“Black in History”
Abayomi Kalaote
Age 16
Way back in history there were people, our people, they were slaves.
Taken from their homelands,
Forced to work,
Stripped of their identity,
and given false names.
Tormented harshly until their spirits were broken,
And psalms to God were the only words spoken.
Way back in history these people, our people, were ready to fight.
They stood to unite,
And demand equal rights!
Carried a load on their backs, and only to be beat?
No they weren’t going down, they wouldn’t take a defeat.

together in a way that supports their economic, spiritual and emotional empowerment. By em-
powering themselves, women can change their relationships, their circumstances, their commu-
nity and the world. The group holds a breakfast meeting every other month on the 4th Saturday,
from 10 am to 1 pm at Soul's Restaurant on the corner of 64th and Foothill, in Oakland, CA. They
have motivational and inspirational speakers and a network sharing table for business and com-
munity information.

YJI Through the Walls serves youth who currently have an incarcerated parent. Through the
Walls is a comprehensive year-long mentoring program developed to meet the unique needs of
youth in this population. Parental incarceration has a devastating effect on families, especially
children. YJI mentors provide support during these difficult periods to help them build healthy
relationships that support them to reach their goals. The program serves youth on probation, de-
tention or placement. Youth must commit to 1 year, be between 11 and 18 years old, and reside
in Alameda or San Francisco County.

8711 MacArthur Boulevard, Oakland, CA 94605

Since opening in 2005, Youth UpRising (YU) has gone from a barebones operation to a bustling,
25,000 square foot high-tech youth leadership development Center. YU serves over 4,000 Ala-
meda County residents between the ages of 13 and 24, primarily youth of color from low-income
neighborhoods in East Oakland. Its mission is to build healthy, economically robust communities
by harnessing the leadership of young people as agents of social change. The resource-rich space
and services that YU offers counteracts a long legacy of disinvestment in East Oakland’s working
-class neighborhoods, where poverty is entrenched and needs have gone unmet for generations.
