Harry Lee Hovis
Harry Lee Hovis, 57, passed away in Moline,
Ill., surrounded by his loving family after a long,
courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday,
Nov. 17, 2010.
He was born to Cecil and Murriel (DeWeese)
Hovis on Feb. 2, 1953, in Ypsalanti. He graduated
from Morley Stanwood High School and had been
a welder for most of his adult life. His positive at-
titude was an inspiration to many and his desire
to help his fellow man was unwavering. Harry was
a true family man, always helping to plow out his
loved ones drives in the winter, playing with his
grandchildren or helping his numerous friends
with their projects. He loved hunting and fishing
with his grandchildren and was an avid cook.
Harry, who never met a stranger, will be fond-
ly remembered for his outgoing personality.
He is survived by his daughters, Cheryll Ho-
vis of Morley, Mandy Hovis of Grand Rapids and
Dawn Hovis of Stanwood; grandchildren, Lexia
Hovis, Damiane Lawton, Aprilann Welch, Ash-
ley Welch; great-granddaughter, Olivia Romero;
sisters, Alice (David) Cox of Moline, Ill., and Di-
ana (Mike) Curtis of Spring Lake; brothers, Cecil
(Barb) Hovis of Milan, Ill., John (Jennie) Ho-
vis of Wichita Falls, Texas, Tom (Diane) Hovis
of Moorehead, Ky., and Gary (Cindy) Hovis of
Michigan; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces,
great-nephews and cousins that he loved greatly.
Special friends Jackie Maranda, Kate Smith and
Pastor Chris Cain, all of the Quad City, Ill., Jay
Griffes of Morley, Dale Peck of Coopersville, Artie
Freiburger of Newaygo, and too all of his friends
close to home and far away.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Satur-
day, Nov. 27, 2010 at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral
Home in Big Rapids.
Memorial contributions in Harry’s name may
be given to the family for a trust that will be es-
tablished for his grandchildren. Checks should
be directed to his sister Alice Cox whom Harry
named as trustee.

and delivery. They work close-

On November 10, the Crime Watch Programs of Big Prairie, Ashland and Ensley Center Townships took part in a tour of Christmas Party Sale

The evening began with a dinner that was attended by an estimated 70 to 80 residents of these townships. At 6 p.m. all of
us proceeded to White Cloud. Once there, we were met with more residents who did not attend the dinner. As we entered the FREE Presents To Be Given Away!

The tour started out at the Control Room, which monitors the inmates in the cell blocks. Lt. Greer explained all of the
procedures, why the cell blocks have TV’s, why inmates are allowed to make phone calls using pay phones, and how meals are
brought in. We learned about the federal inmate program, how this helped build the facility and how this jail is self supporting.
Next stop was the Visitor’s Room where we were told how the inmates visited with family and friends via a monitor and
phone system. We then proceeded to see the reception area, offi ces, interview room, evidence room, conference room, offi cer’s

The evening ended with cake, coffee, and great prizes were given away in a drawing. It was a very informative and inter-

When word got around that retired math teacher Randy Fisher died
on Saturday, November 13, shock and disbelief were shared emotions,
followed by sadness. Randy retired in 2009 from a 34-year teaching
career. Many believed his good health would lend him lots of years to
enjoy retirement. He was a great role model to students and staff.
On the same day of Randy’s death, Mark Simons, the former
principal of the high school, had a massive heart attack leaving him
in a coma. He was taken off life support on Tuesday, November 16,
leaving family and friends to grieve his loss. Mark was with Tri County
for 12 years. He saw the Class of 2010 graduate before taking the job as
superintendent of Mesick Consolidated Schools.
Both men will be missed by their family, friends, and the
community.
Independent Bank will continue The School-Bank Partnership
with Sand Lake Elementary. For the past 13 years, Independent Bank
associates have volunteered their time to help select and train students
at Sand Lake Elementary to run a simulated bank at the school.
The school bank opened for business on October 13. Participating
students include manager, Nicklas Visser; site engineer, Nathan
Parkhurst; tellers, Rebecca Corbett, Parker Amell, Gracie Barrett, and
Emma Overbeek; and marketers, Savannah Jarecki, Casey Murphy, and
Samantha Harmon. The program helps students learn the basics of
saving money and setting savings goals.
Sherri Long, an Independent Bank customer service representative
and leader of the initiative said, “The kids love it, the teachers love it,
and the associates are excited about working with students and being
involved in this valuable program.”
Each month, at the school board meeting, the board of education
recognizes individuals for their dedication and support to Tri County
Schools. This individual could be a student, school group, teacher,
community member, business, staff member, or volunteer.
In September, business owner of Lattitudes, Frank Zamarripa
and the Max & Patricia Field of Dreams Foundation, along with
elementary art teacher Carolyn Steenland were chosen.
For November, business owners Dean and Kristi Wall from Dean’s
Excavating and Howard Wilson, band teacher, were selected.

A major concern that has always been a focus for Tri County parents
as well as our school staff is how to help children who experience
difficulty in our buildings. All parents and teachers want to see their
children excel, and it can be very frustrating when a child falls behind
in either learning to read, achieving as expected in math and other
subjects, or in getting along socially with peers and teachers. There
has been much conversation at our school board meetings recently
with regard to a process called Response to Intervention. Response to
Intervention or (RTI) is a multi-step approach to providing services
and interventions to struggling learners at increasing levels of intensity.
RTI allows for early intervention by providing academic and behavioral
supports rather than waiting for a child to fail before offering help.
Some new federal laws have directed schools; ours included, to
focus more on helping all children learn by addressing problems earlier,
before the child is so far behind that a referral to special education
services is warranted. These laws include the No Child Left Behind Act
of 2001 and the Individuals With Disabilities Education Improvement
Act (IDEA) of 2004. Both laws underscore the importance of providing
high quality, scientifically based instruction and interventions, and hold
schools accountable for the progress of all students in terms of meeting
state grade level standards. RTI is a process designed to help schools
focus on these high quality interventions while carefully monitoring
student progress. The information gained from an RTI process is used
by school personnel and parents to inform instruction and to determine
the educational needs of the child. In turn helping us respond better to
students who are having difficulty learning what we need them to learn
as well as respond more appropriately to students who do learn it the
first time the information/skill is taught.
What are the essential components of RTI?
Simply, “Response to Intervention” refers to a process that emphasizes
how well students respond to changes in instruction. The essential
elements of an RTI approach are: the provision of scientific, research-
based instruction and interventions in general education; monitoring
and measurement of student progress in response to the instruction
and interventions; and use of these measures of student progress to
shape instruction and make educational decisions. A number of leading
national organizations and coalition groups, including the National
Reading Association, The National Association of the Education of
Young Children, the National Association of Mathematics, the National
Research Center on Learning Disabilities and the 14 organizations
forming the 2004 Learning Disabilities (LD) Roundtable coalition,
have outlined the core features of an RTI process as follows:
• High quality, research-based instruction and behavioral support in general
education.
• Universal (school-wide or district-wide) screening of academics and behavior
in order to determine which students need closer monitoring or additional
interventions.
• Multiple tiers of increasingly intense scientific, research-based interventions that
are matched to student need.
• Use of a collaborative approach by school staff for development, implementation,
and monitoring of the intervention process.
• Continuous monitoring of student progress during the interventions, using
objective information to determine if students are meeting goals.
• Follow-up measures providing information that the intervention was
implemented as intended and with appropriate consistency.
• Documentation of parent involvement throughout the process.
• Documentation that the special education evaluation timelines specified in IDEA
2004 and in the state regulations are followed unless both the parents and the
school team agree to an extension
The Tri County Area School’s parents, teachers, students and
administrators are continually working together with an intense focus
on school improvement for our students. Although a true Response to
Intervention system is really never finished as the needs of the students
change, our school district, parents, and community members are
vigilant in ensuring constant improvement.

world”. Today this holiday is full of football games and over-eating. We should stop and think for a few minutes about being
thankful for many great people and things.

All of the great religions teach gratitude as an important part of our spiritual welfare. Being grateful to God is of highest
importance, and being thankful also has mental and emotional benefits. Our self esteem or self worth is extremely important

to look at things in a different way. I would like to challenge everyone who reads this to stop for a
few minutes, and think of at least twenty things for which you are thankful. Write them down and tape
them to your May 2011 calendar. Then after six months, sit down with your list for a few minutes and

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as

“Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.”
In Michigan in 2009 there were 61,486 reported car-deer crashes with 10 motorists killed and 1,648
injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn.
(Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number five in
the state’s highest accident rate).
What can you do?
• Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
• Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision.
• Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk.
• Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
• Don’t swerve!
• Brake firmly
• Hold on to the steering wheel.
• Stay in your lane.
• Bring you vehicle to a controlled stop.
