Pearl Harbor attack

Dec. 7 should be a day
that the citizens of Delphos
take a moment to remember.
Three Delphos men were
serving at Pearl Harbor
when it was attacked by the
Japanese 69 years ago. Two
of them died.
Walter R. French was
serving with the 89th Field
Artillery of the 25th Infantry
Division. He was killed dur-
ing the attack. He was the first
soldier in the 25th Infantry
Division to die in World War
II.
John Peltier was serving
aboard the USS Arizona.
He died when the Arizona
a bomb from an attacking
dive bomber. He is forever
entombed in the ship with his
shipmates.
The third son of Delphos
was Robert Dray, who sur-

Allen County Common Pleas
Court.
Aaron Eblin, 38, was given
a year each on one count of
trafficking in heroin, a fifth-
degree felony; and trafficking
in heroin in close proximity
to a juvenile, a fourth-degree
felony.
Eblin was indicted by an
Allen County Grand Jury after
a long-term investigation by the
West Central Ohio Task Force
in the Delphos area and was
arrested in the Delphos raid
conducted by the task force and
Delphos police in May.

Pairs of volunteers watched
anxiously as a screen sifted
archaeological treasures from
cold, damp dirt.
The group of about 20
professional archaeologists,
Ohio State University stu-
dents and history buffs shared
a quiet sense of excitement
and urgency as each histori-
cal find was unearthed yester-
day at the Deardurff House,
a 193-year-old log house in
Columbus.
The house is the oldest
known structure in Franklin
County still on its original
foundation. It was built in

“This is rare. You don’t
get many chances to do an
archaeological dig like this
within a city’s limits,” Sewell
said.
The plate is one of many
artifacts found in the dig,
which continues today.
Animal-bone fragments,
pieces of pottery and brick,
nails, plates and a clay marble
were unearthed.
They were just the types
of remnants that Walt Reiner,
67, a real-estate agent and
property developer from
Westerville, hoped to find.
Reiner, who bought the
Deardurff House about 30
years ago, authorized the dig
as part of his effort to restore
the house and turn it into a
log cabin. He said he hopes
to turn the Deardurff house’s
neighborhood into a replica of
what the Franklinton neigh-
borhood once looked like.
For the 39 volunteers, the
dig was a rewarding oppor-
tunity to “get their hands on
some old dirt and stuff,” said
Anne Lee, an archaeologist
and principal investigator on
the dig.
“People are generally
interested in archaeology and
the history of this area,” she
said, noting that the two-day
dig had a waiting list of at
least 30 others who wanted
to volunteer. “It’s important
for a lot of people to have
sort of a connection to their
history.”

top goal in tax-cut plan

a disclosure of some of the
most sensitive information yet
revealed by WikiLeaks, the
website has put out a secret
cable listing sites worldwide
that the U.S. considers criti-
cal to its national security.
U.S. officials said the leak
amounts to giving a hit list to
terrorists.
Among the locations cited
in the diplomatic cable from
Secretary of State Hillary
Rodham Clinton are undersea
communications lines, mines,
antivenin factories and sup-
pliers of food and manufac-
turing materials.
The Pentagon declined
to comment Monday on the
details of what it called “sto-
len” documents containing
classified information. But
a spokesman, Col. David
Lapan, called the disclo-
sure “damaging” and said it
gives valuable information to
adversaries.
The State Department
echoed the Pentagon’s state-
ment. “Releasing such infor-
mation amounts to giving a
targeting list to groups like
al-Qaida,” agency spokesman
P.J. Crowley said. British
Foreign Secretary William
Hague condemned the dis-
closure, telling the BBC it

WASHINGTON — After
all is said and done, taxpayers
will make a $12 billion profit
on the government’s $45 bil-
lion bailout of Citigroup.
The Treasury Department
said late Monday that it had
struck a deal to sell its remain-
ing holdings in Citigroup
common stock, about 2.4 bil-
lion shares. With the proceeds
of the sale, priced at $4.35 a
share, the government will
have realized $57 billion on
its bailout package for the big
bank.
“By selling all the remain-
ing Citigroup shares today,
we had an opportunity to lock
in substantial profits for the
taxpayer and avoid future
risk,” said Tim Massad, the
Treasury official who heads
up the bailout program.
Citigroup received $45 bil-
lion in taxpayer support late
in 2008 in one of the larg-
est bailouts undertaken by the
government as it struggled
to contain the worst financial
crisis to hit the country since
the 1930s.
The bailout of Citigroup
and other large banks was
begun under the Republican
administration of George W.
Bush but turned into a major
gressional impasse that would
cause the tax cuts enacted
in 2001 and 2003 to expire
for all taxpayers. With 9.8

“a chilling prospect.”
Liberal groups were furi-
ous at his willingness to bend,
but Obama said he rejects
“symbolic victories” that hurt
average Americans.
His plan also would renew
jobless benefits for the long-

stopped speaking before top
Republicans applauded his pro-
posals, while most Democrats

Senate Minority Leader
Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.,
thanked Obama for “working
with Republicans on a biparti-
san plan to prevent a tax hike
on any American and in creat-
ing incentives for economic
growth.”
Because they hold solid
majorities in both chambers,
Democrats must provide
many votes for the tax pack-
age to become law, even if
Republicans overwhelmingly
support it.
Some Democrats quickly
denounced the plan. “Senate
Republicans have successful-
ly used the fragile economic
security of our middle class
and the hardship of millions of

confidential that the contribu-
tors were advised to come up
with the information on their
own: Posts are “not being
asked to consult with host

Attached to Clinton’s mes-
sage was a rundown of sites
included in the 2008 “Critical
Foreign Dependencies
Initiative” list. Some of the
sites, such as border cross-
ings, hydroelectric dams and
shipping lanes, could hardly
be considered secret.
But other locations, such
as mines, manufacturers of
components used in weap-
ons systems, and vaccine and
antivenin sources, probably
were not widely known. The
Associated Press has decid-
ed against publishing their
political liability for President
Barack Obama in last month’s
congressional elections.
Republicans took control
of the House and gained six
seats in the Senate by capital-
izing on voter anger over the
bailouts and soaring federal
budget deficits.
The administration has
insisted that the bailouts were
needed to prevent an even
deeper recession. They said
the cost of the bailouts has
been falling as Citigroup and
other rescued institutions pay
back their government loans.
The latest estimate from
the Congressional Budget
Office in late November was
that the $700 billion Troubled
Asset Relief Program would
end up costing the govern-
ment $25 billion, down from
an August CBO estimate of
$66 billion.
Of the $45 billion provid-
ed to Citigroup, $25 billion
was converted to a govern-
ment ownership stake that the
Treasury has been selling off
since last spring. The bank
repaid the other $20 billion in
December 2009.
Treasury said that with the
pricing of the last 2.4 bil-
lion shares of common stock
on Monday, it would receive
$31.8 billion from the sale of
common stock plus another
$2.9 billion in interest and

lawyer, Mark Stephens, said
he was arranging for Assange
to meet police so he could
be questioned. Assange has
denied the allegations.

Monday’s deal, for which
Morgan Stanley acted as
bookrunning manager, is
expected to close on Friday,
Treasury said. Citigroup is
paying the underwriting fees.

Several weeks ago, I was
talking to a friend of mine
about her feelings about
adoption. She said that while
she already had three chil-
dren, she had considered
adopting another child but
decided that she didn’t think
she could raise “somebody
else’s child.”
As the mother of a child
that I adopted I found this to
be a strange statement. My
first thought was an indignant
feeling of “I’m not raising
somebody else’s child, I’m
raising my child.” But that
isn’t exactly right. I am rais-
ing somebody else’s child. I
am raising God’s child. But
so are we all.
I have always felt that no
matter how we ultimately
received our child, they all
belong to God, he is merely
allowing us to share the joy.
While the way we receive the
children he has granted us
varies from person to person,
his gift is always the same.
He grants us the opportunity
to shape two lives, our child’s
and our own.
When I think about all of
the twists and turns that hap-
pened in my life and my son’s
life to allow us to become
a family, I know it was no
coincidence that we ended up
a parent but the timing is
somewhat different because
you really have no idea when
it will happen. I had no pre-
conceived notions about sex,
race or age. I put my faith
in God that he would lead
me to my child. I remember
feeling the need to call my
case worker one day several
months after all my adoption
paperwork had been com-
pleted because I just felt like
it was time for something to
happen. While I was on the
phone with her, she got a fax
about a little boy who needed
immediate placement and she
asked if I was interested in
talking to his case worker. I
remember when I hung up the
phone, before I even knew
his name or his age, I knew I
had a son. From that moment,
he wasn’t a little boy in fos-
ter care who was available
for adoption, he was my son
and I needed to know what I
would have to do to get him
home.
He seemed to share that
same sense of belonging. One
of my favorite memories was
when he was 4 years old and
had been with me for only a
few months at the time, he
was lying on his bed getting
ready to go to sleep and he
asked me how I knew that
his big brown eyes and said
“I was waiting for you my
whole life.”
That pretty much sums up
what it is to be a parent.
We don’t fall in love with
a certain collection of chro-
mosomes. In the end, it has
nothing to do with biology,
and everything to do with
the child. We love how they
make us laugh, and how they
make us cry. We love the
way their cold toes feel when
they crawl into bed with us at
night, and the giant “squeezy
hug” they give us for making
their favorite dinner. We love
the way that Phineas and Ferb
are suddenly more important
than Anderson Cooper.
We aren’t just raising a
child, we are sharing a life-
time. We aren’t just shaping
their lives, they are shaping
ours. We help mold them into
the people God wanted them
to be and in so doing, have
been shaped by them into
becoming the person we were
supposed to be.

players, will meet in
the national cham-
pionship game next
month.
First, a stop in
New York.
Newton and
James were named
finalists for the
Heisman Trophy on
Monday and will be
joined by Stanford’s
Andrew Luck and
Kellen Moore of Boise State
for Saturday’s announcement
in Times Square.
Newton overcame a pay-
to-play scandal with a superb
season on the field, piling up
nearly 4,000 combined yards
and 49 touchdowns in leading
the top-ranked Tigers into the
Jan. 10 national championship
game.
James and the Ducks will
be there waiting for them in the
desert after he piled up more
yards and touchdowns than
anyone else in FBS, helping
the second-ranked Ducks into
their first national title game.
“Since I was a young boy,
playing the game of football
has been a pure joy and this
season has been a very special
one for my teammates and for
me,” Newton said in a state-
ment. “I know as a team we’re
excited to get back on the field
on January 10 against a great
Oregon team.”
Newton is the front-runner
but the big question is whether
voters will look past the scandal
involving his father.
Newton was unparalleled on
the field. He threw for 2,589
yards and 28 touchdowns
while running for 1,409 yards
and 20 more scores — adding
another on a reception — to
join Florida quarterback and
2007 Heisman Trophy winner
Tim Tebow and Nevada’s Colin
Kaepernick (this season) as the
only FBS players to have 20
touchdowns rushing and pass-
ing in a season.
In his final regular-season
game, he threw four TD passes
and scored two more on the
ground in Auburn’s 56-17 rout
of 18th-ranked South Carolina
that earned Auburn the SEC
championship and a shot at its
first national title since 1957.
The knock against Newton
is the shenanigans by his
father, Cecil. The elder Newton
was accused of working with
the owner of a scouting service
to get up to $180,000 for his
son to play at Mississippi State
while the quarterback was
being recruited out of junior
college last year.

James was the main cog in
Oregon’s nearly point-a-minute
offense, forcing teams to key
on him while the rest of his
talented teammates ran all over
the field. Oregon led the nation
in scoring at nearly 50 points
per game and was second in
total yards, just a few tenths
behind Oklahoma State at 537
yards per game.
Even with the extra attention,
James led the nation with 1,682
yards and 21 touchdowns; his
152 yards per game was near-
ly 10 more than Connecticut’s
Jordan Todman in second.
He closed out the regular sea-
son by gaining 134 yards in
Oregon’s 37-20 win over rival
Oregon State on Saturday that
clinched the school’s first trip to
the national title game.
Luck was second fiddle to
Washington’s Heisman hope-
ful Jake Locker to open the
season but quickly established
himself as the Pac-10’s best
quarterback. The 6-4 junior won
a lopsided battle over Locker
and his Huskies early in the
season and guided the fifth-
ranked Cardinal to one of the
best seasons in school history.
A projected top NFL pick, Luck
threw for over 3,000 yards and
a school-record 28 touchdowns
with just seven interceptions
and completed 70 percent of
his passes for an 11-1 team that
earned an Orange Bowl berth.
“He’s the best player I have
ever been around,” Stanford
coach Jim Harbaugh said.
“He’s the best player, the most
valuable player on one of the
best teams in the country. He’s

Moore wasn’t much of a
Heisman hopeful early in the
season but quickly played his
way into the picture in leading
the Broncos to the cusp of a
BCS bowl berth.
The junior was
second in the nation
in passer efficiency,
throwing for over 3,500
yards with 33 TDs and
five interceptions, but
his chances took a hit
with a loss to Nevada
that knocked Boise
State out of BCS con-
tention.
“I think it’s been a
tremendous year,” Moore said.
“We had the disappointment of
the Nevada game but things
we accomplished, the way we
played, we’re still one of the best
teams in the country I think.”
Alabama’s Mark Ingram, the
2009 Heisman Trophy winner,
wasn’t much of a factor in his
bid to repeat.
The bruising running back
missed the first two games
after offseason knee surgery
and wasn’t nearly as dynam-
ic as a year ago, rushing for
816 yards, half his total from a
year ago. His team also had its
repeat national title hopes fizzle
with an early season loss to
South Carolina and later losses
to LSU and Newton’s Tigers.
Bowers wins Bronko
Nagurski Trophy: Amid his year
of tragedy, Clemson DE Da’Quan
Bowers slimmed down, got serious
about football and had a breakout
season.
Bowers was honored for his
dominance Monday night with the
Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the
nation’s top defensive player, an
award he wishes he could share
with his father and his mentor.
Playing with a heavy heart fol-
lowing the deaths this year of his
father, Dennis, and close friend
Gaines Adams of the Chicago
Bears, Bowers burst onto the
scene after two mediocre years.
The 6-4, 275-pound junior leads
the nation with 15 1/2 sacks and his
25 tackles for a loss rank second in
the country.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney
was the keynote speaker at
Monday’s banquet as Bowers
edged out Auburn DT Nick Fairley,
Boston College LB Luke Kuechly,
Georgia LB Justin Houston and
LSU CB Patrick Peterson for the
award presented by the Charlotte
Touchdown Club.
Bowers, of Bamberg, S.C., first
met Adams when he attended a
Clemson camp in the eighth grade.
Adams would later set numerous
Clemson records and was a finalist
for the Nagurski Trophy in 2006
before being a first-round pick of
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the
following spring.
Adams, who was later traded to
Chicago, died in January of cardiac
arrest. The autopsy report said he
had an enlarged heart.
Bowers had shed 15 pounds
and was performing well in pre-
season camp in August when his
father collapsed while performing
in his gospel band. Bowers was
later visiting him in the hospital
when his father suffered a seizure
and died. Bowers spent two weeks
away before rejoining the team.
Bowers, wearing Adams’
old No. 93, had a sack in nine
straight games this season, break-
ing Adams’ record by a game.
He’s surpassed Adams’ record for
sacks by a defensive lineman and
needs one sack when Clemson
(6-6) meets South Florida (7-5) in
the Meineke Bowl on Dec. 31 to
break Keith Adams’ overall school
sacks record.
Bowers had tough competition
for the Nagurski award named after
the former Minnesota college star
and member of the Pro Football
Hall of Fame.
Fairley has 10 1/2 sacks and 21
tackles for a loss, Kuechly leads the
country with 171 tackles, Houston
has 10 sacks and 18 1/2 tackles
for a loss and Peterson has four
interceptions.
Malzahn named Broyles
Award winner: Auburn offensive
coordinator Gus Malzahn won the
annual Broyles Award given to the
nation’s top college assistant coach
on Monday.
Malzahn is also the quarter-
backs coach for the top-ranked
Tigers, who will play for the national
championship next month against
Oregon.
Malzahn is the 15th winner
of the award named in honor of
former Arkansas coach Frank
Broyles. The 45-year-old Arkansas
native began his college coach-
ing career under Broyles, then the
athletic director, at Arkansas during
the 2006 season.
He began his high school
coaching career at Hughes before
winning two state championships at
Shiloh Christian in Springdale. He
later took over at Springdale High
in the state’s largest classification,
going 14-0 in 2005 and winning the
state championship while finishing
in the top five in most national high
school polls.
That team featured star play-
ers such as current USC QB Mitch
Mustain and Tennessee Titans WR
Damian Williams.
Malzahn brought Mustain and
Williams with him to Arkansas
when he was hired as the offen-
sive coordinator at Arkansas under
then-coach Houston Nutt. After a
season filled with conflict with Nutt
behind the scenes, one that led
to the transfers of Mustain and
Williams, Malzahn left for the same
position at Tulsa.
Other finalists this year were
Stanford offensive coordinator Greg
Roman, Oklahoma State offen-
sive coordinator Dana Holgorsen,
Wisconsin defensive coordinator
Paul Chryst and TCU defensive

his NFL-record 26th straight
regular-season home victory.
It was the most anticipated
matchup of the year — and it
was a rout from the outset.
“We don’t listen to the
hype,” Brady said. “I don’t
think we ever have. We real-
ly take after our coach (Bill
Belichick) and he says ‘When
you win, say little. When you
lose, say less’.”
Instead, Brady said it all
with yet another magnificent
performance. The 3-time
Super Bowl champion sur-
passed Brett Favre’s mark
for consecutive wins in the
comforts of his own stadium,
lifting the Patriots (10-2) to
the best record in the AFC. If
this was for bragging rights
in the conference, Rex Ryan
and the Jets (9-3) will have to
be silent for a while.
“I came in here to kick his
butt,” Ryan said of Belichick,
“and he kicked mine. There

DEAR DR. GOTT: My mother-in-
law is 70 years old. She never had
a need to see an eye doctor until last
week, when she scratched her eye.
She found a local ophthalmologist
who told her that she has Fuchs’
disease, something she had never
heard of before.
As a coincidence, I decided since
I turned 50 recently that it was time
for me to have my eyes checked. Lo
and behold, and hundreds of dollars
later, I had an exam and was told that
I needed glasses. When I asked my
eye doctor about Fuchs’, he told me
briefly about the condition. Can you
tell me more?
DEAR READER: The outermost
layer of the eye is known as the
cornea. It doesn’t contain any blood
vessels to nourish or protect it, but
it gets its nourishment from the
aqueous humor behind the eyes and
from tears. Its purpose is to protect
the eye from debris, dust and germs.
In order for a person to see well, all
five layers of the cornea must be free
of any cloudy areas. Visual disorders
are quite common, affecting about
120 million people in the United
States, causing them to wear glasses
or contact lenses. The disorders to
which I refer are known as refractive
errors. They affect the cornea and
include myopia (nearsightedness),
hyperopia (farsightedness) and
astigmatism (uneven curvature of the
cornea).
Some of the more common
disorders of the cornea include
allergies that may be the result of a
prescribed medication, animal hair,
eye makeup, mascara, pollen and
more; pinkeye (conjunctivitis), which
can be caused by a viral or bacterial
infection; irritants in the environment;
eyedrops and ointments; infection of
the cornea brought on by bacteria
or fungi from contact lenses that
have not been cleaned properly;
dry eyes, which can result from
antihistamines, nasal decongestants,
antidepressants and tranquilizers;
herpes zoster (shingles) produced by
the varicella-zoster virus; and ocular
herpes, a recurrent viral infection
caused by the herpes-simplex virus.
A less common disorder is known
as Fuchs’ dystrophy, a slowly

flashlight, extra batteries, votive
candles and small holders, a
lighter and a small wind-up radio.
My husband then attached the can
to the wall in the laundry/pantry
room off the main room. In the
event we lose power, we will not
have to root around for candles,
lighter, batteries or a flashlight.
This happened to us once late at
night, and finding those things
while in total darkness was not fun.

affects both eyes. The condition is
slightly more common in women
than in men and can be detected in
its earliest stages when a person is
in his or her mid-30s; however, the
disease rarely affects a person’s
vision until the age of 50 or older.
Fuchs’ occurs when the cells that
line the inside of the blood vessels
deteriorate for no apparent reason.
With the continuation of the loss
of cells, the endothelium cannot
function efficiently enough to pump
fluid out of the connective tissue. The
cornea swells, and vision becomes
distorted. Over time, the epithelium
will take on fluid that will result in
visual impairment, pain and a visual
haze.
In the early stages, a person
may awaken with blurred vision that
will clear as the day progresses.
This occurs because the cornea is
thicker in the morning as it retains
fluids during sleep that evaporate
during the day. With progression of
the disease, the swelling will remain
constant and vision will be reduced
throughout waking hours.
Treatment will begin by reducing
the swelling with the help of drops,
ointments or soft contact lenses.
When the disease affects quality
of life by interfering with normal
daily activities, a corneal transplant
might be in order. At this stage, the
success rate for this surgery is good;
however, long-term survival of the
new cornea might be a problem that
will have to be addressed. Fuchs’
generally affects both eyes equally,
progresses gradually over time,
occurs in otherwise healthy people,
and is usually inherited.

SAN FRANCISCO —
A line of questioning at an
appeals court hearing over
California’s gay marriage ban
suggested the three judges
could issue a decision that
would legalize same-sex mar-
riage in that state but leave
intact bans in other western
states under the court’s juris-
diction.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court
of Appeals heard nearly
three hours of arguments
Monday during a televised
hearing that reached a nation-
wide audience anxious for
a final decision on whether
voter-approved Proposition 8
and similar same-sex mar-
riage bans violate the U.S.
Constitution.
The judges appeared trou-
bled over whether they could
recognize marriage as a civil
right for all same-sex couples
or only those in states that
already grant gays the rights
of marriage without the title.
Theodore Olson — who
argued a portion of the case
on behalf of the two same-sex
couples who sued to overturn
Proposition 8 and persuaded a
lower court to strike it down
— said denying gays the right
to wed constitutes discrimina-
tion that cannot be justified
under any circumstances.
“What this comes down
to, it seems to me, is that
California has built a fence
around its gay and lesbian
citizens and it has built a
fence around the institution of
marriage, which the Supreme
Court says, not based on pro-
creation or anything else, is
the most important relation-
ship in life,” Olson said.
His oratory prompted Judge
Stephen Reinhardt, the panel’s
most liberal member, to ask if
Proposition 8 were a unique
case because it amended the
California Constitution to out-
law same-sex marriages five
months after the state Supreme
Court had legalized them.
“Your closing speech
would require a holding that
any state that did not permit
gay marriage would be in vio-
lation of the Constitution,” the
judge said. “There is a possi-
bility, I think in this case, that

gays and lesbians is uncon-
stitutional under the circum-
stances that they enjoyed
that right, that they are given
every aspect of marriage and
the only thing taken away is
the honorific of marriage.”
Attorney Charles Cooper,
who represents sponsors of
the 2008 measure, argued
that same-sex couples can
be treated differently when
it comes to marriage with-
out running afoul of the
Constitution because “sexual
relationships between men
and women naturally produce
children.”
“Society has no particular
interest in a platonic relation-
ship between a man and a
woman no matter how close
it might be, or emotional
relationships between other
people as well, but when the
relationship becomes a sexual
one, society has a consider-
able interest in that,” Cooper
said. “Its vital interests are
actually threatened by the
possibility of an unintentional
and unwanted pregnancy.”
Mondays’ hearing
also focused on whether
Proposition 8’s supporters
have legal standing to chal-
lenge a lower court ruling that
the ban was unconstitutional.
The issue surfaced after out-
going California Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger and Attorney
General Jerry Brown both
refused to challenge the rul-
ing that overturned the ban.
The panel appeared dubi-
ous about whether the ban’s
supporters were qualified to
appeal but also seemed wor-
ried about allowing the gov-
ernor and attorney general to
effectively kill Proposition 8
by refusing to defend it.
Opponents of Proposition
8 contend it violates the due
process and equal protection
rights of gays and lesbians
under the U.S. Constitution
by denying them the right
to marry the person of their
choice and by singling them
out for disparate treatment
without a legitimate ratio-
nale.

they’re holding on more
tightly to their wallets while
they’re there.
A new statistical study
shows the amount of time
gamblers spent inside casinos
in the nation’s second-largest
gambling market is down
more than 22 percent, and the
amount of money they spend
there is down almost 30 per-
cent over the last four years.
And the hit to the casi-
nos’ bottom line is substan-
tial: gross operating profit per
hour is down 61 percent.
