Phocus 2.

5 for Windows

Hasselblad A/S – June 16, 2010

This is a feature release of Phocus.

Installation

Run PhocusInstaller.exe to install Phocus. This installer will automatically detect the operating system,
and install the required components. If the automatic installation procedure described above fails, use the
manual installation procedure described in the setup.txt document.

It is recommended to keep the windows installation up-to-date with the latest window updates. Phocus
require a particular update for Windows XP SP2. Its name is "XMLLite for Windows XP (KB915865)" for
Windows XP SP2 32 bit, or "XMLLite for Windows XP x64 Edition (KB915865)" for Windows XP SP2 64 bit.
XMLLite is included is Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista. The installation kit includes XMLLite for XP in
English. If you are using a different language, please use windows update, or read the setup.txt.

Compatibility

Phocus is supported on Windows XP (SP2 or later), Vista (SP1 or later) and Windows 7 in 64 or 32bit
mode. Phocus is optimized for best performance in 64bit mode.

To ensure a good user experience, it’s recommended that your system at least conform to the
requirements described in this document. Phocus may run on older and/or other operating systems and
hardware. Hasselblad will however not guarantee correct operation or performance with these
configurations, and consequently cannot offer technical support for these environments. This as well
applies to operating Phocus on emulated operating systems like Parallels or VMWare. Phocus for
Windows will run via Boot Camp (Mac).

Supported products
All FireWire based Hasselblad camera units are supported.
Capture or display of micro-step images is not supported.
Scanner 3F files are not supported.
3F files generated by Phocus are not backward compatible with FlexColor!

If you need to run a Hasselblad product on computer hardware that does not satisfy the above
requirements, please consider using our FlexColor software, which is still fully supported.

System Requirements

Below you will find three different performance configuration examples. Please be aware that these
examples are general and may vary depending on the manufacturer of the actual hardware and the
operating system they run on. They may be used only as a basic guideline for configuring a computer to
a given performance. To ensure a good user experience in Phocus, we recommend that your system at
least conform to the “Acceptable Performance” example described below.
Recommended PC Configurations
Acceptable performance (Using 22” monitor or less)
Core 2 Duo (or AMD equivalent), 2GB memory, 512MB video RAM.

Good performance
Core 2 Quad (or AMD equivalent), 4GB memory, 512MB video RAM.

High Performance
Core i7 (or AMD equivalent), 8GB memory, 1GB video RAM.

Non-Recommended PC Configurations
Phocus will run using older and/or other configurations than the listed examples above. Hasselblad will
however not guarantee correct operation or performance with these configurations. Older Pentium
machines and/or main boards with on-board graphics adapters are generally not recommended, as they
provide less performance for Phocus to perform well.

Graphics card
At least 512MB of video RAM is required. Unlike older graphics applications such as Photoshop and
FlexColor, Phocus utilizes the processing power available in the graphics card to provide precise real time
feedback for adjustment changes. Therefore, just as with Aperture, the viewer performance is very much
dependent on the quality of the graphics adapter. In general, more video RAM is better, especially if you
plan to work with 30” displays or dual monitor setups. Not all graphic adapters are supported! As a
minimum Direct X 9.0c compatible graphic adapters are required, yet not all are guaranteed to work.
Generally speaking we recommend using either Nvidia or ATI chip-set adapters, where Intel, Matrox and
others are usually not performing sufficient with Phocus.

CPU
While viewer performance is very dependent on GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) power, the CPU (Central
Processing Unit) will have the most influence on functions such as export where speed benefits from
higher CPU clock rate (GHz) and maximum core utilization. It should also be mentioned that performance
of the viewer at 100% and above is also CPU core and clock rate dependent. The above performance
examples are not specific in regards to CPU speed (GHz). In general,- the higher the speed of the CPU
and the higher amount of cores you have, the higher performance you will achieve.

Memory (RAM)
2GB is acceptable but 4GB (or more) is a better choice especially if you are running Photoshop at the
same time. Phocus for Windows will when running on a 64-bit operating system, take full advantage of
more than 2GB - which may improve performance when browsing folders with a large number of images.

Functionality Level

Phocus 2.5 for Windows is almost at the same functionality level as Phocus 2.5 for the Mac platform. The
Windows version does not support 3 rd party file formats and 3f and 3fr files as an overlay image.
New Features

Multiple color readouts

A new picker tool has been added that let's you position color readout points in the image. You can use
either the new button next to the hand tool button or the 'i' short cut to activate the tool - hereafter
clicking in the image will place a new readout point or move an existing point around. The active point
can be deleted by pressing delete. Note that in order to move or delete points the tool must be active.
The channels displayed will correspond to the currently selected readout options controlled by the popup
found on the far right of the Viewer Toolbar.

Print of full image

In the print dialog you can now select between 2 modes - either Contact Sheet (which was the only
option until now) or Full Image. When full image is selected a full quality print will be done. In this mode
there's a couple of new options available. Expand to fit will expand the image so that the full printable
area of a page is covered - this is typically useful when using a printer that supports borderless printing.
Auto rotate will rotate images in order to fit the current page layout. Furthermore page attributes are
now located in the main print dialog.

Improved low-res preview sharpness

Using the lens distortion filter will now have minimal effect on preview sharpness. Also in Preferences you
will find a new Extra Large option for the embedded preview size.
Using a larger preview size will result in better quality viewer previews when zoomed under 13%, but do
note that it will also add to the file size and can affect performance.
Therefore selecting Extra Large is only recommended if you're running on fairly modern hardware.

Slideshow
This command has been added to the Image menu - it will display a slide show of the currently selected
(non 3FR) files. It is also available from the toolbar - in existing installations you will need to either load
one of the Standard Mode or Light Mode layouts or customize your toolbar to add the slideshow button.

Keywords
This tool has now been made resizable and it will use a tabbed mode whenever necessary. Also you can
now export and import keywords.

Folder rename
You can now rename folders via the File Browser view – use the popup menu and select rename.

Capture info in viewer top bar

ISO, aperture, shutter and lens info for the currently displayed image will now be shown in the viewer
bar.

Thumbnail option changes

The upper right corner thumbnail options view has been abandoned. Instead you now have a popup
menu located at the right side of the thumbnail bar. From this you can control all the same options that
were available from the old options window and also some new functionality has been added. You can
now filter by file type so that you can select whether to display 3F, 3F multishot or 3FR files. Also you can
select whether to add a sort control and an approval filter control to the toolbar itself in order to give
quick access to this functionality.
Known Issues
Due to memory issues on 32bit Windows systems, Phocus may seem unstable.

Low resolution view of existing images with negative EV

If you have non base ISO 3F files produced with previous versions of Phocus prior to 2.0 or FlexColor and
use a larger amount of negative EV correction on these (typically more than 1 f stop) you may see
highlights going magenta in the low-res viewer preview and in thumbnails. Once you zoom in to 25% or
more the problem goes away. NB! This issue does not affect exports of images.
You can in fact get rid of the problem by adding any amount of highlight recovery and saving
adjustments for the image. This will trigger a recalculation of the embedded uncorrected preview and
once this is done highlights will be treated correctly with negative EV also when not using highlight
recovery.
