CHAPTER I

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter discussed the background of the study, the problem, the scope and

delimitation and the introduction of the research.

Introduction

Technology has been circulated all over the world. It includes machines like

computers and other gadgets. The common example of this is the smart phones. Anyone

can buy a brand new phone or a second hand because of different kinds of brands that

cost cheaper and affordable than others.

“Think before you click”. People nowadays are all digital native. Social media

Network plays an important role in everyone’s life. Using different websites like

Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Wattpad and Twitter, people can gain profit, additional

information, pass time, socialize with other people with similar interest and background

and express themselves through posting and blogging.

With the help of social media, there will be endless of possibilities for every

individual to connect and communicate with other people globally. Unlike in the past,

communication nowadays revolves around the social media world wherein in just one

click, all of your friends and all other netizens will get notified about it because of the

internet connection everyone has.

Hale (2015) explained that social media in its present form has been a relatively

short term even though you probably can’t imagine having without it now. Most people
7
define it as the ability to use the internet to share and communicate instantly. Year 1997

was the birth of social media and the first invented website was the “Six Degrees”

namedafter the six degrees of separation theory. In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg launched the

Facebook. The number one social media website today and it currently boasts over a

billion users.

Social network site (SNS) has become the most dynamic Web 2.0 application

which enables students not only to socialize with friends but also interact with lecturers.

The growing popularity of the sites is further influenced by the free access for whomever

that desire to interact with friends and lecturers with a view to generating collective

knowledge. (Hamat et al., 2012)

According to Camus (2017), in the digital shift, the Philippines has taken the

global lead in at least one measure: time spent on social media. The report, called Digital

in 2017, showed that Filipinos spent an average of 4 hours and 17 minutes per day on

social media sites such as Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter.

Teachers integrated the use of social media in the class to help the students

understand the topic in an easy way. They also asked their students to use their social

media accounts because they already send the pictures, documents, videos and other

things that the students need in their studies.

Social media provides too much stimulation and therefore can distract students

from completing their coursework (Hurt et al., 2012; Patera et al., 2008). Another reason

for this may be that students who spend more time on social media may have difficulty

balancing their online activities and their academic preparation.

8
Mehmood and Taswir (2013) noted that “the use of social media networks and the

Internet is one of the most important factors that can influence educational performance

of students positively or adversely.”

Social networking and media tools offer students the opportunity to communicate

with others, get in touch, access information from the internet, research and chat. Social

media can be used for educational purposes but it may also lead to addiction and

depression.

Using social media accounts, people can express their feelings and emotions

freely. Ramasubu (2015), stated that “Other risks of extensive social networking among

youth are loss of privacy, sharing too much information, and disconnect from reality.”

Perception is someone’s belief, insight, opinion, and the ability to understand something.

Heffner (2018) refers perception as an interpretation of what we take in through our

senses. Positive perceptions obtained from users of social networking sites i.e. effective

learning which has resulted in an easy learning climate among students (Mazer, et al.,

2010). Social media can influence the insights of a person positively or negatively

because of the different articles, post, and other opinions of people that they read.

Statement of the Problem

This study investigated on how social media influence the learnings of the

selected Senior High students of Dr. Pablito V. Mendoza Sr. High School.

Specifically, the researchers sought the answers for the following problems:

1. Why students use social media inside their classroom;

2. How social media influence the students’ learning;

3. Is there a difference between a higher achiever and lower achiever students when it

comes to the influence of social media towards their learning?

9
Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The researchers aimed to determine what are the influences of social media on

Senior High School students towards learning during the School Year 2017- 2018. They

also identified the target people who answered the prepared questionnaire. It involved 18

students from the Senior High School Department of Dr. Pablito V. Mendoza Sr. High

School. The Descriptive Survey Method would be used while conducting the said

activity. The respondents answered the questions given by the researchers. The influence

of social media on Senior High School students towards learning were answered through

a questionnaire made by the researchers.

Significance of the Study

The researchers aimed to widen their knowledge with regards to the influence of

social media on the perceptions of students towards learning. This research study

benefited the following:

Students. This research material was intended for those students who use social media as

a pass time, for school purposes and other use of different websites. And they would

understand if social media was really a helpful tool for them or not.

Parents. This research study helped the parents to track the usage of their child with

regards to social media.

Teachers. This research was designed for the current teacher of the Senior High School

Department to know if the integration of social media in their teaching strategies is

helpful on the Senior High School students’ academic performance or the traditional

teaching is better.

Future Researchers. This research aimed to help the future researchers to explore more

about this research.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter discussed the related literature, studies, theories and the definition of

terms about the influence of social media on the Senior High School students towards

learning that will support the entire research study.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Social Media

Social Networking started as a place to connect with your friends in an easy and

convenient way (Jackson, 2009). Social networking sites allow the individual in the

family to share their daily lives in a sure but public forums. Family members are able to

organize events. Relatives abroad can communicate and share things every time in their

own free time despite the fact that their geographical distance.

A Social networking site can be a good way to make connections with people

with similar interest and goals (Steve, 2008). Communication is one of the main things

why there are social networking sites, to gather information and to broaden their

knowledge. Since social networking sites is a huge place to gather information to what is

trending nowadays. (Green, 2008). Other things in the social media are a great chance to

gather ideas since those articles are specified (Green, 2008).

In a survey conducted by Bagget and Williams (2012), students agree that social

media is a means to connect between individuals and is used as means to share common

interests. Media represents useful tools for communication and education, and provides

an opportunity for networking in any profession. With time constraints and demanding

11
class schedules, social media helps students to multitask because they do not want to

spend time creating multiple messages.

Victoria Rideout states that, among the younger generation, the time they spend

on social media, what she calls ‘entertainment media’ is “more than twice the average

amount of time spent in school each year”. Using social media, students can multi-task

between all the different media they use. For example, they can be listening to music,

sending a tweet and also posting on Facebook. Rideout said that since social media is

seven days a week, unlike school or having a full-time job, over the years the amount of

time one could spend over the internet “has exploded” (Rideout, 2012, p. 5)

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Social Media

A review study from Nottingham Trent University (2017) looked back

over earlier research on the psychological characteristics, personality and social media

use. The authors conclude that “it may be plausible to speak specifically of ‘Facebook

Addiction Disorder’…because addiction criteria, such as neglect of personal life, mental

preoccupation, escapism, mood modifying experiences, tolerance and concealing the

addictive behavior, appear to be present in some people who use [social networks]

excessively.”

According to Walton (2017), there are five factors that affect our mental health.

One study a few years ago found that Facebook use was linked to both less moment-to-

moment happiness and less life satisfaction. Another study looked at how we make

comparisons to others posts, in “upward” or “downward” directions that can lead to

depressive symptoms. Followed by the study that shows social media use triggers

feelings of jealousy. Part of the unhealthy cycle is that we keep coming back to social
12
media, even though it doesn’t make us feel very good. Lastly, a study found that more

friends on social media don’t necessarily mean you have a better social life and it takes

actual social interaction (not virtual) to keep up these friendships.

According to Udorie (2015), ‟A new study has found that teenagers who engage

with social media during the night could be damaging their sleep and increasing their risk

of anxiety and depression. Teenagers spoke about the pressure they felt to make

themselves available 24/7 and the resulting anxiety if they did not respond immediately

to texts or posts. Teens are so emotionally invested in social media that a fifth of

secondary school pupils will wake up at night and log on, just to make sure they don’t

miss out.”

As many studies suggest (Ellefsen et al., 2016), ‟Social media has potential as an

educational tool that could improve student motivation and in-class participation levels.

However, use and implementation of social media in the classroom depends on both

student and instructor.”

Tapscott and Williams (2010) in their study showed how social network

applications can significantly improve student learning and knowledge acquisition,

enabling them mutual interaction, cooperation, active participation, sharing resources and

critical thinking. Social network/media technologies in this context include Blog, Wiki,

Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, online discussion forum and others.

Arnold and Paulus (2010), found that even when social media is used for

educational purpose, students incorporate the technology into their lives in a way that

may differ from the intentions of the course instructor.

Malaney (2005) found that some students in multiple studies in 2000 and 2003

reported that their grades had suffered as a result of too much time spent on social
13
media. Banquil et al., (2009) found evidence of a continuing drop of grades among

students because of using social networking.

According to Ahn (2011), “ Social media has many uses, from networking to

news to quality information but the concern is around whether these students are using

these social media platforms for all these reasons and whether these users are managing

to organize their time.”

(Valkenburg & Peter, 2009), “The longer use of the Internet was related to

increased depression, loneliness, and smaller social circles. The results suggest that

Internet use isolates individuals from their friends and family, and has a negative impact

on one's psychological well-being.”

14
Definition of Terms

Facebook depression defined as emotional disturbance that develops when preteens and

teens spend a great deal of time on social media sites is now a very real malady.

Social Media Marketing refers to the process of gaining traffic or attention through

social media site.

Social Networking started as a place to connect with your friends in an easy and

convenient way

Social networking sites allow the individual in the family to share their daily lives in a

sure but public forums.

Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) This theory attempts to predict deliberate behavior,

because behavior has the potential to be deliberate and planned.

CHAPTER III

METHODS OF RESEARCH

This chapter discussed the methods and techniques, population of the study,

research instruments, data gathering procedure, and data processing and statistical

treatment.

Methods and Techniques

Descriptive survey method was used while conducting this research as the

research suggest. Descriptive research describes what is. It involves the description,

recording, analysis, and interpretation of the present nature, composition or processes of

phenomena. The focus is on prevailing conditions, or how a person, group, or thing

behaves or functions in the present. It often involves some type of comparison or contrast

(Manuel and Medel, p. 25). This method is the most appropriate to use to analyze,

describe and understand the influence of social media on the perceptions of the student

towards learning.

Three main purposes of research are to describe, explain, and validate findings.

Description emerges following creative exploration, and serves to organize the findings

in order to fit them with explanations, and then test or validate those explanations

(Krathwohl, 1993). Many research studies call for the description of natural or man-made

phenomena such as their form, structure, activity, and change over time, relation to other

phenomena, and so on.

Primary sources of data were obtained from Senior High students of Dr. Pablito

V. Mendoza Sr. High School during the School Year 2017-2018, which were involved in

the study. Purposive or judgmental sampling method was used in this study.

Research Instruments

To gather all the data needed from the respondents, the researchers constructed a

checklist method that was approved by the OIC/Head Teacher III of Dr. Pablito V.

Mendoza Sr. High School. The first part was intended to know the student’s profile. The

second part was the checklist survey questionnaire that answers the questions of the

researchers.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers gave a letter request to their consultant, noted and approved by

the subject teacher for the students of Dr. Pablito V. Mendoza Sr. High School to be

surveyed. The researcher will personally deliver the letter request to all concerned for the

conduct of survey. In survey method research, participants answer questions administered

17
through interviews or questionnaires. After participants answer the questions, researchers

describe the responses given. In order for the survey to be both reliable and valid it is

important that the questions are constructed properly. Questions should be written so

they are clear and easy to comprehend. Many researchers prefer to use a Likert-type scale

because it’s very easy to analyze statistically. (Jackson, 2009, p. 89). checklist method

will be used.

To validate the answers of the students, the researchers observed the students first

before they gave the questionnaire.

Data Processing and Statistical Treatment

The data will be organized, collated, examined, and reviewed using the following

statistical procedures:

The influence social media on the Senior High School students towards learning

was answered through a checklist method made by the researchers.

CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter contains the results, analysis, and interpretation of data gathered

which helped in answering the research problems posed by the researchers. Previous

studies and literature consulted by the researchers served as the basis in analyzing and

interpreting the data gathered.

Part 1 consists of the general description of the respondent’s personal profile

consisting of the following variables: name, gender, section, age, birthdate and standing

in class.

Part 2 consists of a checklist that answers the questions formulated by the

researchers based on the related literatures and studies that is presented in the study.

25
CHAPTER V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter contains the salient results of the study, generalizations inferred from

the findings for each research problem listed in the first chapter, and recommendations

based on the significant findings and conclusions of the study.

Summary of findings

The following were the findings of the study based on the data collected:

1. Results of the study showed that all of the respondents have a social media

account of Facebook and Messenger. And the lowest number of person who used

these 3 social media accounts was Google, Gmail and Pixiv 1 person for each

account.

2. The results of the study showed that social media was used for communication

purposes. 16 respondents answered chatting; it is either with family, with friends

and other people. While 14 respondents answered that they are using social media

to communicate with their teachers and fellow students. But only one answered

that he/she used social media to make his/her assignment.

3. According to the results, the study showed that most of the students only talk with

their classmates and sometimes they do their homework when the teacher leaved

them.

4. The result of the study showed that the students used social media for

entertainment, information and educational purposes. The results were high and

half of them used it all. It means that they can be entertained while they are using

their social media for educational purposes.

26
5. The results showed that mostly, with honors students used social media that they

cannot even last a day without using it and they used it for their grades to increase

while students with non-honors answered that social media has been a hindrance

for them to study better.

Conclusion

Based on the findings, the following conclusions were drawn:

Social media has been used by the students for entertainment and for educational

purposes.

There is a difference between the achievers and non-achievers when it comes to

the influence of social media especially when it comes to balancing their social media

usage and their academic performances.

The use of social media is advantageous to students based on Table 8 as also

proven in the study of Ellefsen et al., 2016 that Social media has its potential as an

educational tool that could improve student motivation and in-class participation levels.

Recommendations

As the researcher observed, teachers let students used social media in their time

because it is where they can find the files and the information that they need for their

subjects but some of the students didn’t have internet connection, it is recommended that

they must have an internet connection for all of the students that can only be used for

academic purposes.

The non-achievers should develop their knowledge on using social media because

it can help them as they go on through the process of learning.

27
As the researchers observed, many of those students take the chance to open their

social media accounts like Facebook every time the teacher told them to use their

cellphones for school purposes. Instead of learning the topics on their subject, they

focuses on their notifications and the posts on their timeline. It is recommended that the

teachers should lessen the use of social media in schooling and always took an eye to

their students everytime they are told it to do so.

JOURNAL

Before doing the actual paper in Practical Research 1, Mrs. Ma. Teresita G.

Calapis told us to do the reporting before proceeding to the actual research process to

ensure the quality of ideas we were going to present. On the reporting, we discuss about

our research problem, specific problem, the strength and weaknesses of our group, and

the challenges we might encounter while doing the paper. We present it using a visual aid

and do the peer editing. The other groups also present their own and we also do the same

way.

After all the groups finished the reporting, we are on our way on making the

Chapter 1 of our research paper. We read related literatures to define Social Networking

as a part of our Introduction. It gives us a hard time finding related literatures because we

have no library in the school. But then, thanks with the help of the Internet, it helps us to

gather relevant related literatures, studies and theories. Upon collecting related literatures,

studies and theories, we do the referencing using the APA (American Psychological

Association) formatting.

It was a sunny day when Jhon Webb, Micaella and I did the Chapter 1 of

research. This chapter includes the introduction, statement of the problem, significance of

the study and scope and delimitation. We also do it in our house because we need to pass

it to Ma’am Calapis as soon as possible. For the review of the related literature to be

accomplished, I, as a leader asked my members to search for the related literature, studies

and theories about our topic. For the chapter 2 we’ve read the related literature from the

internet because we don’t have a library here in our school. We had a struggle finding

35
and choosing the right literature to be used. We also discussed the methods and what kind

of questionnaire we are going to use in chapter 3.

Last November we did the draft of our research problem including the general and

specific problem. We also made the statement of the problem.

After discussing on the Chapter I, we proceed on the Chapter II Review of the

Related Literatures which discussed the related literatures, studies, theories and the

definition of terms. We worked on this until the month of January. We also prepare for

the first defense that month which critiqued by the Junior High School teachers in Dr.

Pablito V. Mendoza Sr. High School.

January 2018 is our first defense. After that, the panels helped us to improve the

content of our research. For finding the answers to our questions in chapter 1, we gave a

checklist questionnaire to the Senior High Students of Dr. Pablito V. Mendoza Sr. High

School.

After the first defense we started to work on Chapter III, the Methods of

Research, which includes the methods and techniques, population of the study, research

instruments, data gathering procedure and the data processing and statistical treatment.

On the first day of our Practical Research 1, I do not know what is the meaning

and purpose why this subject is involve in the GAS Strand, but after our Practical

Research teacher Mrs. Ma. Teresita G. Calapis explain it to us, I know now that doing a

research is important by doing a research to the things you want to know. In the fast few

days after the discussion, our group tried to formulate problems that can be a good topic

on our research paper and we experience to be a good researcher.

36
My team leader assigned me to photocopy the survey form that is given to our

respondents. Every people have a different views and opinions, so the answers in the

survey form may be different from each other. On our first ever proposal defense, we

feel so nervous because we didn’t know what are the questions that the panel will give to

us and my heart beat so fast like “TUGTUGTUGTUGTUG”! But when the defense is

done, my nervousness fades away

While doing a research, it takes a process we should follow in order to make the

paper we are doing clear to understand. While doing it, we always give time to finish it

even after the school hours. Being removed to the group is the one which I experienced

because that time I’m not helping them. But now, on our final defense I will join the

group for the second time and I promise that I will now help my groupmates to finish and

present it to our very best. We are preparing for our Final Defense and we are waiting for

this for a long time and finally we will now be able to present it.

My team leader assigned me to look for some related literature, studies and

theories about social media. At first, I find it difficult to get the information that I need.

So I asked my co-members on how to get the RRL and they told me to go to google

scholar because there are many related literatures that I can get. I also helped my

members in doing the referencing and citations using APA style. I suffered a lot in doing

this because I’m not familiar with it but I still coped up with them. I helped in doing the

gathering of data and in interpretation.

In this subject, I learned how to be responsible. Like in the defense, you should

fight on what you believe as long as it is appropriate so that the panel will believe you on

what you are saying and for your paper to be approved.

37
I was assigned to print out the letter for our research adviser. After that, Peter and

I went to Ma’am Calapis to sign it. I also helped my members to look for the review of

the related literature for our topic. I find it difficult to choose what literature is

appropriate to use because I don’t know what to do but I manage to giveit to my

members. Before we present in our research defense, I memorized the assigned Rrl to

me that needs to be discussed. I felt so nervous that time that I stutter when I tried to

explain infront of the panels. It was our dismissal when my team leader asked me to

photocopy the questionnaire that will be used in data gathering. I also list down the

possible respondents that we need to complete our research paper.
