Art On The Vine’s Fifth Edition to Feature Black Female Artists

Annual Martha’s Vineyard Event Celebrates Artists of Color

country, showcasing up-and-coming visual artists working in various disciplines.

- The Guest Curator for Art on the Vine's Special Projects this year is Niama Safia Sandy, a New
York-based cultural anthropologist, curator, musician and essayist.

- Savage-Lewis Artist Residents, Tsedaye Makonnen, a multidisciplinary artist who exhibits

internationally and Ayana Evans to present new collaborative works completed on the Vineyard during
their stay this summer.

- Opening reception features BVLGARI Jewelry, to be worn by Art On The Vine Host Committee.

Art on the Vine (AOTV) is pleased to announce the selection of 18 Black female artists for the event's
fifth year. Art on the Vine presented by The Agora Culture is a three-day art exhibition highlighting
contemporary multicultural artists and educational panels for new and seasoned collectors. The exhibition
takes place at the distinguished Dr. Fisher House and Old Whaling Church in Edgartown, MA from
Saturday, August 10th - Wednesday, August 14th.

Since its inception in 2015, several thousand have attended Art on the Vine (AOTV) to consider the
works of over 40 contemporary multicultural artists who have gone on to exhibit and be acquired globally
and major encyclopedic institutions including: The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Whitney
Museum of American Art, LA County Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Smithsonian's National
Museum of African American History and Culture and The Studio Museum in Harlem.

cultural conversations, but who often don't receive the recognition and attention their art deserves,” said

artists, institutions, and the merely curious for this cultural explosion. This event introduces attendees to
the next wave of important artists and provides access to their artwork before it becomes out of reach.

Niama Safia Sandy, Guest Curator for Art on the Vine's Special Projects
The 2019 Guest Curator for Art on the Vine's Special Projects is Niama Safia Sandy, a New York-based
cultural anthropologist, curator, musician and essayist. Niama has convened programs, panels, led
discussions, and presented papers at the Museum of the City of New York, Prizm Art Fair, the
Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Creative Time Summit, Harvard University, Oberlin
College, and Rhode Island School of Design.

The Convening
August 12, 2019 at 10 am

AOTV released a call for papers, presentations and panels relating to Black women in art and the spaces
that they occupy. Authors of accepted papers will present their work during the Convening on Monday,
August 12, 2019. Submissions are from artists, curators, academics, social justice workers, among others.

Savage-Lewis Artist Residency

The Savage-Lewis Artist Residency, inspired by the collaborative nature of artists Augusta Savage and
Noman Lewis' time on Martha's Vineyard supports two artists of color from distinct practices who will
work both separately and collaboratively to create new artwork that will be featured at Art on the Vine's
fifth annual exhibition. This year's artists are Tsedaye Makonnen, a multidisciplinary artist who exhibits
internationally and Ayana Evans, a NYC based performance artist.

Admission to Art on the Vine is free. An optional donation to support the Savage-Lewis Residency
Program is welcome and 100% tax deductible through the Art on the Vine Foundation. 2019 Art on the
