1. (a) What are different tape corrections? Describe in brief. How would you obtain
the combined correction?
(b) B and C are two points on the opposite banks of a river along a chain line
ABC which crosses the river at right angles to the bank. From a point P which
is 150 ft. from B along the bank, the bearing of A is 2150 30′ and the bearing
of C is
3050 30′ . If the length AB is 200 ft., find the width of the river. [6+10]

2. A and B are two points 200m apart on right bank of river flowing east to west. A
tree is 200 and 3300 , respectively, as measured clockwise with respect to the north.
Find the width of the river. [16]

3. (a) Describe the construction and importance of a level tube in a levelling instru-
ment.
(b) What is sensitivity of level tube? Derive a relation between the sensitivity
and the radius of the tube. [8+8]

4. Compute the area of cross-section if the formation widh is 12m, side slopes are 1 to
1, average height along the center line is 5m, and the tranverse slope of the ground
is 15 to 1. [16]

5. (a) What are ‘face left’ and ‘face right’ observations? Why is it necessary to take
both face observations?
(b) Why both verniers are read in theodolite? [10+6]

6. To determine the distance between two points C and D and their elevations, the
following observations were taken upon a vertically held staff from two traverse
stations A and B. The tacheometer was fitted with an anallactic lens ,the constants
of instrument being 100:

7. (a) Two straights AB and BC are intersected by a line D1 D2 . The angles BD1 D2
and BD2 D1 are 400 30’ and 360 24’ respectively. The radius of the first arc
is 600m and that of the second arc is 800m. If the chainage of intersection
point B is 8248.10m, find the chainages of the tangent point and the point of
compound curvature?
(b) Derive relationship between the radius and the degree of curve. [16]

8. Discuss in detail the advantages of the following over traditional method of survey-
ing:

(a) Total Station


(b) Global positioning system. [16]

1. (a) Write short note on stepping method.


(b) In passing an obstacle in the form of a pond, stations A and D, on the main
line, were taken on the opposite sides of the pond. On the left of AD, a lien
AB, 225 m long was laid down, and a second line AC, 275m long was ranged
on the right of AD, the points B, D and C being in the same straight line. BD
and DC were then chained and found to be 125 m and 137.5 m respectively.
Find the length of AD. [6+10]

2. (a) A tape is 30m at a standard tension of 100N, and its cross-section 6.0 mm×0.2
mm. If the applied tension is 80 N, and E=1.95×105 N/mm2 , calculate the
correction.
(b) Calculate the horizontal length between two supports approximately level if
the measured length is 50.441 m. The tape has a mass of 0.615 kg and the
applied tension is 80 N. [8+8]

3. A dumpy level was setup at L1 exactly midway between A and B, 50m apart. The
readings on the staff when held on A and B were, respectively, 1.40m and 2.40m.
The instrument was then shifted and set up at point L2 on the line BA produced
and 10m from A. The readings on the staff held at A and B were, respectively, 1.50
and 2.60. Determine the correct readings and the R.L.of B if that of A is 200.00.

4. A planimeter was used to determine the area of the plan. When it traversed clock-
wise with the needle point inside the figure, the final and initial readings were 8.460
and 6.480, respectively. It was noted that the zero of the dial passed the fixed index
twice in the counter clockwise direction. The multiplying and additive constants
of the instrument are 100 cm2 and 20, respectively. Compute the area of the plan.

5. (a) What is the check on the accuracy of a closed traverse? What is the error of
a closure? How would you minimize them?
(b) What are the instrumental errors in a theodolite? How would you minimize
them? [8+8]

6. (a) Derive an expression for the distance between the anallactic lens and the object
glass?
(b) A tacheometer was setup at a station A and the readings on a vertically held
staff at B were 2.255, 2.605 and 2.955, the line of sight being at an inclination

of +80 24’. Another observation on the vertically held staff at B.M gave the
readings 1.640, 1.920 and 2.200, the inclination of the line of sight being +10 6’.
Calculate the horizontal distance between A and B and the elevation of B if
the R.L of B.M is 418.685m. The constants of the instruments were 100 and
0.3. [16]

7. (a) What is a compound curve? Derive relationships between various elements of


a compound curve?
(b) A compound curve is to connect two straights having a deflection angle of 900 .
AS determined from the plan, the lengths of the two tangents are 350m and
400m respectively. Calculate the lengths of the two arcs if the radius of the
first curve is to be 300m? [16]

8. Briefly describe the applications of GIS. Discuss, how closely GIS is related to
remote sensing? [16]

1. (a) Explain the principle on which chain survey is based.


(b) What are different methods of making linear measurements? Describe briefly.

2. (a) Discuss the methods of overcoming difficulties of there are obstacles in chaining
and ranging both.
(b) Determine the maximum length of an offset so that the displacement of a
point on the drawing paper should not exceed 0.25 mm if the offset was laid
at 40 from its true direction and the scale was 1 cm = 10m. [8+8]

3. The following consecutive readings were taken with a dumpy level and a 4 m lev-
elling staff on continuously sloping ground at 30 m intervals.

(a) Rule out a page of level book and enter the above readings.

4. (a) Draw the sketch of a two level section, and derive an expression for the area
of cross-section.
(b) Draw a sidehill two-level section and derive an expression for the area of cross-
section when there is:
i. Cutting at the centre-line
ii. Filling at the centre-line. [6+10]

5. Draw a neat sketch of a vernier theodolite and explain the functions of the various
parts? Also list out temporary adjustments of it. [16]

6. (a) Derive an expression for the distance between the anallactic lens and the object

(b) A tacheometer was setup at a station A and the readings on a vertically held
staff at B were 2.255, 2.605 and 2.955, the line of sight being at an inclination
of +80 24’. Another observation on the vertically held staff at B.M gave the
readings 1.640, 1.920 and 2.200, the inclination of the line of sight being +10 6’.
Calculate the horizontal distance between A and B and the elevation of B if
the R.L of B.M is 418.685m. The constants of the instruments were 100 and

7. Two straights AB and BC intersect at an inaccessible point B. Chainage of point


M on the straight AB is 5865m from where the following theodolite traverse was
run to another point N on the forward straight BC:

(b) Explain the working of a dumpy level with a sketch. What are the various

4. An area defined by the lines of a traverse ABCDEA is to be partitioned by a line


XY,X being on AB, and Y on CD, having bearing 198056.the area of XCDYX has
to be 30300m2 . The coordinates of the traverse stations are given in table: [16]

6. (a) Explain the use of an anallactic lens in an external focusing telescope used in
tacheometry. What are its advantages and disadvantages?
(b) Determine the constants of tacheometer if for the line of collimation horizontal,
the stadia readings for the staff held at 25m and 50m are respectively 1.900,
1.410 and 2.22, 1.23. [16]

7. (a) Explain the procedure for setting out a circular curve with a tape and a
theodolite?
(b) Two tangents meet at an angle of 1300 . Calculate the lengths of the offsets
measured from the tangent for setting out a curve of 200m radius if:
i. The offsets are radial
ii. The offsets are perpendicular to the tangent. [16]
