Practical No. 3
To bleach 100% cotton fabric with H2O2 by exhaust
Title of Practical method.
Semester/Group 4th
Abstract
In this practical, 100% cotton was bleached by Hydrogen Peroxide. In bleaching, H2O2 was used
with wetting agent, Alkali and stabilizer at temperature of about 90℃ for 30 mins. After 30 min,
fabric was dried, and the dried fabric looked more whitened then the scoured fabric.
Introduction
Natural fibers like cotton are generally bleached with H2O2 to get higher degree of whiteness.
bleaching means that scouring is also done with bleaching. The alkali we used also responsible of
removing waxes and fats. After bleaching, optical brightener are applied to make the textile
material appear a more brilliant white.
Calculation
Amount of liquor= 3 x 50 =150
3
Amount of hydrogen peroxide= 100 x 3 = 0.09 g
150
Wetting agent= 1000 = 0.15g/l
150
Stabilizer= 1000 x 2= 0.3 g/l
1. For bleaching, the 100% cotton fabric was weighted, which was 3g. The fabric was
yellowish in color.
2. Then according to liquor ratio, fabric was placed in 100ml of water in recipe tube.
3. Wetting agent (2g), Stabilizer (0.3g), H2O2(0.9g) were added in tube.
4. NaOH (0.1905g) was added at the end so that pH of the sol was maintained.
5. Recipe tube was then placed in bath tub for 90-95min under 92℃ of temp.
6. The pH of sol after pouring NaOH was 11. The sol was stirred during the time.
7. After 30 min the fabric was taken out and washed with cold water and then with hot water.
8. Then fabric was allowed to dry in oven. After 15min or so fabric was dried and looked
whiten then before.
9. There was a clear difference of color between bleached fabric and scoured fabric.
10. But still the sample was not brilliant white. For this purpose, we used optical brightness
method.
Results
The fabric was bleached, and yellowish color was removed from scoured fabric. Fabric looked
nearly white after bleaching but after applying optical brightness the fabric turned brilliantly white.
Discussion
Throughout bleaching, the fabric undergoes color change from yellow to white. The pH was
maintained by stabilizer. The temp was also checked with thermometer and did not exceed 95℃.
In this way the fabric was bleached.
