guys in particular
have done a good job so far.”
The U.S. has another exhibition against
Venezuela on Sunday at Cincinnati and opens its
Gold Cup title defense against Guyana on June
18 at St. Paul, Minnesota. It will be the
Americans’ first competitive match in 20
months. They face Trinidad on June 22 at
Cleveland and complete group play against
Panama on June 26 at Kansas City, Kansas.
The roster averages 25 years, 150 days, and
24 appearances.
Defenders DeAndre Yedlin and John Brooks
are hurt and missing the tournament, and four
players have injury concerns.
Defender Aaron Long has been sidelined since
injuring his left hamstring playing while for
the New York Red Bulls on May 8, and forward
Jordan Morris has been out since hurting his
right hamstring during Seattle’s match May 15.
Midfielder Weston McKennie missed
champion. That’s double the prize money that
was awarded for the 2015 World Cup in
Canada.
However, it is just a fraction of the $400
million in prize money for the 2018 men’s
World Cup. France, the men’s winner, was
awarded $38 million. The prize money for the
2022 men’s World Cup in Qatar will be $440
million.
FIFPro, the international players union,
said this week that FIFA has agreed to start
negotiating better conditions for women’s
national team players after the World Cup. The
union is “determined to making real and last-
ing progress on behalf of them,” FIFPro said.
But progress in many countries will only
come with dedicated funding.
“There are a lot of questions among players
from Latin America about how the federations
are spending the money that comes from FIFA
for women’s football. Is it really going to
women’s football, or is it going to young
male players? So we’re not talking about con-
tracts yet, we’re not talking about equal play,
because we have a situation and a landscape
that is more vulnerable, miles apart,” said
FIFPro board member Camila Garcia Perez.

Last fall, FIFA introduced its global strategy
for women’s soccer, designed to grow the
game. But the plan has been criticized because
it’s unclear how much money the organization
is putting into the effort.
FIFA wants to see women’s participation in
the sport double to 60 million worldwide by
2026. A key component will be insuring all
associations have comprehensive women’s
plans in place by 2022.
The World Cup is key to driving the strate-
gy, said Sarai Bareman, FIFA’s chief women’s
football officer. She’s hopeful that it leads to
progress.
“I really believe that a lot of the issues that
exist, especially in the more developing
countries, if we are able to really commercial-
ize the women’s game at the top end, a lot of
those challenges and barriers will start to
come away in the more developing countries
as well,” Bareman said. “So we’re putting a
big focus, particularly this summer in France,
around promotion, proactive communication,
raising the profile of our players, really doing
as much as we can to get as many eyeballs
onto the games.”

President Trump, often a critic of
alliances, hails US D-Day partners

President Donald Trump, who has at times
questioned the value of NATO and other
institutions that emerged from World War II,
paid tribute on the 75th anniversary of D-
Day to the “cherished alliance” forged in
battle by the U.S. and partner nations. To
aging warriors gathered on a bluff overlook-
ing Omaha Beach, he said, “Our debt to you
is everlasting.”
Under calm blue skies, Trump underscored
the magnitude of the tumultuous June day in
1945:
“Those who fought here won a future for
our nation. They won the survival of our civ-
ilization, and they showed us the way to
love, cherish and defend our way of life for
many centuries to come.”
The president stopped mid-speech to gin-
gerly embrace Russell Pickett, a 94-year-old
Tennessee man who was wounded in the first
wave that came ashore, telling him, “Private
Pickett, you honor us all with your pres-
ence.”
Anniversary tributes aside, questions
about Trump’s commitment to Western
alliances have been a theme throughout his
presidency and trailed him on his visit to
Europe. During his stop in England earlier in
the week, Queen Elizabeth II used a dinner
toast to emphasize the importance of inter-
national institutions created by Britain, the
United States and other allies after World War
II, a subtle rebuttal.
In Thursday’s ceremony at Normandy
American Cemetery, many national leaders
stressed the alliances that led to D-Day.

reassure allies who have been rattled by his

battle, tested in the trials of war and proven
in the blessings of peace. Our bond is
unbreakable,” the president declared.
Former Vice President Joe Biden, who
hopes to win the Democratic nomination to
oppose Trump in 2020, voiced his doubts
back in the U.S., saying Trump was
“destroying” NATO.

Trump, in France, made his own harsh
detour into domestic politics in an interview
with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham taped at the
cemetery just before the ceremony. The pres-
ident derided House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as
“Nervous Nancy” and a “disaster” and said
special counsel Robert Mueller, himself a
Vietnam War hero, had made “a fool out of
himself” with his investigation of the pres-
ident. Pelosi was among the U.S. lawmakers
attending the D-Day observances.
In an interview on MSNBC, Pelosi
declined to criticize Trump and said she
hoped he would “convey a renewed spirit of

collaboration” with allies.
In his speech, Trump praised allies for
their contributions at Normandy, saying
“the full violence of Nazi fury was no match
for the full grandeur of British pride.” He
also credited the Canadians and the French,
along with “the fighting Poles, the tough
Norwegians and the intrepid Aussies.”
Trump described some 130,000 service
members who took part in the D-Day land-
ing as the “citizens of free and independent
nations, united by their duty to their compa-
triots and to millions yet unborn.”
The president paid particular attention to
the few surviving veterans from that day
who were likely to be attending their final
remembrance of arguably the world’s most
famous battle. He told their personal stories
of heroism and described D-Day participants
as “among the very greatest Americans who
will ever live.”
What has been described as America’s
“greatest generation” has been no less
extraordinary in peace, Trump said, crediting
them for building a “national culture that
inspired the entire world.”
French President Emmanuel Macron, for
his part, told American veterans that “France
doesn’t forget” what they sacrificed for his
country’s liberation from Germany’s Nazis.
After the program and a gun salute, Trump,
Macron and their wives walked to an over-
look above Omaha Beach, the scene of the
bloodiest fighting. They stood silently as a
bugler played “Taps.” The couples surveyed
a map of the invasion and watched as fighter
jets and other aircraft, including some that
streaked the sky with red, white and blue
smoke, flew overhead. At the cemetery,
Melania Trump placed a bouquet of white
flowers at the base of a cross-shaped head-
stone.

soldiers, sailors and airmen who took part
in the invasion, codenamed Operation
Overlord, saying it was the turning point
that ended Nazi tyranny and ensured peace
for Europe.
“You are the pride of our nation, you are
the glory of our republic, and we thank you
from the bottom of our heart,” Trump said
of the warriors who took part in what he
called the ultimate fight of good against
evil in World War II.
“They battled not for control and domi-
nation, but for liberty, democracy and self-
rule, ” Trump said in a speech at the
Normandy American Cemetery overlook-
ing Omaha Beach, the bloodiest of five
landing beaches.
Macron saluted the courage, generosity
and strength of spirit that made them press
on “to help men and women they didn’t
know, to liberate a land most hadn’t seen
before, for no other cause but freedom,
democracy.”
He expressed France’s debt to the United
States for freeing his country from the
Nazis. Macron awarded five American vet-
erans with the Chevalier of Legion of
Honor, France’s highest award.
“We know what we owe to you, veterans,
our freedom, ” he said, switching from
French to English. “On behalf of my
nation I just want to say ‘thank you.”’
About 160,000 troops were took part in
D-Day, and many more fought in the ensu-
ing Battle of Normandy. Of those 73,000
were from the United States, while 83,000
were from Britain and Canada. Troops
started landing overnight from the air,
then were joined by a massive force by sea
on the beaches of Omaha, Utah, Juno,
Sword and Gold, carried by 7,000 boats.

“The eyes of the world are upon you. The
hopes and prayers of liberty-loving peo-
ple everywhere march with you, ” Gen.
Dwight D. Eisenhower had said in his order
of the day. “The tide has turned! The free
men of the world are marching together to
victory.”
On Wednesday, a commemoration was
held in Portsmouth, England, the main
embarkation point for the transport boats.
Then the dignitaries came to the bluffs and
beaches of Normandy, where veterans
recalled what they saw 75 years ago.
“The water was full of dead men, the
beach had burning landing craft,” said Jim
Radford, 90, a British D-Day veteran from
Hull, describing the scene near Gold
Beach, where British landed.
He was there again to watch the unveil-
ing of a statue at Gold Beach, where a
memorial to British fighters is to be erect-
ed.
At dawn Thursday, hundreds of civilians
and military alike from around the world
gathered on Omaha Beach.
Dick Jansen, 60, from the Netherlands,
drank Canadian whisky from an enamel
cup on the water’s edge. Others scattered
carnations into the waves. Randall
Atanay, the son of a medic who tended to
the dying and wounded, waded barefoot
into the water, bonding with his dad, who
has since died.
Up to 12,000 people attended the cere-
mony at the Normandy American
Cemetery, with U.S. veterans, their num-
bers fast diminishing as years pass, the
guests of honor.
A 21-gun salute thundered into the
waters below the cemetery, on a bluff over-
looking Omaha Beach, and across the rows
of white crosses and Stars of David. The
final resting places of more than 9,380 of
the fallen stretched out before the guests.
Britain’s Prince Charles, his wife,
Camilla, and Prime Minister Theresa May
attended a remembrance service at the
medieval cathedral in Bayeux, the first
Normandy town liberated by Allied troops
after D-Day.
Hundreds of people packed the seaside
square in the town of Arromanches to
applaud veterans of the Battle of
Normandy that ensued. A wreath was
placed outside the town’s D-Day Museum.
Gratitude was a powerful common theme.
Macron thanked soldiers “so that France
could become free again” at the Gold Beach
ceremony with May and uniformed veter-
ans laid the cornerstone of the memorial
that will record the names of thousands of
troops under British command who died in
Normandy.
“If one day can be said to have deter-
mined the fate of generations to come, in
France, in Britain, in Europe and the
world, that day was the 6th of June, 1944,”
May said.
As the sun rose that morning, not one of
the thousands of men arriving in
Normandy “knew whether they would still
be alive when the sun set once again,” she
said.
Passing on memories is especially
urgent, with hundreds of World War II vet-
erans now dying every day.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
hailed those who “took a gamble the world
had never seen before.”

Canadians came ashore, Trudeau lauded the
resulting world order including the United
Nations and NATO that have helped pre-
serve peace.
But postwar tensions were evident. Not
invited to the remembrance was Russian
President Vladimir Putin, who had been
present for the 70th commemoration of D-
Day.
On Wednesday, German Chancellor
Angela Merkel said it was a “gift of histo-
ry” that she was able to participate in the
ceremony on Britain’s southern coast.
Some 22,000 German soldiers are among
those buried around Normandy.
The D-Day invasion was a defining
moment of military strategy complicated
by unpredictable weather and human chaos
in which soldiers from the U.S., Britain,
Canada and other Allied nations applied
relentless bravery to carve out a beachhead
on ground that Nazi Germany had occupied
for four years.
The Battle of Normandy hastened
Germany’s defeat less than a year later.
Still, that single day cost the lives of
4, 414 Allied troops, 2, 501 of them
Americans. More than 5,000 were injured.
On the German side, several thousand were
killed or wounded.
From there, Allied troops would
advance, take Paris in late summer and race
with the Soviet Red Army to control as
much German territory as possible by the
time Adolf Hitler died in his Berlin bunker
and Germany surrendered in May 1945.
The Soviet Union also fought valiantly
against the Nazis — and lost more people
than any other nation in World War II —
but those final battles would divide Europe
for decades between the West and the
Soviet-controlled East, the face-off line of
the Cold War.
“War is the most idiotic thing that man
ever created,” said Charles Levesque, 93,
who served in the Pacific theater. “Our ene-
mies now are our friends, and our friends
are our enemies. It doesn’t make any
sense.”

‘Secret Life of Pets 2’
is a well-crafted sequel

If the sweet, animated 2016 film “The
Secret Life of Pets” was mostly for kids, its
new sequel might be for another segment of
the audience altogether — whoever is buy-
ing the tickets. Amid the cute critter
shenanigans, this one has plenty of lessons
for the parents.
Most of the same gang is back this time:
Kevin Hart as the fluffy white bunny
Snowball, Eric Stonestreet as the goofy
giant Newfoundland, Lake Bell as the lacon-
ic cat Chloe and Jenny Slate as the plucky
Pomeranian Gidget. This time, though, our
main hero terrier Max is voiced by Patton
Oswalt, replacing the disgraced Louis CK.
Both films in the franchise deal with a
new addition to the family. In the first, it
was a new dog that allowed the filmmakers
to explore sibling rivalry. This time, the
stranger is a baby, who Max learns to love
unconditionally but which also ups his anx-
iety levels. (Any helicoptering parent out
there knows what we mean.)
Returning screenwriter Brian Lynch and
returning director Chris Renaud, who also
voices the guinea pig Norman, have actual-
ly concocted three interlocking plots in
“The Secret Life of Pets 2.” It’s a wise deci-
sion since none are deep enough to carry the
film alone, forcing some convoluted stitch-
ing together. But they manage it, creating a
solid piece of entertainment for all ages, if
not a terribly revelatory one.
In one story, Max finds himself ever fear-
ful for her owner’s new toddler, stressing out
as the boy’s protector. “Was the world
always this dangerous?” he asks after a har-
rowing New York City stroll. He even devel-
ops a nervous scratching tick that requires a
mortifying dog cone. A trip to a farm in the

“Hamilton” is the stage phenomenon
beyond compare, and for actor Julius
Thomas III, becoming the Founding Father
at the center of the action has been an exhil-
arating adventure.
DJ: In “Hami l to n, ” when y o u fi rs t
appear o n s tag e, the audi ence g o es
abs o l utel y wi l d. What i s y o ur fi rs t
memo ry o f bei ng an audi ence mem-
ber, s eei ng a theatri cal perfo rmance,
feel i ng el ectri fi ed?
JT: I saw the touring company of
“Showboat” in Chicago back when I was in
high school. I remember being floored with
the level of ability the dancers had. Flips
and leaps and kicks that seemed impossible.
And singing that was so different from what
I heard on a regular basis. It was a sort of
opening of worlds. An introduction to a new
form of expression. I was enthralled.
DJ: When di d y o u s tart perfo rmi ng ?
JT: I started singing in church as a kid.
But my first public performance was
singing at the school PTA meeting in ele-
mentary school. I sang “The Rainbow
Connection” along with the recording of
Kermit the Frog. Needless to say, I brought
the house down. Later in high school, I
joined the West Side Theatre guild in Gary,
Indiana, and began performing musicals
with them. I was taught the ropes by Mr.
Mark Spencer, the late Alger Boswell and
Juanita Vincent.
DJ: Ho w di d “Hami l to n” co me i nto
y o ur l i fe?
JT: I didn’t come into contact with the
show until I received an offer to audition. As
research, I sat down and listened to the cast

recording once through, and called in every
favor I could to get a last-minute ticket to
see the show. I saw the original Broadway
cast. From there it’s just been all love. The
show is genius, and every day I discover
something new while playing “Hamilton.”
That’s not just talk. Between this incredible
cast and this genius material, it’s never bor-
ing.
DJ: What was the audi ti o n l i ke?
JT: Ha ha. How much time have you got?
I probably went in for the show about 20
times before being cast. It’s tough material,
and there’s a lot to cover. So, I’d put it up
there with one of the hardest job interviews
I’ve ever had.

Cauliflower burgers burst with complex flavor

These North African-inspired cauli-

flower burgers are bursting with complex
flavor, and we love the contrast between
their creamy, nutty interiors and crunchy,
well-browned exteriors.
We found the trick was to first roast the
cauliflower, which takes less than 30 min-
utes; this intensified its flavor and made it
easy to mash the florets. Before roasting,
we tossed the florets with oil, cumin and
paprika.
After roasting and mashing the cauli-
flower, we simply added panko (it worked
far better than flour) and an egg for bind-
ing and absorbing excess moisture, along
with shredded carrots and golden raisins.
Peppery baby arugula and herbed yogurt
sauce provided a fresh burst of flavor, and
toasted sliced almonds sprinkled over the
top added textural interest. Use the large
holes of a box grater to shred the carrot.

Yogurt Sauce:
1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
1 tablespoon minced fresh cilantro

head right is his quest.
Before he leaves, he asks Gidget to take
care of his favorite squeaky toy. She prompt-
ly loses it in a cat lady’s apartment filled
with crazed felines. Getting it back is her
comedic quest. Meanwhile, Snowball is
asked by a brave Shih Tzu (newcomer Tiffany
Haddish) to rescue a tiger cub held by a
malevolent circus boss. His quest is, like the
others ones, to find his inner superhero.
Oswalt is a fine replacement for Max,
able to connect with the character’s timidi-
ty, wonder and blossoming courage. He is
helped by a gruff farm dog voiced by
Harrison Ford, who unfortunately muddies

Ford’s alpha dog is pure action cool, rip-
ping off Max’s cone in disgust (not the best
message for kids in treatment), rejecting
Max’s embarrassed neurosis and being the
cold, silent type. “The first step in not being
afraid, is acting like you’re not afraid,” he
advises.
Ford gets to play with his own he-man
screen persona, but we’re not sure this John
Wayne bit — or the whole dynamic of pam-
pered city folks versus tough country folks
— is what we need right now. Another draw-
back is the scary elements: fearful wolves
and an awful villain with a whip and a cattle
prod.
Even so, the majority of the film is careful-
ly constructed, switching from plot to plot
to plot while also incorporating old charac-

As signs of how well engineered this
movie is, a cover of Bill Withers’ “Lovely
Day” is used at the end, a callback to the orig-
inal song’s appearance in the first film. It
also opens with “Empire State of Mind,” an
echo of how the first one opened with Taylor
Swift’s “Welcome to New York.”
There are some nifty touches, including a
dream sequence in which Snowball fanta-
sizes about being a caped crusader, which
creates a comic book sequence INSIDE an
animated film. Bell pretty much steals the
movie when her cat gets high on catnip and
later teaches Gidget the “way of the cat” —
complete with mandatory walking on a lap-
top keyboard and batting mugs off tables.
All this with extraordinary animated effects.
You will marvel at how real the illustrators
have made this world, from rocky cliffs to
speeding cars and dazzling eyes. In a neat
twist, too, the cat lady becomes the butt of

It all builds to a climax where all three
plots converge, some stretched uncomfort-
ably. Max is clearly the emotional center of
the film but Snowball’s journey is just weird,
starting as a bunny who plays a dress-up
superhero, morphing into a real superhero
who is revealed to be anything but, before
proving he IS a superhero, kind of. (Stick
around at the end credits for a clip of Hart as a
gangsta Snowball rapping “Panda” by
Desiigner.)
If the knock on “The Secret Life of Pets”
was that it was a rip-off of “Toy Story,” then
the second film better grounds itself in its
own universe. Like its main three characters,
it has learned to be comfortable in its own
animated skin.
“The Secret Life of Pets 2,” a Universal
Pictures release, is rated PG for “some action
and rude humor.” Running time: 86 minutes.

CHICAGO — R&B singer R. Kelly
pleaded not guilty to 11 additional sex-
related charges on Thursday, including
four counts that carry a maximum
prison term of 30 years in prison.
Prosecutors did not ask the judge to
raise the bond amount for Kelly during
the brief hearing in Cook County court.
Kelly stood with his hands folded in
front of him and listened to Judge
Lawrence Flood describe the charges to

ic neighborhoods plus pedestrian
crossing fixes are among the new proj-
ects identified.
Councilman Mark Nagales said he
believed most of the proposed new
projects are suitable initiatives to
adopt.
“I think these projects are all wor-

reviewing and refining those recipes,
but honoring the essential ideas.”

town hall meeting can be scheduled to

program, officials examined the larger

a variety of departments. No final deci-
sion was made, as all financial deci-
sions will come with forthcoming
approval of the budget.
When discussing program-specific
spending next year, Matsumoto raised
the proposal of bringing license plate
readers to South San Francisco as part
of an effort to crack down on crime.

about 2,000 selections on the opening
list with anywhere between 30,000
and 40,000 bottles in the cellar at a
given time.
“It’s probably one of the largest
opening wine lists in the country in
the last decade,” Stannard said.

deep list of American, Scotch, Irish
and Japanese whiskey plus a tableside
martini cart with a selection of ice-
cold gin and vodka.
“We’ll build a martini at your table
and the goal is to create the coldest
martini on the West Coast,” Stannard
said.

example, will also be carved tableside
and the dessert menu will be filled with
throwbacks, including strawberries
romanoff, bananas foster and strawber-
ries roasted in cognac.

City Manager Mike Futrell also
noted there are security concerns
which come with mounting the cam-
eras, which must be considered. And
while a city law enforcement official
identified the shortcomings of the
cameras too, Futrell said more consid-
eration could be possible if preferred
by councilmembers.
“That is something we are willing to
explore, but at the end of the day it
would be a council decision,” he said.
Also as part of the discussion about
expanding services, officials agreed to
allocate more money to hire an assis-
tant city clerk, which will allow City
Hall to start offering passport and
notary service support to residents.
Discussions around the budget will
return later once the final document
comes up for approval.

Selby’s is named after a tree-lined
street adjacent to the property and it’s
expected to open in June or early July,
Stannard said.

car per train. Some even wanted all cars to

three cars per train can accommodate bikes
is estimated to cost $10 million, which is
part of why the board rejected that option.
“We’re constrained by the space we have
and the financial resources we have and I
don’t like it, I’d like to have as many
human beings without bikes and as many
ride Caltrain on there and in my mind I’d
like them to be able to ride it cheaper than
today, but that’s my perfect world where
resources are infinite and someone else
pays for them and that’s not the way things
work,” said Board Member Charles Stone,
also a Belmont councilman.
Stone also noted that while the electric
trains will carry fewer bikes than the diesel
trains, the increase in capacity associated
with electrification means Caltrain will
carry more bikes through the corridor than
it does today. Right now, Caltrain carries
about 6,000 bicycles per day, officials
said.
The latest electric train design will result
in a 17% increase compared to today in
onboard bike capacity per peak hour, per
direction because of increased train fre-
quency, according to a staff report.
And Caltrain currently carries more bikes
onboard than any commuter rail in the
country. Cameras will be installed in the
cars and officials are confident a techno-
logical solution will be found to ensure
bikes remain safe.

Board Member Dave Pine, also a San
Mateo County supervisor, suggested the
design that the board voted for balances the
needs of cyclists, who take up two spaces
in the trains, and those who don’t cycle.
“The lens I look through is we need to
move as many people as possible on this
train corridor and there’s obviously a ten-
sion or tradeoff between bike spaces and
passenger spaces,” he said.
The redesign vote also entails a $3.5
million commitment to bike parking and
micromobility options at stations, includ-
ing bike and scooter share. Board mem-
bers, including Pine, celebrated the invest-
ment.
“Because of the growth of bikes, the
importance of the wayside solutions is
critical. I think that’s the place where we
need to vest our efforts,” he said.
