The western alphabet, which is used in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Australia and New Zealand as well as in
Puntúa 1 sobre 1
other countries, originated in the middle east. The people who gave the world this alphabet were the
Phoneacians, a people who established colonies all over the Mediterranean, including Carthage in Africa and
Gades in Spain. In their alphabet, the letters were represented by little pictures which represented sounds. The
Phoneacian A was aelph, which means "bull". and it was made from a little picture of a bull's head. The letter B
was beth which meant "house", and showed the round-roofed buildings which you can still see today in Syria.
The Phoneacians had contact with another nation of sailors, the Greeks, with whom they fought and traded. The
Greeks also started to use the Phoneacian alphabet. They changed the names so aelph and beth became
alpha and beta. The shapes of the letters are the same but they have been turned sideways. If you know any
Greek, you can try turning the letters around again, and see how they look. You will see that the curve on the
right of the Greek A becomes the horns of a little bull.
Of course, the first two letters of the alphabet give it its name. Over the years there have been changes. Latin
developed an alphabet with some different letters to the Greeks, and other letters have been added since. But
really westerners are using the same system of writing which has served them so well for thousands of years.
Seleccione una:
A. Latin used exactly the same letters as Greek.
B. the name of the alphabet was given after the last letters of it.
C. the current alphabet was created by the Greeks.
D. westerns have been using the same alphabet for years.

thousand of years.

Pregunta 9 Read the text and answer the question appropriately.
Finalizado BUTTERFLIES
Puntúa 1 sobre 1 The butterfly is an insect. Butterflies are noted for their wings, which are often colorful and bright.
Butterfly wings are a bit like bird wings. Bird wings are made of feathers, but butterfly wings are made
of tiny overlapping scales. The wings are colored in various patterns. Some butterfly wings look
iridescent (changing rainbow colors, depending on the light) because of the way light hits the scales.
Butterflies have an interesting life cycle. They start as eggs. When they are born, they are what we call
caterpillars. This is the larval stage for the caterpillar. The caterpillars then move into a cocoon,
becoming what we call a chrysalis. This is the pupal stage. When the insect comes out of the cocoon,
we call it a butterfly. This is the adult stage for the butterfly. These clear stages of changing on the way
to adulthood are called metamorphosis. Many animals go through metamorphosis, but the butterfly’s
changes are more dramatic than most. Butterflies can be found almost all over the world. There may be
as many as twenty thousand different species of butterflies. Butterflies usually eat flower nectar.
Because of this, they are important to the life cycle of many flowers. Butterflies also need minerals,
which they usually get from water found in dirt and sand. They reach their adult stage in the summer.
Some butterflies migrate. The Monarch butterflies migrate about 3000 miles (4800 km) every year.
They fly between Mexico and California.

I had intended to discover, by taking a swim myself, why anyone would want to swim in such cold water.
However, in the end, I decided to ask people instead. Peter Smith has been a swimmer here for three years,
coming every morning before work. "It's wonderful on a cold winter morning", he says, "I thought it would make
me healthier and haven't been ill once since I started".
All the swimmers here say the same thing. They all feel fitter. However, not everyone agrees with them. Some
doctors say it helps fight illness, while others say it could be dangerous, especially for your heart.
I asked Peter what they did on the days when the pool was frozen. "That's easy", he said. "There's a place in

to swim there once just to see what it was like, but I found that it was impossible to break throught the ice.

Pregunta 14 BREAKING THE ICE
Finalizado Michael Sharp visits an outdoor pool.
Puntúa 1 sobre 1
It's just before 7 a.m. and I'm at an outdoor swimming pool in London, where the temperature the water is only
11 degrees above freezing! Amazingly, there are already eight people swimming.
"There's a place in
the middle where the ice is thin and easy to break. You have to avoid the sides where the ice is thicker. I did try
to swim there once just to see what it was like, but I found that it was impossible to break throught the ice.
I would like to be able to say that I too dived happily into the water and swam a couple of hundred metres. But
the truth is, fearing the worst, I walked very carefully into the pool, stood there almost in shock and then got out
again after 30 seconds before I became a block of ice!

Pregunta 16 BREAKING THE ICE
Finalizado Michael Sharp visits an outdoor pool.
Puntúa 1 sobre 1
It's just before 7 a.m. and I'm at an outdoor swimming pool in London, where the temperature the water is only
11 degrees above freezing! Amazingly, there are already eight people swimming.
"There's a place in
the middle where the ice is thin and easy to break.

B. My doctor has advised me not to go swimming there
