polynomial equations in different disciplines through appropriate and accurate representations.

Learning Competencies (1st Quarter)

 Finds the sum of the terms of a given arithmetic sequence. (M10AL-Ic-2)

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a) determine the sum of the first n terms of a given arithmetic sequence;
b) solve problems involving arithmetic sequence; and
c) apply the concept of arithmetic sequence in daily life.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: The Sum of the First n Terms

III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
 Prayer
“Lord, we are gathered once again in your presence to start a new day. Bless our
teachers and fellow students as we go on with our studies. Give us strength and
knowledge o’Lord that we may learn well. Guide us throughout the day. This we
ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.
 Greetings
 Checking of Attendance
 Setting of Standards
B. Lesson Proper
 Pre-developmental Activity
1. Review
Oral Recitation on Arithmetic Sequence.

 Developmental Activity
1. Presentation (Lecture/Discussion)
Let us compute for the common difference by finding the difference
between two consecutive numbers.
70 – 20 = 50
120 – 70 = 50
170 – 120 = 50
So, there is a common difference or d, which is 50. Therefore, the
numbers follow an arithmetic sequence.
Now, the first term is 20. This is a1.
Let us add:
20 + 70 = 90
90 is the sum of the 1st two terms.
20 + 70 + 120 = 210
210 is the sum of the 1st three terms.
20 + 70 + 120 + 170 = 380
380 is the sum of the 1st four terms.
20 + 70 + 120 + 170 + 220 = 600
600 is the sum of the 1st five terms.
20 + 70 + 120 + 170 + 220+ 270 = 870
870 is the sum of the 1st six terms.

Each of these sums is called an arithmetic series. An arithmetic series is

the sum of the 1st n terms of an arithmetic sequence. In the example above,
90, 210, 380, 600, 870 and so on is an example of an arithmetic series.
𝑛 𝑛
The formula 𝑆𝑛 = 2 (𝑎1 + 𝑎2 ) 𝑜𝑟 𝑆𝑛 = 2 [2𝑎1 + (𝑛 − 1)𝑑]
where: n = number of terms
𝑎1 = 1st term
𝑎𝑛 = nth term
d = common difference
are the two equations used to find the sum of the 1st n terms in an
arithmetic sequence.
We follow the steps below in using the given equations.
Step 1 Determine what the given facts in the problem are. If the 1st and
𝑛
last terms are given, use 𝑆𝑛 = 2 (𝑎1 + 𝑎2 ). If the 1st term and the common
𝑛
difference are given, use 𝑆𝑛 = 2 [2𝑎1 + (𝑛 − 1)𝑑].
Step 2 Determine what is being asked for in the problem and write this in
arithmetic notation.
Step 3 Decide which formula to use in finding the unknown sum based on
the given facts or information.
Step 4 Substitute the given values in the formula and solve for the
unknown.

2. Unlocking of Difficulties
I. Find the sum of the terms of each finite sequence.
1. 1, 4, 7, 10
2. 3, 5, 7, 9, 11
3. 10, 5, 0, -5, -10, -15
4. 81, 64, 47, 30, 13, -4
5. -2, -5, -8, -11, -14, -17
II. Find the sum of the 1st 21 terms in an arithmetic sequence if the 1st term
is 7 and the last term is –53.

 Post-developmental Activity
1. Practice and Drill

Solve the problem below.

a. What is the sum of the 1st 32 terms in the arithmetic sequence if the
common difference is 3 and the 1st term is 7?
b. A wife earned P10,000.00 during her 1st year of working and receives
P300.00 more every year. She saves all her earnings because she
budgets her husband’s salary wisely. How much money will she have at
the end of 12 years?

2. Generalization
In Arithmetic Sequence you learned to generate patterns, determine the nth
term of a sequence, described a arithmetic sequence, and find its nth term,
determine the arithmetic means of an arithmetic sequence, find the sum of
the first n terms of an arithmetic sequence and solve real-life problems
involving arithmetic sequence.
IV. Evaluation
I. Use the appropriate formula in finding the sum of the 1st n terms of an arithmetic
sequence given the following.
1. 4, 1, -2, . .
2. 5, 9, 13, 17

V. Assignment
I. Find the sum of each of the following.
1. Integers from 1 to 50.
2. Odd integers from 1 to 100.
3. Even integers between 1 to 101.
4. First 25 terms of the arithmetic sequence 4, 9, 14, 19, 24, . .
