as peripatéticas.
XVIII.Escrever aqui o
resumo do artigo, em português.
Abstract – Until the middle of the 18th century, the theories of the light taught at the
universities and schools in Portugal were, with rare exceptions, the peripatetic theories.
Only after the Reform made by Marquis of Pombal in 1772, the study of modern science
was officially established in Portugal. Since then, the modern theories of light,
especially the Newtonian emission theory, got an important number of followers,
although other movements including eclectic movements were still relevant within the
Portuguese scientific culture. In this paper some of the cultural, political and religious
factors, partially responsible for the late introduction of modern science and theories,
will be identified and briefly discussed. The concepts about the nature of light,
expressed by known and influent authors and by others exemplifying the state of the
Portuguese scientific culture of the 18th century, will be presented.Write here the
abstract of the paper, in English.
