2. Explain Stefan’s law of thermal radiation? Obtain Newton’s law of cooling from it.
A gas is suddenly compressed to ¼ of its original volume. Calculate the rise in temperature the
original temperature being 27o C and γ = 1.5
3. The pressure in a monatomic gas increases linearly from 4 × 105 Nm −2 to 8 × 105 Nm −2 when its
volume increases from 0.2 m3 to 0.5 m3 Calculate
(i) work done by the gas,
(ii) increase in the internal energy
(iii) amount of heat supplied and Take R = 8.3 J mol −1 K −1
(iv) molar heat capacity of the gas
4. If a tunnel be dug inside the earth (not necessary passing through the center of the earth) and a
ball is dropped at one end of it, then show that the ball will execute simple harmonic motion.
Determine its time period in terms of G and density of earth ρ and also in terms of g and radius of
the earth R.
d 2x
5. Solve the equation of SHM 2
+ ω 2 x = 0 , Symbols have usual meaning.
dt
6. A string is fixed at both ends and vibrating in fundamental frequency f. What will be new
frequency if only one of the following properties of string is doubled?
(i) Length (ii) Tension (iii) Cross section area (iv) density
7. (a) Establish a relation among the height ‘h’ of water column in a glass capillary tube, the internal
radius ‘r’ of the tube and the surface tension T of water. What happens if the bore of capillary
tubeis coated with paraffin wax?
(b) A spherical drop of water 1 mm radius is split into 1 million droplets. Find the work done in
doing so. (T = 0.07 N / m.)
9. One end of U-tube containing mercury is connected to a suction pump and the other end to
atmosphere. A small pressure difference is maintained between the two columns. When the
suction pump is removed, show that the column of mercury executes S.H.M.
10. What is doppler effect? Derive apparent frequency observed by stationary observer when source
of sound is moving towards observer.
