Finley Shillabeer Enterprise LAC&D

I was assigned a brief to create a promotional video on a specific media product. I met
the brief using enterprise skills. I used skills like planning, time management and
communication skills to achieve this. I fully planned out all the steps to create an
effective promotional video.

The first thing I did before filming was plan out all my shots, I did this so when it came to
filming the whole product I wasn’t confused and wasn’t making it up on the spot, I
thought about all the shots and the meaning behind them, if i didn’t think it fit the
narrative of my product than I wouldn't include it. I thought about camera techniques like
rule of thirds, i also thought about and planned what equipment I would use and how
much. This meant when it was time to film I was fully prepared and could get on with it. I
booked actors and had backups. so I wasn’t just going to find random people. An issue I
encountered while filming is that an actor didn’t turn up at the time of filming, this meant
that I had to then recast the film quickly with someone I had on hand. Due to my
planning skills I was prepared with a backup actor so everything went smoothly and
effectively. Having booked a backup actor made it so there was less time wasted. This
made filming delayed, therefore I had less time to film all the footage I wanted, but I still
got all the filming I required. Another problem I encountered was that the headphones I
had planned to use for this had broken, this meant I couldn’t use them as a prop. Again
due to my planning skills i had an extra pair of headphones on hand. My solution to this
was to grab a pair of headphones i had and tape over the logo, this meant that the
headphones looked similar to those which I had intended to use. My plan for this
promotional video was to show calm and peace that the headphones achieve with their
noise cancelling feature. To do this I decided to have a strong contrast between before
the headphones were put on afterwards. To achieve a strong sense of peace and
tranquility I had the world around build up in terms of noise until it is finally cancelled out
by headphones. To build up a large amount of noise I had it coming from multiple
sources. A mouth, a phone and a clock. I would crosscut between the sources of sound
and the subject of the advertisement. I used my communication skills to portrayed to the
cameramen my idea and what my plan is overall. This was to show their reaction to the
noises. As the sounds built up so did the visual aspect of the environment around him. I
used lighting to show the build up of noise and stress, The second time seeing every
source of audio the lighting has changed. I decided to have low key and one point
lighting to show that. To do so I used a spotlight on them, i feel this had a strong effect
and clearly showed the build up of stress. I used a fade on the audio to fade all the loud
noises out and to fade the classical music in, showing the viewer the clear peace and
calm that can be achieved with this product.

I went and received feedback from a target who fits the demographic concerning my
promotional video for my product. After watching it, they told me that they thought my
promotional video was effective and they said they would want to purchase that product.
There were a few things that they thought wasn’t effective, one of which being the
sound effects. They told me that the sound effects used in the promotional video were
jarring and took away from the video instead of adding to it. This wasn’t my intention
when I put those sound effects in i wanted them to be jarring so it acted as a
juxtaposition with the silence and calm when the headphones are on, my intention
wasn’t to take them out of the video and become annoying. Their second piece of
feedback was that the music at the end wasn’t as effective for their age group. My
reasoning for having classical music was again to create a juxtaposition with the loud
noises and annoying sounds, having a calm orchestral piece of music would contrast
clearly with that. When i am to do it again I will use different music and dull the sound
effects slightly.

I received feedback from my teacher regarding my promotional video. After watching

the promotional video they told me that the biggest issue concerning my promotional
video was the sound. This was the same feedback I received from my peers. Therefore
i thought the most pressing issue was my sound, and when I improve my film I will focus
mainly on the sound. I also received feedback regarding the placement of shots. They
told me that the placement of the shots concerning the clocks isn't as effective as it
could be. My logo is also not as effective as it could be and is lacking. Therefore I will
redo my advertisement with this in mind.

When I received my feedback i used my communication skills to talk to them about what
was effective and wasn’t effective about the product. I then went on to improve my
product, I started by re-editing the audio i thought was ineffective due to the target
audience feedback and the teacher feedback. The first thing I did was improve my logo.
I remade my logo using Adobe Illustrator. I decided I would make the logo more
interesting to make. I used a sans font to make sure it was a more modern and
interesting look. I put a pair of headphones so that even if you cannot read you can still
understand what the company and brand is. I then implemented the logo into the video.
The second thing I did was remove some of the unclear sound. I used my time
management skills to ensure I had enough time to make improvements. The video is
still understandable without some of the phone audio, therefore the audience will be
less confused when they view my video now. The last improvement I made was making
the fade for my intro of audio slower, this way the audio seems more natural and more
effective. Therefore the audience will connect to it more.

Product overall was successful overall, I believe due to using my enterprise skills I
created an effective promotional video. I followed the brief and created an effective
promotional video for a specific demographic. It follows the conventions of a
promotional video for an advert. I used a lot of planning skills to ensure that it went off
without fail. If i was to improve the production I feel I would do a number of things. I
would film in a different location, as I feel it would be more effective. I would also use a
more diverse amount of camera angles to make the advertisement more exciting
overall.
