Música y la Tecnología: Un largo camino juntos

La música o el arte de las musas es, según la definición tradicional del término, el arte de
organizar sensible y lógicamente una combinación coherente de sonidos y silencios respetando
los principios fundamentales de la melodía, la armonía y el ritmo, mediante la intervención de
complejos procesos. El concepto de música ha ido evolucionando desde su origen en la Antigua
Grecia, en que se reunía sin distinción a la poesía, la música y la danza como arte unitario. Desde
hace varias décadas se ha vuelto más compleja la definición de qué es y qué no es la música, ya
que destacados compositores han realizado obras que expanden los límites de la definición de
este arte.

A finales del siglo XIX se logra por primera vez “capturar” el sonido registrándolo en un soporte,
esto da comienzo a un proceso trascendental en la historia social de la Música. La Tecnología,
que como tal siempre había estado asociada al devenir y al desarrollo musical, da un golpe de
efecto y se instala, definitivamente, en el futuro de la Música. El paso del tiempo no ha hecho
sino confirmar esta realidad.

Lo cierto es que la relación de la Música con el desarrollo tecnológico es tan antigua como la
propia existencia del fenómeno musical. Desde el mismo instante en el que ser humano imagina
una forma a través de la cual producir sonidos que le resultan agradables valiéndose de medios
e instrumentos que residen fuera de sí; desde ese punto en el que la voz y el propio cuerpo dejan
de ser las únicas fuentes de producción musical, se inicia un camino de “instrumentalización” de
la realidad. Desde entonces, ya en dicho momento, se origina la relación entre Música y
desarrollo tecnológico.

La relación entre Música y Tecnología es tan estrecha que ha transformado profundamente no

solo las estructuras de creación, producción y consumo musical, sino que es un estímulo
generativo incesante del escenario educativo y cultural en el que vivimos. En el fondo, no
atender a este fenómeno nos deja “mudos” ante una realidad, la nuestra, en la que hemos de
vivir disfrutando de sus posibilidades.

La utilización de las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación han supuesto una auténtica

revolución en los sistemas de producción, composición, interpretación, mediación y consumo
musical. Las estructuras sociales y culturales se han visto sacudidas, por completo, por las
posibilidades emanadas de las nuevas tecnologías. Tal es así, que es difícil reconocer la auténtica
dimensión del cambio que supone dentro de los procesos creativos musicales.
 Music and Technology: A long journey together

Music or the art of the muses is, according to the traditional definition of the term, the art of
sensibly and logically organizing a coherent combination of sounds and silences respecting the
fundamental principles of melody, harmony and rhythm, through the intervention of complex
processes. The concept of music has evolved since its origin in Ancient Greece, where poetry,
music and dance were united without distinction as unitary art. For several decades, the
definition of what music is and what it is not has become more complex, as leading composers
have created works that expand the limits of the definition of this art.

At the end of the 19th century, for the first time, it was possible to "capture" the sound by
recording it on a support, this is the beginning of a transcendental process in the social history
of Music. Technology, which as such had always been associated with the development and
musical development, gives a knock-on effect and is definitely installed in the future of Music.
The passage of time has only confirmed this reality.

The certain thing is that the relation of the Music with the technological development is as old
as the own existence of the musical phenomenon. From the moment in which the human being
imagines a form through which to produce sounds that are pleasing to him using means and
instruments that reside outside of himself; from that point in which the voice and the own body
cease to be the only sources of musical production, a path of "instrumentalization" of reality
begins. Since then, at that moment, the relationship between Music and technological
development originates.

The relationship between Music and Technology is so close that it has profoundly transformed
not only the structures of creation, production and musical consumption, but it is an unceasing
generative stimulus of the educational and cultural scene in which we live. In the end, not
attending to this phenomenon leaves us "mute" before a reality, ours, in which we have to live
enjoying its possibilities.

The use of Information and Communication Technologies has brought about an authentic
revolution in the production, composition, interpretation, mediation and musical consumption
systems. Social and cultural structures have been shaken, completely, by the possibilities
emanating from new technologies. This is so, that it is difficult to recognize the authentic
dimension of the change that it implies within the creative musical processes.
