[ REED 144 ]
one of the DLSHSI’s ways of responding to the
challenge of holistic education.
also known as the…

“Catholic Social Teaching

of the Church”
It adapts and applies to the
social problems of our times
in order to help, as the church
should, people and gov’t to
organize a more human society
in accordance with God’s plan
for the world.
by definition

it is an embodiment of concepts
[composed of truths, principles and
values] which the living
Magisterium extracts from REVELATION
and NATURAL LAW.
A. Truths
= what one has to believe
and know.
[moral and religious beliefs]
B. Principles
= what one has to do
and put into practice
[code of moral behavior]
C. Values
= what one has to
respect, defend, and cherish.
[fundamental human rights]
1. NATURAL LAW
a light of understanding
placed in us by God.
informs our conscience of
what we should do and act
in accordance with our
rational nature.
it tells us to “do good and
avoid evil”

“NATURAL LAW is the foundation on which

rests the Social Teaching of the Church”
by POPE PIUS XII
2. REVELATION
= to come to a
knowledge of
a personal God.
= from OLD
TESTAMENT to
the NEW
TESTAMENT.
A.OLD TESTAMENT
= contains MORAL LAW
which is an expression of the
natural law.
ex. DECALOGUE – sets out
duties to God, rights and
duties concerning the human
person, the family, and
neighbor.
B. NEW TESTAMENT
= the Gospels contain the
complete teaching on riches
and poverty, the use of the
fruits of the earth and
establishment of a human
community in which all men
partake of the world’s goods
destined by God to be
shared.
HISTORY OF CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING
 Catholic Social Teaching did not develop
simply to respond to social problems. Its
fundamental roots are in God’s revelation of
himself as a Blessed Trinity whose very nature
is communal and social.
 God created man according to his image and
likeness (Genesis 1:26)
 Here, the “likeness of God” is plural as he
creates “Man” as “male and female”.
HISTORY OF CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING

 Therefore, Adam and Eve shared one flesh, just

as Father and Son shared one substance.
 Adam and Eve were one spirit just like Father
and Son shared one spirit.
 Thus, the WHOLE CREATION becomes the
“IMAGE” (reflection) of the manifold life of
Divine Nature of Trinity.
THE essential purpose of Church’s
social teaching is the advancement of
the kingdom of God through human
relations and temporal realities for
the salvation of men. In this way, she
[church] wishes to fulfill the spiritual
mission to unite all men in God and
among themselves.
