DRAFTING PLEDOI (DEFENSE)

ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES

MATA KULIAH : BAHASA INGGRIS 4

A. INTRODUCTION

And in this meeting we are discussing about Drafting Pledoi (Defense). The learning process is
about translating the material discussing about Drafting Pledoi (Defense). In this lesson the students are
expected to be able to know and understand the sentences and vocabularies concerning Drafting Pledoi
(Defense). The article discussing the Drafting Pledoi (Defense) will be given in this meeting. This
material will also make the students think requirements of Drafting Pledoi (Defense) and the students
must also be able to draft such Pledoi (Defense).

B. OBJECTIVE OF THE LECTURE

The objectives of the learning process are expected to make the students understand the text, and
meaning the article about Drafting Pledoi (Defense) by translating the passage in group. The students
understand some vocabularies concerning the law especially on Drafting Pledoi (Defense) and apply
the words into the form of a sentence. The students will be guided to make a draft that relate to the text of
the Pledoi (Defense) and the students will also be able to give some comments and opinion about the
Drafting Pledoi (Defense), know the requirements as well as structure of the Drafting Pledoi
(Defense).
C. DESKRIPSI MATERI

DRAFTING PLEDOI (DEFENSE)

Making pledoi is a tough job for a lawyer. It is of course if lawyers want to provide the best
for the client. Pledoi understood not as public as a defense against the accused errors. In
this connection pledoi is related to the struggle for the rights of the defendant and attempt
to express what is right and what went wrong in an objective of a case.

Sometimes pledoi contrary to indictment prosecution. This is mainly due to indictment

prosecution will not contain the things that weaken the indictment. And in such conditions
there is a possibility some of the facts revealed in the trial did not appear in the indictment
prosecutor. In this connection a pledoi will take the role of the neglected facts that, in order
to obtain an objective understanding of the case which examined the judge.

Of course the assessment of a lawyer and the prosecutor will have a different assessment or
similar in some respects. But in the end the judge who will judge based on facts revealed in
the trial and conviction coupled with the judge.

Thus pledoi is fighting for the rights of the accused, fight objectivity of a case (the act of a
defendant) under the law. Therefore it is not easy to make pledoi that captures all
dimensions of the examination of a case. Which would require hard work preparing pledoi a

Assignment and Exercise

1. In group of two students, please translate the passage into Indonesian!
2. Discuss any words, phrases or sentences that deemed incomprehensible!
3. Please collect the vocabularies (legal terms) in connection with the above passage!
4. Please find out a Pledoi (Defense) issued by any Law Firm!
 5. Please re-draft of the Pledoi (Defense)!
