Communication
Aim/Objective of the Course:
“Cellular Mobile Communication”, is taught as one of professional elective
subject for engineering programme. In this programme, students examine the
fundamental concepts of mobile cellular communications. Topics include
frequency reuse; call processing; propagation loss; multipath fading and
methods of reducing fades; error correction requirements and techniques GSM,
CDMA One, GPRS, EDGE, CDMA2000, W-CDMA, LTE. The course cellular
Mobile communication provide the basic understanding of mobile networks, its
usage, basic data services like SMS, MMS and its improved services like
GPRS,HSCSD and EDGE. The programme also intends to provide
understanding of CDMA technology and various Propagation models. The
delivery of topics will be made through lecture classes, demonstrations and field
visits. The evaluation will be carried out through class tests and main
examination.
Course Learning Outcomes:
After completing the course, the students will be able to,
1. Explain frequency-reuse ,large scale path loss concept in cellular communications
models and to analyse its effects in interference, system capacity, and the grade of
service
2. Describe small-scale fading-channel models, Multipath Propagation and analyse their
influences on a wireless communication system’s parameters.
3. Explain basic concepts of GSM Networks, Architecture, Interfaces and protocols
4. Explain GSM logical channels and Frame structure, Handover concepts
5. Describe the various classical and improved GSM services.
6. Explain the concept of CDMA technology, its architecture and its evolution.

Module 1:
Cellular Concept: Frequency Reuse, Channel Assignment Strategies,
Interference and System Capacity, Power Control for Reducing
Interference, Trunking and Grade of Service, Improving Capacity in
Cellular Systems.
Mobile Radio Propagation: Large Scale path Loss- Free Space Model, 08
Three basic propagation mechanisms, Practical Link Budget Design using Hrs
Path Loss Models, Outdoor Propagation Models – Okumura, Hata, PCS
Extension to Hata Model (explanations only) (Text 1).
Learning Outcome’s: After completion of this module, the students will
be able to,
1. Explain the concept of frequency reuse and different typed of
Propagation models.
2. Analyse the effect of Frequency reuse on interference , system
capacity,GoS and large scale path loss on different models.

Small scale Multipath Propagation, Impulse Response Model of a
Multipath Channel, Small-Scale Multipath Measurements, Parameters
of Mobile Multipath Channels, Types of Small-Scale Fading, Rayleigh
and Ricean Distributions, Statistical Model for Multipath Fading 08
Channels (Clarke’s Model for Flat Fading only). (Text 1).

System Architecture and Addressing:
System architecture, The SIM concept, Addressing, Registers and
subscriber data, Location registers (HLR and VLR) Security-related
registers (AUC and EIR), Subscriber data, Network interfaces and
configurations.
Air Interface – GSM Physical Layer: 08
Logical channels, Physical channels, Synchronization- Frequency Hrs
and clock synchronization, Adaptive frame synchronization, Mapping
of logical onto physical channels, Radio subsystem link control,
Channel coding, source coding and speech processing, Source
coding and speech processing, Channel coding, Power-up scenario.
GSM Protocols:
Protocol architecture planes, Protocol architecture of the user plane,
Protocol architecture of the signaling plane, Signaling at the air
interface (Um), Signaling at the A and Abis interfaces, Security-related
network functions, Signaling at the user interface. (Text 2)
Learning Outcome’s: After completion of this Chapter, the students will
be able to,
1. Explain the basic concepts of GSM Networks, architecture.
2. Explain different types of GSM Interfaces and protocols.
3. Obtain the different implementations of given system.
4. Define, explain and determine discrete/ continuous time Fourier
series.
5. Prove the properties of Fourier series.
6. Determine Fourier transform of periodic signals.
7. Explain basic concepts of GSM Networks, Architecture, Interfaces and
protocols
8. Explain GSM logical channels and Frame structure, Handover concepts
9. Describe the various classical and improved GSM services.

Mobile application part interfaces, Location registration and location
update, Connection establishment and termination, Handover. (upto
6.4.1 only in Text2)

EDGE: The EDGE concept, EDGE physical layer, modulation and
coding, EDGE: effects on the GSM system architecture, ECSD and

3. Determine Fourier transform of aperiodic signals.
4. State, prove and analyse sampling theorem and Nyquist criterion.

Learning Outcome’s: After completion this Chapter, the students will be


able to,
1. Define z-transform and ROC.
2. Explain and prove the properties of z-transform and ROC.
3. Determine z-transform, ROC and inverse z-transform of given
signal.
4. Determine or calculate transfer function and impulse response of
given system.
5. Calculate the unilateral z-transform for given difference equations.
6. Analyse whether given system is stable, causal etc.
