BIG PRAIRIE TOWNSHIP CRIME WATCH PROGRAM
NEWAYGO COUNTY JAIL TOUR Monday, December 13 • 6:30 PM
On November 10, the Crime Watch Programs of Big Prairie, Ashland and Ensley Center Townships took part in a tour of Christmas Party Sale
the new jail facility in Newaygo County.
The evening began with a dinner that was attended by an estimated 70 to 80 residents of these townships. At 6 p.m. all of
us proceeded to White Cloud. Once there, we were met with more residents who did not attend the dinner. As we entered the FREE Presents To Be Given Away!
entrance to the jail, we were greeted by Deputy Phil Green, who attended the dinner, Under Sheriff Brian Boyd, and Lt. Tom
Greer. We then split into groups and different officers took the groups to tour different areas of the jail.
The tour started out at the Control Room, which monitors the inmates in the cell blocks. Lt. Greer explained all of the
procedures, why the cell blocks have TV’s, why inmates are allowed to make phone calls using pay phones, and how meals are
brought in. We learned about the federal inmate program, how this helped build the facility and how this jail is self supporting.
Next stop was the Visitor’s Room where we were told how the inmates visited with family and friends via a monitor and
phone system. We then proceeded to see the reception area, offi ces, interview room, evidence room, conference room, offi cer’s

locker room and future workout room for the deputy’s.
The evening ended with cake, coffee, and great prizes were given away in a drawing. It was a very informative and inter-
esting evening. All of us residents need to be proud of our Sheriff’s Department and the new facility that we have. Big Prairie
Township Trustee’s Mary Anderson and Jan Westfield were extremely pleased with the large turnout for this tour. Monday
We wish to extend a big, heartfelt thank you to Deputy Sheriff Phil Green, Under Sheriff Brian Boyd and Lt. Tom Greer
and Lt. Chad Palmiter for making this tour possible. Also we want to give a big thank you to Barb Ryder and staff who set up the Nights
cake and coffee.
In January, Deputy Green, Mary Anderson and Jan Westfield will be meeting to plan the 2011 Crime Watch Program for 6:30 PM
Big Prairie Township. We ask all residents of the township to please look for future articles containing information for this in the
River Valley Shopper. You can also contact Mary at 689-6255 or Jan at 689-6375 for any information. 231-937-5868 • 1-800-560-0838

some early settlers in Massachusetts to celebrate a great harvest and blessings in spite of the hardships of coming to the “new
world”. Today this holiday is full of football games and over-eating. We should stop and think for a few minutes about being
thankful for many great people and things.

All of the great religions teach gratitude as an important part of our spiritual welfare. Being grateful to God is of highest
importance, and being thankful also has mental and emotional benefits. Our self esteem or self worth is extremely important
for sound health. How we feel about others is reflected in how we feel about our selves. When we have good self esteem we 2010 Jeep Wrangler 2009 Dodge Journey
will naturally see more worth in other people and we will be more grateful to others, just for being or for what they do for
us.
It is important that we appreciate our family, even though we may not like some of them and we always get in a fight over
Thanksgiving Dinner. That relative that we do not care for is here to teach us some kind of lesson. As soon as we learn the
lesson, then they will move away or become nicer and we do not have to fight any more. What really happens is that we
change and they simply were following along.
We must be thankful for our work. Work is an amazingly beneficial activity. It also increases our self worth, because we
can look back and see what we have accomplished for the day and feel good (most of the time). We must be thankful for
the men and women who produce the businesses that provide everything that we use in our daily lives. These producers Unlimited. 4 dr., V6, new 3-1/2” lift kit, new tires & wheels, 20,000 mi. AWD, auto., A/C, third row seat.

provide services and jobs, so we can eat and care for ourselves and our children. These business people are grateful for the
consumers who buy their goods and services. For the unemployed, it is a difficult time. But this is also a time to be grateful for
the assistance from others in our community and in our churches.
Last week I had a man in my office who was complaining that President Obama was a socialist. I laughed out loud (lol). I
knew he was on Social Security disability, Medicare and Medicaid. His defensive comment was that he 2006 Honda Ridgeline RTL 2006 Chrysler 300
had been injured and “could not help it if he could not work”. He finally understood that he should be
thankful for the social programs and socialist Presidents who have started these programs for people
who temporarily need help. In spite of lots of complaining about our government and the country, we
still live in the best place in the world. Be thankful you live in America.
It really does not matter what our situation is, we can be grateful about many things. We just need
to look at things in a different way. I would like to challenge everyone who reads this to stop for a
few minutes, and think of at least twenty things for which you are thankful. Write them down and tape
them to your May 2011 calendar. Then after six months, sit down with your list for a few minutes and
see what has happened to the items on your list. You will see that many good things have happened V6, auto., 4x4, leather, loaded. Touring, V6, auto. Sharp car!

Whistles, Windsynth & Other Toys…
Cal is a player of music, a maker of jewelry, a teller of stories, and a self-described “Jack of a Few Trades.”
Involved in music since childhood, it remains one of his core passions. Call is proficient on a wide variety
of wind, brass, keyboard and stringed instruments, using that ability to craft original sons, as well as arrange-
ments of hymn tunes and popular classical pieces.
He performs on a number of unusual instruments, including Irish low whistles, recorders, ocarina, me-
lodica, and an electronic instrument call a Wind Controller or Windsynth. The Windsynth sends digital
