“Black in History”
Abayomi Kalaote
Age 16

Lighthouse Community Charter School

East Oakland Youth Development Center

Way back in history there were people, our people, they were slaves.
Taken from their homelands,
Forced to work,
Stripped of their identity,
and given false names.
Tormented harshly until their spirits were broken,
And psalms to God were the only words spoken.

Way back in history these people, our people, were ready to fight.
They stood to unite,
And demand equal rights!
Carried a load on their backs, and only to be beat?
No they weren’t going down, they wouldn’t take a defeat.

Way, way back, in a time called history.

These people, our people, did everything they could to prove they were
able.
Went from building, to living in, to owning a stable.
They lived for a purpose and veered away from all drama;
Paved the way for a man like Obama.

You see, our people are the backbone of America.

Their the reason why we have freedom in this Era.
So the next time you take a look back in history,
It wont be long before you realize….you’ve taken a look
Black in history.

“Citizens of Oakland”
Abayomi Kalaote
Age 16
East Oakland Youth Development Center

Straight up and down man I never had a father.

Growing up is hard gotta be the oldest daughter.
Missing out on a father figure led me to use my womanly figure,
That’s how I got my boo.
He was lookin good and he thought I was too;
So we went to his house and we did what we do!

But then I think, and now I stop.

How could my life just KABOOM and KURPLOP.
My momma’s gonna hate me,
Cause im 16 with a baby,
And now ―ol’dude‖ is acting shady!!
Its so unreal.
All the single mothers, y’all know the deal.

But if you think about it…Just think about it.

Can’t really blame the father when his life is ―out of order‖
Drug dealing on the corner made a dollar;
from a quarter.
It was all good til he heard BANG BANG!
And its sad to say he never made it out the game.

Well were im from it happens way too often.

A mother crying tears, her son laying in a coffin.
Cant deal with the pain of loosing her first child.
Every few minutes gotta hit a Black & Mild.
Da homies rock his tee, and reminisce when they smokin….

These are the tales of the citizens of Oakland.

Mommy keep your head up never let up raise your baby

Sometimes you get fed up and you feel like going crazy.
Your son may go to space and your daughter may cure AIDS
Show your children the sky is the limit at an early age
Please mommy keep your head up never let up stay strong.
Forgive but don’t forget the people that have ever done you wrong.
Keep your pupils on God because he’s with you all along.
You may be the inspiration your child needs to make an award winning
poem.
Mommy keep your head up please don’t about your child.
Love him unconditionally guaranteed he’ll make you proud.
Nine months of pain would end with everlasting smiles.
I see the twinkle in your eyes when people say she has your mouth.
You’re a beautiful queen with or without a wedding ring.
Be confident it’s your obligation to raise a king.
The seed was planted be the nutrients make your child grow strong.
Shower it with love and affection guidance and protection.
Forgive but don’t forget the people that has ever did you wrong.
Mommy the future is in your hands prepare a better tomorrow.
Please make sure your child life isn’t filled with sorrow.
Sometimes you get fed up and you feel like going crazy.
Mommy keep your head up never let up raise your baby.
