“The shot in the ninth wasn’t that great, and I was-
n’t too happy about it,” Andersson said. “But I knew

were. I knew there still was a small chance I could
come out as the winner.”
Coté, working on a strike in the ninth, left a light-
pocket 8 pin and converted the spare to start her 10th
frame. Needing a strike to force a one-ball roll-off,
Coté delivered a flush pocket hit only to find another
8 pin and second consecutive runner-up finish at the
PWBA Fountain Valley Open.
“I literally started crying,” said Andersson, who
was the runner-up as the top seed at the 2016 United
States Bowling Congress Queens. “I’m still a little bit
shaky, but I’m really proud I was able to do what I’ve
been practicing for all these years – throw those
strikes when it matters.”
Coté was the top seed at the 2018 event at Fountain
Bowl but fell to Danielle McEwan of Stony Point,
New York, in the title match, 215-182. She was proud
to be able to throw one of her best shots of the day
when she needed it.
“I can take away a lot from today,” said Coté, the
2016 PWBA Lexington Open champion. “I fought
myself physically a lot just today. There were some
games where I wasn’t bowling well, but I kept fight-
ing to make the best shots I could to put myself in

under pressure, so I think I proved to myself I can
handle that pressure and make that shot. I put the ball
where it needed to go, but the pins didn’t fall my

Coté advanced to the title match after defeating
Colombia’s Clara Guerrero, 209-190. Guerrero held a
slight advantage heading into the ninth frame but also
was slowed down by a 7-10 split.
Coté, who had rolled strikes in her eighth and ninth
frames, secured the win with a nine count on her first
delivery in the 10th frame.
In Saturday’s first match, Guerrero delivered five
consecutive strikes starting in the second frame to
outdistance hometown favorite Missy Parkin of near-
by Laguna Hills, California, 238-189.
Parkin finished in fourth place at the Fountain
Valley Open for the second consecutive season.
Competition this week at the PWBA Fountain
Valley Open included two eight-game qualifying
blocks on Friday to determine the 32 players for
Saturday’s Round of 32. An additional eight-game
block Saturday morning narrowed the field to 12
players, who bowled six additional games to deter-
mine the stepladder finalists.

“I could tell it wasn’t going to be a strikefest but I like the challenge
of thinking your way out of trouble and that’s the way it was the whole
tournament,” Torgersen said. “Once you get in that mindset that’s how
the tournament is going to be, you just adjust to it. Don’t get me wrong,
I’ll join in on a strikefest party, but if it’s not, I’m not afraid of making
the big changes you need to make on a challenging condition.”
Torgersen also had a two-season stint on the Go Bowling! PBA Tour
15 years ago when he had a career high third-place finish in the 2005
Birmingham Open.
In the opening stepladder match, No. 5 seed 2018 PBA50 Rookie of
the Year Rolando Sebelen of the Dominican Republic, defeated No. 4
seed three-time Team USA member Steven Smith of San Diego, 246-
200, to advance to the second stepladder match against Duke. Sebelen,
who finished fourth, improved on his 10th-place finish in his Senior
U.S. Open debut in 2018. Smith, also bowling as a non-member, fin-
ished fifth improving on his eighth-place finish in 2018.
In the second match, Duke defeated Sebelen 245-193 to advance to the
semifinal against Torgersen.
Earlier this season the 55-year-old Duke won the Go Bowling!
Indianapolis and Go Bowling! Jonesboro Opens for the 39th and 40th
PBA Tour titles of his career becoming the oldest player to win back-to-
back PBA Tour titles.

Shocking Finish:
Regional Title Decided By Two Gutter Balls

Brady Stearns won his first PBA Regional title in Mounds View, Minnesota, in what might have been the
most bizarre ending in PBA Regional tournament history.
At the PBA Mermaid Lanes Midwest Open presented by Columbia 300 on June 9, Stearns defeated Nick
Pate, 240-239, to win the title and $2,500 first prize after Pate, needing two pins on his fill ball after convert-
ing a 10 pin spare in the 10th frame, saw his final shot drift right into the gutter.
Ironically, Stearns had opened the door for Pate in similar fashion just moments earlier. Working on a string
of six strikes including the first two in his 10th frame, Stearns also threw his final shot into the gutter to give
Pate an easier chance to win. Had Stearns struck on his fill ball, he would have forced Pate to also strike on
his first shot in the 10th for the title, but his gutter meant Pate only had to spare and get two pins.
Adding to the irony, the Mermaid Lanes Midwest Open was contested on the Del Ballard Jr. lane oiling pat-
tern. The lane conditioning pattern was named in honor of the PBA Hall of Famer who infamously rolled a
gutter ball on his final shot to lose the 1991 PBA Fair Lanes Open title to Pete Weber.
“It was the most bizarre finish I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been involved with the PBA since 1976 – 43 years.
And I bowled a few years before that,” said veteran PBA East Region Manager Russ Mills, who served as
tournament director for the event. “I thought Nick was going to throw it right down the middle, but he didn’t.
I don’t think he was aware of the situation, but hopefully he’ll learn from it.”

XBowling has developed new game designed to help both league
bowlers and America’s veterans win prizes, prestige and donations.
The “BVL Clean Game Challenge” is a simple way for league
bowlers across the country to help the Bowlers to Veterans Link fund
sports equipment, arts, crafts, dance, pet therapy and more at VA
Medical Centers throughout the U.S. A portion of all entry fees and
prizes will go directly to the BVL.
“We are in the business of brightening the lives of our veterans, and
this fun, new game on the XBowling platform will help us garner more
much-needed funds,” said BVL Chairman John La Spina. “Most mili-
tary bases have bowling lanes, and many of our veterans love to bowl.
The timing for this new partnership is ideal.”
Sports Challenge Network founder Tim Minard, who introduced
XBowling to the league bowling community, said, “The BVL Clean
Game Challenge is not just about bowlers improving their game and
winning. It’s about connecting to veterans. And when bowlers win, our
veterans also win. It’s the perfectly designed challenge — and a great
way to give back to those who served our country.”
Like other XBowling games, the “BVL Clean Game Challenge” is
simple to play. All one needs is a bowling league score, a phone and
the desire to have fun, win prizes and do good.
The United States Bowling Congress endorses the XBowling/BVL
partnership, and encourages participation in this and all forms of bowl-
ing, according to a BVL release.

THREE-UNIT LANE DRESSING RULE IS SUSPENDED INDEFINITELY BY USBC
ARLINGTON, Texas – After reviewing recent research on
lane dressing and examining the current rules about how
lane oil is applied, the United States Bowling Congress
Equipment Specifications Committee determined the three-
unit rule, required at the time oil is applied to a lane, no
longer is applicable and will be suspended.
The USBC Equipment Specifications and Certifications
team’s research has shown advancements in technology,
including how today’s bowling balls drastically alter any oil
pattern applied to a lane surface, have made the rule obso-
lete.
Instituted by the American Bowling Congress in 1992, the
three-unit rule states lane dressing could be applied in any
amount and any distance, as long as there was a minimum
of three units, and it became the only standard oil pattern
regulation.
The review of the three-unit rule is a continuation of the
USBC’s commitment to continually explore all facets in
bowling while thinking about the future of the sport.
“At this time, it makes sense to suspend the rule but con-
tinue to monitor leagues and competitions as the equipment
we use, and the lanes on which we compete, continue to
evolve,” USBC Equipment Specifications chair Andrew
Cain said. “A review of the current lane-dressing regulation
was simply the next logical phase of research and one with-
in which the applicability of the three-unit rule itself was
called into question. This process of constant inquiry and
ensuing research is central to maintaining the integrity of
our sport.”
With the suspension of the three-unit rule, local associa-
tions no longer will be required to submit an annual Lane
Dressing Inspection Report (LDIR) for its centers.
The research performed at the International Training and
Research Center in Arlington showed lane patterns are dras-
tically altered by the use of today’s bowling balls, and most
patterns likely do not comply with the three-unit rule by the
end of a league session.
USBC will continue to run Sport-compliant patterns for
its national events, such as the USBC Open and Women’s
Championships, the Junior Gold Championships and its

major short-duration events. USBC also will maintain the
Standard, Challenge and Sport lane conditions average con-
version charts, for those who wish to compete in leagues
and tournaments on challenging lane conditions.
The Equipment Specifications Committee also set the
specification for any hole drilled in a bowling ball.
Effective Aug. 1, 2020, drilled holes cannot exceed a
diameter of 1-9/16 inches and a hole cannot have a depth of
more than 4-1/2 inches. The specification includes holes in
which removable devices are used, though the holes size
specifically was set to allow all existing removeable devis-
es to remain.
Also, because any gripping hole that does not have the
thumb or fingers inserted into it throughout the approach
would be classified as a balance hole, which is not allowed
as of Aug. 1, 2020, any secondary hole drilled inside of a
gripping hole that is not intended for gripping purpose is
considered a void and not allowed, except for vent holes.
