There was one unique escape line that did not go into
Spain. This was the line code-named Shelburne, a name
whose derivation is now lost. The Shelburne line had what
were called collection points at Paris and Rennes. From
these points escapees were moved to various ports on the
English Channel, where they were picked up and taken by
motor gunboats—similar to American torpedo or PT boats—
to Falmouth or Weymouth in southern England.
The Shelburne line was started late in the war, but it
handled several hundred escapees successfully. It was
especially noteworthy for the bravery of the British gunboat
crews who came ashore and collected their charges from the
French ports right under the German guns.
