Toft to head WASB again
by Donnell Stump
Weatherly Area school board will
continue to be led by John Toft who
was selected to serve as board
president for 2011. Toft had previ-
ously been president in 2006 and
2008, and was again elected to the
position by fellow board members
earlier in 2010 when then board
president Joanne Dougherty re-
signed from the post.
Dougherty continues to serve on
the board but did not attend last
week’s reorganization meeting in
person, instead participating by
phone due to a medical problem.
Corey Gerhart, who also has serv-
ed a term as president during his
stint as a board member, was
selected for the vice-president’s
role.
Toft, who has been on the board
since December 2005, will also con-
tinue as the alternate to the Carbon
County Tax Collection Commission.
Thomas Russell will also continue
on the TCC as the school district’s
Storytime offers holiday fun
The White Haven Area Com-
munity Library offers a story time for
all children ages 2-4 on Wednesday
mornings beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Story time consists of stories,
crafts, and other activities free of
charge. December activities and
stories will focus around winter,
snow, and Christmas.
We are currently looking for a
Santa to help us out on December
22 around 11 a.m. The tots will be
enjoying their Christmas party and it
would be great if Santa could join
us.
Please remember to drop off your
new, unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots
at the Library. No stuffed animals

Program plans celebration
The Community Lunch held at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in White
Haven will celebrate 18 months of service to the community with
a party on December 17, serving lunch from 11:30-12 with special hol-
iday snacks and appetizers. The lunch is open to new guests. Just
come in and join us on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
As we enter the winter season, please note that we will be closed on
days when there are ice or snowstorms, and possibly the days follow-
ing until the roads and sidewalks are clear.

of-living-adjustment for state
lawmakers set to take effect
Dec. 1:
“Many people in my district
are still struggling with
unemployment and trying to
make ends meet, which is
why I am continuing, as I
have in years past, to give
back the COLA.
“The automatic COLA law-
makers receive is based on
the inflation rate and is the
result of a state law ap-
proved in 1995 - long before
I was elected to office.
“Since being elected to the
House of Representatives in
2007, I have written a check
back to the Commonwealth
each year for the amount of
the increase.”

work should not merit an
additional check,” said Heff-
ley. “My friends and neigh-
bors do not typically receive
a company car to drive to
and from work, nor are they
given additional pay beyond
their salary or wages.
“As an advocate for re-
forming the way Harrisburg
does business, I am plan-
ning on leading by example
by not taking these perks,”
said Heffley. “It is a privilege
to serve as a member of the
House, but that does not
mean that House members
are a privileged class. We
should receive compensa-
tion packages in line with the
average Pennsylvanian,
nothing more. Legislators
should not be receiving pay
increases when most of the
people we represent are
struggling from paycheck to
paycheck and have not had
a cost-of-living increase.”

million center will open 69
years after the attack on
Pearl Harbor by the
Japanese military forces –
the act that sent America to

Pearl Harbor!ʼ “Now the mil-
lion and a half visitors who
come each year will experi-
ence Pearl Harbor as if they
were there on that day of
destruction.”
A newly digitized, award-
winning film that will continue
to be shown before every
boat tour out to the memorial
that arches over the USS
Arizona, where 1,177 crew-
men lost their lives. The
Pearl Harbor Visitor Center
now displays a model of the
Nakajima B5N Kate bomber
as it bears down on the
museumʼs Attack and After-
math section. The new mu-
seum allows an enhanced
learning experience. On
shore, a long promenade
leading to the launch landing
offers a place of contempla-
tion. Itʼs inscribed with
quotes from the people who

three sections, Road to War,

Aftermath, occupying more
than 7,000 square feet of
space, double that of the old
museum. “Before, we had
only the story of the attack,

Japan, and the elements of
war. “It was never our inten-
tion to ignore the people of
Hawaii and the important
part they played in the suc-
cess of our defeat of the
enemy. Included are stories
of the civilians who worked
side by side with the military
and the impact on the
Hawaiians when their sacred
harbor of Puʼuloa (Pearl
Harbor) was bombed. A new
theater within the museum
shows a 10-minute film on
the tactics of the attack
across three interconnected
52-inch screens with sur-
round sound.
The Pearl Harbor Visitor
Center attractions include:

breaking diplomatic codes.
The exhibits are hard-hit-
ting. Some are graphic with
cautions that they may be
too intense for children.
These include a burned-out
slab of the Arizona, a blood-
ied sailorʼs uniform and a
photo of a dead American on
the shore of Ford Island.
Many opinions were gath-
ered before the exhibits were
designed and installed. The
overall conclusion was,
“Donʼt whitewash war.”
A one-third scale model of

museum. Behind it is a 25-
foot-long mural, painted by
noted naval artist Tom
Freeman, described as “the
moment the torpedoes were
released from the Japanese
subs and the bombs began
falling, the moment before
“hell broke loose in Hawaii.”
The exhibits include an
interactive Japanese code-
breaking challenge and ex-
tensive displays of memora-
bilia donated by survivors
and their families. Climate-
controlled cases allow the
display of artifacts never
before shown. On exhibit for
the first time is a letter that
never reached its destina-
tion. Written by U.S. Presi-
dent Franklin Roosevelt on
the night of Dec. 6, it con-
tains FDRʼs request that war
be reconsidered by the
emperor of Japan.
One year before their 70th
anniversary, members of the
Pearl Harbor Survivors
Association able to travel will
be the most honored guests
at the dedication of the
national monument Dec. 7.
Originally, 80,000 people
were eligible for member-
ship. That number has
shrunk to 3,000, with just 80
survivors and their family
members expected for the
dedication. They will be hon-
ored with a Walk of Honor, in
which they will be saluted by
the members of the military,
the park service and digni-
taries.

Comets have new look, but same lofty goals
Although graduation claimed
all five starters from a year ago,
the Crestwood boys basketball
team still has its sights set high
in 2010-11.
“Weʼre actually senior-orient-
ed,ʼʼ said Mark Atherton, the
Cometsʼ veteran head
coach. “We have a lot of seniors
that put their time in (with the)
JVs. We donʼt have a lot of
experience at the varsity level,
but we do have a lot of kids who
have experience with the pro-
gram... and thatʼs kind of the
way we like (it). They know the
system and they know that itʼs
their turn to step up for the pro-
gram.ʼʼ
The Cometsʼ went 19-5 a year
ago, including a district quarter-
final loss to Coughlin which
ended their quest for back-to-
back District 2 titles.
Gone from that group are
Mike Abramcheck, Eric
Jesikiewicz and John Lasko as
well as guard Chris Vega, a
group that combined for most
of Crestwoodʼs 52 points per
game and helped to limit oppo-
nents to just 41 per contest.
“We have a little bit less com-
ing back than we did last year,ʼʼ
Atherton admitted. “Jonathan
Wojnar was our first guy off the
bench, John Fazzini had some
(playing) time, Joey Pickett had
a little time, but realistically (we
have) no starters back. This is a
team that could have a little bit
more offensive firepower than
maybe we had last year,ʼʼ he
added. “We do have kids who
could put the ball in the basket.ʼʼ
Wreckers looking for seniors to show the way
With their “Three Amigos” no
longer in Orange and Black, the
Weatherly boys basketball team
is puting its faith in a large group
of seniors and some talented
underclassmen to carry on what
they started a year ago.
Graduated double figure scor-
ers Keith Barna (18.1 ppg, 24
three-pointers), Nathan Pfeifer
(13.4 ppg, 33 threes) and
Brendan Rowan (11.1 ppg, 54
threes), accounted for nearly 80
percent of the teamʼs points and
all but one of its 111 three-point-
ers last season.
Those three were a big part of
a 14-9 season that didnʼt end
until a playoff loss to Notre
Dame of East Stroudsburg in
the opening round of the District
11 Class A playoffs.
However, seven seniors
return, and four of them were
lettermen and key contributors
to the Wreckersʼ success a year
ago. They will be counted on
heavily to lead the team in
2010-11.
“It all depends on the leader-
ship of our seniors,ʼʼ fourth-year
head coach Ron Cann said. “I
hate to say that, but we have six
or seven of them back and they
have to show what they have
and lead these juniors, sopho-
mores and freshmen and show
them whatʼs supposed to be
done.ʼʼ

ty on the varsity level. The 5-
foot-11 senior averaged 8.3 ppg
and knocked down 34 three-
pointers as a junior last year.
Junior John Fazzini (2.6 ppg),

son, will man the point. Others
who saw spot duty, but who will
play more prominent roles this
year include Pickett and Dave
Piavis, who probably will be the
Cometsʼ tallest starter at 6-2, as
he tries to fill Abramcheckʼs

“Once again, weʼre small, not
terribly small, just small... but
weʼll make do with it,ʼʼ Atherton
said. “I guess weʼve kind of had
our run with big guys.ʼʼ

year ago, will be the focal point
of the offense this season.
“Weʼre trying different things
this year,ʼʼ Cann said. “Hope-
fully, weʼll have more of an
inside game and go back to
what I like to do (and) play more
inside-out instead of outside-in.ʼʼ
The 6-foot-1 Harris is Weath-
erlyʼs unquestioned leader.
“Heʼs the leader of the team,ʼʼ
Cann said. “Weʼre going to rely
on him heavily for his leadership
as well as on offense and espe-
cially for his defense and his
rebounding because we need
rebounders.ʼʼ

on the boards as well as provide
more inside scoring.
“Heʼs our proverbial bull in the

up the court and consistently
make some shots and finish
(breaks).ʼʼ
The district did away with
open tournaments in Class AAA
and AA, instead opting for eight-
team tournaments in both clas-
sifications. A ratings system will
be used to determine which
teams qualify.
“I didnʼt like the (open tourna-
ment) in the beginning, but it
grew on me,ʼʼ Atherton said.
“Now that you have to qualify,
every game is huge.ʼʼ
In addition to home-and-
home conference games with
Hazleton Area, Wyoming Valley
West and Coughlin, the Comets
also have non-league contests
against Delaware Valley,
Williamsport, North Pocono and
Pocono Mountain East.
“We just want to go a little fur-
ther than we did last year,ʼʼ

they did get into some games
last year, but not that many
because our three senior
guards (Barna, Pfeiffer and
Rowan) basically did everything
for us... Now itʼs up to them to
work they way into the lineup
with our younger kids.ʼʼ
Cory Rowan could break into
the starting lineup at point
guard. Ormiston served as the
Wreckersʼ “spark plugʼʼ as their
sixth man last season. Heʼll play
more of a primary starting role.
“Weʼre counting on him to be
our defensive stopper,ʼʼ Cann
said. “We need him to be very
aggressive and rebound from
his guard position.ʼʼ
Weichman stepped up as a
team leader in preseason prac-
tice.
“Heʼs calling out defenses, he
plays very hard and he works
hard,ʼʼ Cann said. “The thing
with him is heʼs only 5-9... and
we basically have him down as
a forward (although) we might
have to play him at the three
(swing) position.ʼʼ
Hollrigl enters his second
year with the program as one of
the teamʼs best outside shoot-
ers according to Cann.
“Jeremyʼs still learning, even
as a senior,ʼʼ Cann said. “Once
he does, he should be OK for
us.ʼʼ
Cann said that Stallone,
Haganey and Charlie Wallish
will learn on the fly as all three
sophomores are expected to
play key reserve roles in their
first varsity seasons.

Barna excels for LCCC hoops team
Keith Barna led the Lehigh Carbon County Community College
menʼs basketball team to a split of a pair of recent games.
The 2010 Weatherly Area High School grad scored 13 points,
dished out five assists and made five steals in the teamʼs 106-92
victory over Bucks County Community College.
In a 95-80 setback to Central Penn College, he had a double-
double with 11 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals.
For the season, Barna is averaging 11 points, four assists and
four steals per game for Lehigh Carbon, which is currently 4-6
under head coach and former Philadelphia 76ers star Daryl
Dawkins.

Three Crestwood football players have been selected to the
Wyoming Valley Conference Big School All-Star first team by the
