Todays Goal:

Have students develop an understanding of the periodic table and its most basic individual elements and how
they’re structured. In addition, the differences between elements, mixtures, and compounds. Particularly
compounds

Objective:

Students will be able to describe the characteristics of and model a covalent bond

Modifications/Accommodations:

Students will be provided with an immediate copy of the periodic table for reference as well as a visual of the
difference between Bohr and Lewis models. The periodic table for appropriate information gathering for elements
in addition to atom building pieces with be used to create a visualization of elements in covalent bonds
Standards:

S8.C.1.1.1: Explain the differences among elements, compounds, and mixtures.

1e.Designing Coherent Instruction:
List very briefly the steps of the lesson
1. Review of element vs mixture vs compounds with discussion
2. Opener- video on covalent bonds
3. Teach- small lecture on covalent bonds and including demonstration of models. Bohr vs Lewis
4. Practice-Students will create their own covalent bond models and complete and exit ticket.
5. Further application- students will work on a problem worksheet. While teacher may pull aside smalls
groups who need further instruction.

Assessment/CFU
A Socrative assessment and exit ticket will be provided to gather data for both initial data CFU measurement for
current day and next days lesson.
