Systemic Issues :

 No single set of laws on privacy is applicable across countries. Facebook collecting some
specific data in some country has led to the breach of some laws in that particular country.
Due to such large span of Facebook’s reach it has to comply with the laws present there, which
can be sometimes against the ethics which they should follow.
 There is huge information asymmetry between Facebook, other social media platforms and
its users. The information provided by these platforms is worded in such a manner that it
becomes incomprehensible to most of their users who are layman.

Corporate Issues :

 Facebook provides many free services and collects the personal information of its customers,
i.e., the users of Facebook. They sell the information of its users to different advertising
agencies and other organizations which use this information for their benefit.
 Facebook and other social media platforms are infested with many user accounts and pages
which are fake. These fake pages are handled by unknow people and are prevalent in
spreading fake news and rumors. As many of the users of Facebook are not very much
educated and many times believe in what they read on Facebook and other social media.
 Facebook stores the information on its users in its database. This storing of data can lead to
information leak of many users form just one breach into its database. And this security breach
has happened multiple times. In one instance the personal information of about 50 million
users of its users were leaked due to the hacking. According to one inside pitch, Facebook
labels its users insecurities and stores them. This information if leaked can be used for many
unethical and illegal activities.
 Most existing and potential Facebook users are habitual of checking the check – boxes to
choose any option. When new users join Facebook they are not asked to choose the privacy
options they want to opt to as, Facebook already checks all the options and does not ask its
users to check in the starting. The users have to find those options and opt out of the once
they feel are inappropriate.
 Cambridge Analytica got hold of personal data on about 87 million users of Facebook from
Kogan which was later used for political purposes.

Individual Issues :

 One researcher, Kogan extracted data from Facebook by a loop he found in Facebook’s API.
There was a quiz created by him which extracted the data of the users who took part in that
quiz.
 Facebook users are not cautious and aware enough to check the settings which are opted in
for their account.
 There have been many ethical issues related to Facebook’s functioning, of which the CEO –
Mark Zuckerberg is responsible for.
