points) for a team that averaged 48.5
points and yielded 43.
However, Elwer expects senior Tyler
Bergfeld (2.0 points) to come back for
his third year of varsity, along with fel-
low seniors AJ Klausing, Alex Recker
and Derek Klaus, who all earned limited
minutes a year ago, to be major cogs in
this year’s rotation.
“What we’ll do is get the basketball
in their hands as quickly as possible once
we give them some time off. We have
to get them to do the skill things
— like shooting, passing, ballhandling
— as soon as possible,” Elwer added.
“We won’t be able to focus as much
on the X’s and O’s because if you don’t
have those skills, it’s awful hard to do the
rest. We’ll have to work our way into the
season and add to our game plan as we
go along.
“Also, early-season conditioning will
be a priority.”

he added. “However, I don’t think we
have the true post or center we had last

That can open up the lane for drives to

easy layups; it also gives us versatility in
our lineup on both ends of the floor.

Lady Green cagers loading up for 2010-11

By JIM METCALFE

OTTOVILLE — Ottoville’s girls bas-
ketball team made it all the way to
the Division IV regional semifinals last
winter before suffering
its first loss — to Fort
Loramie.
That 23-1 team (7-0
as champions of the
Putnam County League)
only had two seniors.
Now, with six letter-
winners back and a handful of promising
newcomers to fill in the blanks, 19th-
year head coach Dave Kleman has higher
expectations for his Lady Green heading
into 2010-11.
“With all those veterans and a number
of girls off an 18-2 junior varsity team
ready to step in, we have a lot of qual-
ity depth. That should help us the most
on the defensive end,” Kleman, who has
a 331-91 mark coming into the season,
began. “We expect to be a very good
defensive team and we want to push the
ball up the floor. I see us as a team that

Von Sossan nears 300th varsity win

FORT JENNINGS — Long-time

Fort Jennings boys cage coach John
Von Sossan lost
a trio of 3-year
varsity lettermen
— and 2-year
starters — from
However, all
is not lost as he
brings back four
lettermen —
including two starters from an 11-12
team — for an overall young team in
2010-11.
“We look to compete. We do
have four players with varsity expe-
rience to build around,” Von Sossan,
beginning his silver season as head
coach with a 293-250 mark, said.
“We should have some quickness
and our inside game should be a

Lady Musketeers turn to guard play in 2010-11

By JIM METCALFE
jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com

FORT JENNINGS — The Fort

Jennings girls basketball team won’t
have a lot of size for the 2010-11
campaign.
What the Lady Musketeers will
have is a lot of speed, especially on
the perimeter, and potentially a
deep bench to compensate for that
lack of size.
“We won’t have a true center or
post this year. What we do have is
a good amount of experience and
an expected strong backcourt,”
fifth-year coach Matt Myerholtz
explained. “We bring back four
letterwinners from last year (a 13-9
season, including 3-4 in the com-
petitive Putnam County League for
a fourth-place finish) but we have
three letterwinners to replace.”
The major cog that used up her
eligibility last winter was 4-year
varsity player Katie Von Lehmden
(12.9 points, 4.0 assists per game)
but a pair of 3-year players: Leah
Kimmet (6.4 markers, 5.0 boards)
and Stacie Chandler (4.2 counters,
4.0 caroms); also graduated.
Myerholtz, who begins the cam-
paign with an overall mark of 33-53,
does return that quartet of veter-
ans from last season: fourth-year
senior Lauren Norbeck (5-7 guard;
9.3 markers, 5.7 boards), third-year
senior Taylor Wallenhorst (5-7
guard; 8.0 markers, 4.0 boards); sec-

in 2010-11 but only welcomes back
two returning players from a season
ago, a duo that helped the Lancers
average 49.1 points and give up 60
points per.
There are four keys for us to be
successful this season,” Welch noted.
“We have to play solid defense, hit
the open shots that present them-
selves, get solid post play — despite
a lack of overall size — and get
out on the fast break and utilize our
strengths there.”
The two veterans Welch figures
to build around are junior Sloan

junior Clayton Longstreth (6-1 wing/

Lady Lancers a veteran crew for 2010-11

By JIM METCALFE

RURAL MIDDLE POINT — The

Lincolnview girls basketball team will
have a new man at the end of the bench
in 2010-11 in first-year varsity coach
Dan Williamson.
That is about the only thing that
will be new for the Lady Lancers in
the upcoming sea-
son as five starters
and two other let-
terwinners are back
for Williamson off
last season’s 4-17
edition under then-
coach Dave Evans.
Williamson served eight years as an
assistant coach.
“With seven returning letterwin-

feel very excited about the season,”
Williamson noted. “The girls have

season, the Lincolnview wrestling unit
had 20 participants.
This season, for
various reasons,
including graduation
and defections, head
coach Curtis Miller
will only have 11 to
choose from.
Still, he has hopes for his Lancer
crew despite having to void at least
three weight classes every match.
“I have a very well-rounded team
overall, despite the lack of numbers.
If we can keep everyone healthy and
strong, it looks to be a promising year,”
Miller said.
It helps to have a solid individual or
two to build around and count on, such
as what Miller has in a pair of district
qualifiers: 4-year senior Chris Boroff
and junior Kevin Markward.
This unit will also be a young one
with only one other 12th-grader on the
roster: 3-year veteran DJ Gaskill.

Kortokrax back for more with Kalida boys

KALIDA — Legendary Kalida boys

basketball coach Richard Kortokrax just
can’t get enough of coaching boys bas-
ketball at Kalida.
He is back for his 51st season of
varsity coaching, starting his 36th year
at the helm of the
Wildcats with an
overall mark of
805-318 (72%),
580-218 at Kalida
(73%).
He expects to
add even more
to the tradition
he has built up at
Kalida as he only lost two players from
last winter’s Division IV regional-final
team that finished 21-3, claiming an
unbeaten Putnam County League title at
7-0 — his 22nd PCL title — and his 10th
district title.
He must replace PCL Player of the
Year Jordan Basinger (4-year letterman)
and 2-year letterman Michael Bockrath.

Huber takes over LadyCat cagers

By JIM METCALFE
jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com

KALIDA — The Kalida girls basket-

ball team will have a much different look
from 2009-10, from the end of the bench
to the rotation.
Seven seniors that graduated from
coach Karl Lammers’ last team took 22
letters with them and left new coach Adam
Huber with some rebuilding to do.
However, the coach who has been an
assistant coach with the LadyCats the last
four seasons, won’t have a completely
empty cupboard as five letterwinners are
back for 2010-11.
“I have never felt that I could fault the
team’s effort during practices and games.
They are a group of girls that is always
working together to try and improve as
a team and as individuals,” Huber noted.
“We lost a lot of experience in those seven
letterwinners when they graduated, so it is
pretty obvious that we are inexperienced
at the varsity level. Many of the girls have
had little to no significant varsity court
time and it is going to take us some time
to adjust to the speed and physicality of the
game. We are also going to be looking for
a player or two to step up offensively and
help take the burden solely off of Emily
Turnwald’s shoulders, especially with
teams game-planning to take her away.” Jim Metcalfe photo

By JIM METCALFE

SPENCERVILLE — Spencerville’s
boys cage team fielded a very under-
classmen-laden team in 2009-10.
Now, 9th-year head man Kevin
Sensabaugh (98-75 overall mark)
hopes to reap the dividends of playing
all those youngsters a year ago.
That team finished 5-16, 5-4 in the
Northwest Conference.
Five returning starters and three
other lettermen are back for another
go-round.
“After fielding a very young and
inexperienced team last year, we are
looking to benefit from the experi-
ence the returnees gained. We have
everyone back from our roster of last
season and we are looking forward to
a solid year,” Sensabaugh observed.
“We have six different players that
started for us at various times last
year and all are back. We are a year
older and a year more experienced and
that will help us this year. We had a
solid off-season this summer and that
should also help us as we head into
this season.”
This year’s group has three senior
returning starters: third-year starter

caroms) and third-year lettermen

Lady Bearcats trying 3rd coach in 3 years

By JIM METCALFE
jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com

SPENCERVILLE — For the third season

in a row, a new coach will be on the end of
the bench of the Spencerville girls basketball
team.
Two seasons ago, it was Mary Ann
Swartz.
Last season, it was Darren Sharp.
In 2010-11, it will be Katie Fisher, a 2005
graduate of Lima Central Catholic and a 2009
alumnus of The Ohio State University, at the
helm.
She has her work cut out for her, trying to
retool a unit that lost six letterwinners from
last winter’s 3-18 unit (1-8 in the Northwest
Conference).
She will try to do it on the defensive end
first and then go from there.
“Our team will have a defensive focus,
hoping to cause turnovers and score our
points in transition. We expect that to be a
strength,” Fisher said.
Four veterans return from 2009-10, led by
third-year varsity players in seniors Brittany
Kill and Claire McConnell (12), along with
second-year juniors Cortney Miller and
Jennifer Post.
However, with the graduation of six let-
terwinners from a year ago, led by 3-year
post players Devon Keysor and Amanda
Brenneman; 2-year guards Brooke Moeller
and Alison Moeller; and 1-year performers
Vanessa Barnes and Andrea Lee; this group

Thompson expects more athletic Bulldogs

By JIM METCALFE
jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com

ELIDA — Denny Thompson’s Elida boys basket-

ball unit finished 13-10 last winter, including making
it to the Division II district finals before faltering.
However, his Bulldogs finished 8-1 in the ultra-
competitive Western Buckeye League, which gives
him high hopes for 2010-11 as he brings back two
starters and a sub from that club.
He begins the season with a 4-year head varsity
coaching mark of 43-48 after putting in his dues as
an assistant coach for two decades.
“We’re a little deeper this year and I feel we’re
very athletic overall. We also shoot the ball well
and we execute well in half-court sets,” Thompson
began. “Our offense is basically what we term a
swing set; we use many verbals and offer our players
a lot of options. Defensively, we use a nice combi-
nation of man and zone and do extend the floor at
times; we might more this year.”
The two starters back are 6-4, 190-pound senior
forward Alex McAdams (third-year) and third-year
junior point guard Reggie McAdams (6-6, 185),
Thompson figures both of them are capable of
earning all-WBL and even all-state honors. Senior
Andrew Clevenger (6-1, 165, guard) came off the
Elida 2010-11 boys basketball team
bench a year ago and is set to earn his third varsity Jim Metcalfe photo
letter.
“Reggie is the returning WBL Player of the Year.
Alex brings an inside presence we need,” Thompson The 2010-11 Elida boys basketball varsity unit has, front row, left to right, manager Isaac Smith, Anthony Sumpter,

Stetler heads up Lady ’Dawg cagers

By JIM METCALFE

ELIDA — Deb Steler, a long-time

coach in the Lincolnview girls basketball
program, gets the opportunity to head up
her first varsity program as the new coach
for the Elida girls cage team, replacing
Steve Fersch.
She inherits a 7-14 team from 2009-
10, finishing 3-6 in the Western Buckeye
League.
Stetler coached at Lincolnview from
1984-87 and 1993-99 as a junior varsity
coach for the Lancers; 1999-2006 as an
assistant varsity coach and for the junior
high at Lincolnview from 2006-08. She
was a volunteer coach at Elida from
2008-09.
She gets back five part/full-time
starters from last year in senior Amber
Sadler (8.6 counters, 12.1 caroms per
game; 3rd year), senior Julie Stirn (5.3
counters, 4.3 boards; 3rd year), senior
Kaylyn Duffy (4.4 points, 2.0 steals; 3rd
year), senior Kayla Smith (4.3 mark-
ers, 4.3 boards 3rd year) and classmate
Lindsay Peters (3.4 markers), a 4th-year

Numbers game a concern for Elida’s Bowers

By JIM METCALFE
jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com
ELIDA — F. Kevin Bowers begins his
20th season as head coach of the Elida var-
sity wrestling program.
He has some plusses and minuses but is
facing as numbers game as he only has 13
boys ready to go for 2010-11.
“That is one of our weaknesses; we
lack depth in the lineup. That always
seems to be a problem because we don’t
host the transition from middle school to
high school. This passage doesn’t develop
a long list of mentally-tough athletes,”
Bowers explained.
He does have nine lettermen back from
last winter’s 9-8 season (4-5 in the Western
Buckeye League) that earned sixth place
in the WBL tournament and seventh at
sectionals.
That group is led by sophomore 103-
pound state alternate Austin Arbogast (112

trict, sectional champion and third place at
WBL) and district qualifiers in third-year
