Engine Fuel Sulfur Tolerance Kit Installation

Overview
Introduction

This document introduces the new sulfur tolerance kit.

Engine modification with the sulfur tolerance kit enables an engine to enter regions
without emissions regulations that may not have ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) available.

The sulfur tolerance kit may be installed after-in-service on select industrial engine
platforms requiring ULSD. The sulfur tolerance kit must be installed by a Cummins®
authorized distributor. Cummins® authorized distributors can be located using the
following website: http://locator.cummins.com

Note : Certain regional and local regulations related to environmental and/or

emissions policies can require additional steps to those listed in this document.
For more information on requirements specific to a region, consult local
regulatory policies.
For engine control module (ECM) replacement information, see the ECM Replacement
section of this document.

Eligibility

Engine modification with the sulfur tolerance kit must be evaluated for each individual
engine since there are differences in platforms, ratings, and local regulations. In every
instance of modification with the sulfur tolerance kit, the following guidelines must be
met:

• A Cummins® authorized distributor must perform modification. Cummins®

authorized distributors can be located using the following website:
http://locator.cummins.com
• The Cummins® distributor installing the sulfur tolerance kit must be located outside
of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulated regions, including:
American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, United States, and
the U.S. Virgin Islands.

https://quickserve.cummins.com/qs3/pubsys2/xml/en/bulletin/4388715.html 6/26/2019

• The import region must be an emissions unregulated country. Consult the local
import region regulatory agency.
• The local import regulatory agency must allow modification with the sulfur tolerance
kit. Consult the local import regulatory agency.
• The engine must be listed as one of the eligible configurations indicated in Table 2
below.

Customer Discussion Checklist

The sulfur tolerance kit will change emissions, performance, and specifications of the
engine. Reference the checklist below for items that must be discussed and evaluated
with the customer prior to ordering.

• Engines must be deemed to be in good working condition by the distributor prior to

modification. Existing malfunctions will not be corrected with the installation of the
sulfur tolerance kit .
• Engines located within regions with non-road emissions regulations will require a
signed Declaration Form to be completed prior to modification with the sulfur
tolerance kit . This form must be retained by the distributor’s local compliance
leader, and will be provided by Cummins® Care Europe (CCE) during the order
process.
• A product with the sulfur tolerance kit installed can never be converted back to an
emissions certified product.
• A product with the sulfur tolerance kit installed can never enter any emission
regulated country. The customer is responsible to remain compliant with local
emissions regulations. Cummins® distributors should reference the following
website: http://emissions.cummins.com/pcc/index.jsp?
siteId=1&langId=1033&newsInfo=true
• The website above is not available to non-Cummins entities. Customers, and other
non-Cummins® entities, should consult their local regulatory agency and Cummins®
distributor.
• Local noise regulations may require the installation of a muffler.
• Engines must meet the eligibility requirements to retain warranty. Installed upfit kit
parts will obtain any existing base engine coverage or standard new parts coverage.
◦ See the corresponding Owners Manual. Reference Section W. See Table 5
below.
• Cummins Inc. recommends that the sulfur tolerance kit be installed after import to
the designated region. This will reduce export complications.
• The amount of time for the engine to reach operating temperature may be extended.
In extremely cold environments, some engines will require additional considerations.
